The premise of AR on IR was ludicrous. Conjecture to get hits or misinformation to confuse opponents? Delay his return, yes, but IR would be football malpractice.

It will be interesting if he does play.

He is one of the few players/QB's in the league that changes the look of the whole team. He has proved it while being gone.

He impacts the offense, defense and special teams.

If he does come back though, I will say that I'm not going to expect the same Rodgers that we saw before his injury. I think we'll probably see a little rust.

I've been sayin he impact the whole team since he got injured. Franchise QB's not only have the offense built around them but the entire team feeds off them. So the offense, defense and ST are all affected. That's not to say that the D shouldn't be playing better even tho Rodgers isn't playing. THey should and changes need to be made on D. Especially w/ Capers since this is a theme w/ teams he's coordinated. Great when he first arrives and then get progressively worse. Its time to get a new DC.

Fan reaction to #12 coming back combined with another defensive meltdown resulting in a loss to Atlanta will be interesting to watch.

And on that front, even if Rodgers does come back, I think the Falcon game will be close. Why? Because our defense has the uncanny ability to make sub-par QB's look like the second coming of Joe Montana. And Ryan is actually a pretty decent QB, especially when given an ice age to make decisions in the pocket.

With Rodgers: GB 30 - Atlanta 27
Without: Atlanta 33 - GB 7

There is nothing wrong with our defense just ask Dom, Mac and Teddy. Everything is fine, it will fix itself once all the injury prone guys we drafted get better. Oh, I saw Santa yesterday.

There is something wrong w/ the D, its Capers. This is a theme of his D's and teams as HC too. Great when he takes over then goes downhill after a couple years. Get a new 34 DC and the defense will be much better if not very good.

I don't know exactly what happened at other places, but for me the reason why Capers has went downhill is because he has become very conservative as a play caller. He runs the same plays or formations all the time. He is very reluctant to change especially when he is getting beat.

When he first came he used to call various formations and plays. He used to try to do stuff to confuse the offense. He doesn't do that anymore...

That to me is why I would say its time for a different D-Coordinator.

Basically every place Capers has been the DC or HC he takes over what was a poor Defensive team and quickly makes it very good, bordering on Great. Just like in '09 when he started as the Packers DC we went from the mid 20's in overall D to among the best Defensive units in '09. He's able to maintain it for another year, then the wheels start coming off. Just like the past couple years in GB.

IMO he's great at the x and o of Defense. So he's able to get them to play fundamentally sound and be very good. Each year after it starts going downhill and they just aren't able to achieve the same level again. Like I mentioned on another thread I think he doesn't have the leadership to inspire the players to keep playing their best.

His schemes are fine IMO, but his leadership is lacking. That's just how I see it. But the trend is the same. Start out great his first few years then go quickly downhill.

I mean, I know that is Capers mo... But I dont' know the specifics of what happened at the other places.

I just know that in 09-10 we saw a more attacking style of play. He ran aggressive schemes and used packages like the Psycho to create pressure.
We haven't seen any of that the last few years.
Now we are seeing more of a passive, read and react type of defense.

I agree he is a really good X and O's type of D-coordinator, he just needs to be more aggressive, like he used to be.

I think the scheme overall is good. I just would like to see him utilize his players more to their strengths and do more to confuse the offenses.

For example, we all have seen Perry is better at rushing the QB at ROLB. So use him there more. CM3 can go anywhere. Also, why limit CM3 to one side. Move him around so offenses have to try and adjust to where he is at.

My biggest problem though is Capers seems to be very stubborn about his schemes. In the Nickel he uses 2-4 look exclusively. Problem with that, is they have been getting ran all over in the formation. So change it up. Go to a 3-3, or do 3-4 removing a safety for a CB. Not saying all the time, but to change it up so it gives offenses something to think about...

Nagler's tweet about if Rex Ryan gets fired, he'll personally drive him to GB did pique my interest. I know he has baggage, but I'd love to see him whip this defense into shape.

I'm no fan of Ryan by any means. But he would be the antithesis of Capers. I think he would make the D very good again. Honestly would rather a younger DC to inspire the D. I don't think Ryan's personality would fly in GB tho. He would make it all about himself and probably disrupt the chain of command. He's to self-aggrandizing to fit in GB.

Yeah, that's the baggage - I can't really imagine McCarthy tolerating a personality like Rex's.

I mean, Capers has been DC for 4 years now - I don't think I've ever heard him speak.

Yeah, I saw that to Evan.

I don't see McCarthy ever getting Ryan or a guy like Ryan as a D-coordinator.

But I really do think he is a guy that could come in and really improve our defense.

He is a lot more aggressive and he has a very good track record of having great defenses.

I would LOVE to see Ryan as the DC. People think that he's got a me first personality but that's because he gets a picture painted by the NYC media. He was never really like that in Baltimore. He could come in and completely rework the defense and make them great again. There's a lot of talent on the roster waiting to actually be coached.

I'm sure he wants to play, he is an athlete. Its not up to him however. He has to be cleared by the doctors first then the team and that's fathead McCarthy.
Mac should keep him out, let this season go, its pretty much losts anyways. This team needs to win the NFC north now, no wildcards here. Its not like the Lions who are playing on full cylinders are going to let the season go by, so why get him hurt.

The Lions are playing on full cylinders?
The last 4 games.
Lions 21 - Bears 19
Lions 27 - Steelers 37
Lions 21 - Buccaneers 24
Lions 40 - Packers 10

Yeah, they put a beat down on an Aaron Rodger-less team who just came off a game 4 days earlier in which they played 5 quarters...

Oh and the next 4 games for the Lions - At Eagles, Ravens, Giants, At Vikings.
Not necessarily a give me schedule...

I agree RC. No way Lions winning all four. I can see them easily losing two of four. They are not that good.

The Packers can easily win out but Rodgers needs to come back this week. If he doesn't come back this week then I also say sit him the rest of the season and play Tolzein and get him ready to be Rodgers' permananet backup until he retires.

whats sad is that could actually happen...

I'm not saying they will actually win and make the playoffs... I'm just saying it could actually happen.

The year the Packers went to the Super Bowl. No one thought they were going to make the playoffs.
Then they get some much needed help, squeak into the playoffs and win the Super Bowl.
I'm not saying it will happen again, but I'm just saying that the season is not over till its over...

Is there any chance of getting to SB with this defense? Getting bounced out in first round will just be another joke.
Is there any chance the defense miraculously improves with Rodgers' return?

I don't know if anyone here can really judge the coaches but something is clearly more wrong than just with players.
They cut Ross to make an example of somebody without having anyone else to fill the spot. Looks like the training should have gone into Ross rather than some other players that can't seem to improve - with the exception of Crosby and James Jones who's drops a couple years back were also aggravating.

Granted that there have been many injuries. But something is wrong with the 'team' - mentally. To me, that's coaching.

Every time I see McCarthy's face behind his playbook, I shudder. What makes Rodgers great, is not only his passing ability, but his calling audibles that overide the calls from the sidelines. There is absolutely no consistency in the calls from the bench.

His audibles are part of the playcall. If you know the Packers, which apparently you don't, you know each play call has a couple of options run/pass. Theres as many as 6 options on any single playcall built in depending on the defensive formation. One playcall is really just a starting point and its up to Rodgers to decide which variation will work best based on the defensive look.

There is something wrong mentally with the team. Their leader Aaron Rodgers was down. He comes back and suddenly the defense, special teams and even coaches attitudes perk up. Players aren't stupid. They all know the dropoff from Rodgers to Wallace, Tolzein and Flynn was astronomical. Of course attitudes and confidence was at an all time low and they certainly played like it.

Let's go back to that Chicago game. Right before that game Green Bay was probably in my professional opinion playing the best football in the NFL and I had them ranked either no. 1 or no. 2. After? they were one of the worse. You get Rodgers back and alot of our problems go away. Call it magic.
