A Season Full Of Shootouts?

Football Outsiders reason that the Packers could be in for a season full of shootouts. Unfortunatley, they use some faulty logic reaching that conclusion.

That's the summation from Ned Macey over at Football Outsiders:

The Packers have legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, but the team has serious potential for a disaster with its cornerbacks. Any contribution from Harris will be a bonus, and the Packers cannot assume that Woodson will either remain healthy or reach last year's level. Unless Williams and Bush take major strides forward, the Packers will have to win a lot of shootouts.

A couple points.

First of all, any and every team has 'serious potential for disaster' with at least one position on its roster. The days of stockpiling talent everywhere, a la Bill Walsh's San Francisco's 49ers, are long gone.

Secondly, the last sentence is absurd. This team is far from counting on Jarrett Bush taking "major strides" - Now, is it counting on Brandon Underwood and Pat Lee to make "major strides"? Yes. But that is a hell of a lot more likely than Jarrett Bush becoming anything more than the poor excuse for a corner that he is.

Remember, the biggest jump players tend to make is between Year One and Year Two of their NFL careers. Underwood and Lee, who has yet to have anything resembling a full season but who has seen game action and is far from a rookie, are going to be counted on to ensure those shootouts don't happen.

I thought a shootout was how you break a tie in overtime...and we all know that Rodgers will win that every time.

Well, the writer found something to write about during the dry time. He can now go back to his real occupation which is anything but football analyst.

You know, when talking about GB's depth at secondary, the least I expect is for them to know what's the current depth chart...

That was pretty pathetic. I think they just went to NFL.COM and looked at the depth chart from last year when posting that crap...

This is Ted's M.O. That one year we went into the season with NO RBs. Bjack was a rookie, in over his head. So was Wynn, and he ended up on IR with a strained labia. Eventually Grant emerged as The Guy. Pretty much saved the season.
Then the next year it was the defensive line. Now this situation was very much exacerbated by injuries. But TT traded Corey Williams and relied on KGB to come back from his knee injury. Result? 6-10.
Last year, it was the offensive line. Specifically LT, but to a lesser extent, RT and the offensive line generally.
The team is developing, though. CB might be our weakest position (I'd argue OLB is the weakest.) But I think our weakest points are becoming less weak every year.
