CheeseHeadTV Packers 2022 NFL Draft Predictions: The First Pick

Here it is, our annual futile attempt at predicting who the Packers will pick in the first round. This year, with the Packers holding two first-round picks, there are a multitude of possibilities including trades. To keep things simple, our focus here will be the first play Brian Gutekunst picks, regardless of where the pick gets made.  Even more so than usual, this year's prediction is a total crapshoot to those of us not privy to his thoughts. But that won't stop us from trying, will it? So here we go, in no particular order:

Bruce Irons - Chris Olave, WR - Maybe this is too obvious in a situation we should expect the unexpected, but I think Gutey targets his guy and moves up to get him as he has in the past. Olave fills the team's top need and his combination of good footwork off the line and precision route running seems like exactly what the Packers are looking for.

Cory Jennerjohn - Chris Olave, WR - He is the perfect fit for Aaron Rodgers because he strives for perfection with each step of each route. Olave will not look like a rookie at camp because he is the smoothest receiver in this draft and will mesh with Rodgers right away.

Wendell Ferreira - Jordan Davis, DL - Brian Gutekunst hasn't given in to pressure, so he might keep his usual approach and draft the best player on his board. I'd guess the best wide receivers will be gone by 22, so Gutey goes defense again and takes a talented defensive lineman to pair with Kenny Clark.

Dusty Evely - Lewis Cine, S - As much as I want the Packers to grab Chris Olave, Cine seems like the more likely pick. Sporting a lofty 9.90 RAS score and playing for a big name school, Cine has the pedigree, profile and versatility to make for a nice Packers pick. He would immediately slot into the safety rotation and be an upgrade over the Henry Blacks of the world.

Mark Oldacres - George Karlaftis, EDGE - Karlaftis fits the ideal prospect profile for the Packers as a well-rounded pass rusher who is an excellent athlete and only just turned 21. If he's there at pick 22, I think Green Bay sprints the card up.

Gil Martin - Chris Olave, WR - He would provide the Packers with a WR who could contribute more in his rookie season. He's also a reliable route runner, something the team needs to have with Rodgers at QB.

Maggie Loney - Daxton Hill, S  - Safety is a need in this year's draft with the uncertainty of Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage long term. Hill is an elite prospect in this class. He's young (only 21), has an elite 9.03 Relative Athletic Score, and can play the hybrid safety/nickel role in Joe Barry's defense. If nothing else, there's almost zero depth at safety, and that S3 spot is useful in Barry's dime defense. Hill would bring a ton of versatility to the defense and give the Packers added insurance if Amos or Savage got injured.

Joseph Randolph - I don't think Chris Olave nor Drake London will still be there by 22nd Overall, and if I'm Brian Gutekunst that's all I'm holding out for. If he's smart he'll fleece a team trying to jump up and nab a quarterback; then see if he can find good value for 28th Overall as well. I'll take 5+ picks on Day 2 over anybody that might be available late in the 1st Round. The Packers need another Za'Darius Smith-type player who can bookend the line but also rush the passer from a 2-point stance. Hall packaged with Rashan Gary and Preston Smith would give DC Joe Barry crazy flexibility in his 2nd year on the team.

Ken Lass - Devonte Wyatt, DL - A bit undersized for a DL but makes up for it with speed and high motor.  He adds needed depth to Green Bay's defensive front or makes Dean Lowry expendable if they need the cap room.

Jersey Al Bracco - Chris Olave, WR - He's been my pick for a good two months now, and staying with my first instinct is usually my best option. In my opinion, Olave is the one player out of the top 4-5 WRs that could help the Packers significantly THIS year as well as develop into a top receiver down the road. It's very possible a trade-up would be required, and if Olave is Gutey's guy, you know he won't hesitate to use this year's "draft capital" to go get him.

Tim Backes - George Pickens, WR - While I have absolutely no clue, I do think the Packers will take a receiver with one of their first two picks, it's just a matter of which one (and if they keep both of those two picks). With a wild guess, I'm going to go George Pickens. He fits the profile of a player the Packers would like at the position.

Gunnar Davis -  Treylon Burks, WR - I am fully in on the Treylon Burks hype train. The talented wide receiver did it all as sort of a Swiss army knife for the Razorbacks over the past two seasons, which is exactly the type of role I could see Matt LaFleur utilizing Burks in during 2022. Burks will likely be high on the Packers draft board, which is why he's my prediction.

Jordan Davis is a lot of things but one thing he isn't is the quick twitch 3T Jerry Montgomery is looking for.

Are you convinced Clark would be a great 3T? I think he's good there but a guy like Winfrey has the tools to be great and seems to have the drive to get there.

I could be wrong, when it comes to the draft I've definitely been way wrong before, but I think three years from now Travis Jones is a better all around player than Davis. I don't think it matters, don't see Davis getting past the Chargers. When you're run defense is that bad and you can solve it with one player NT in the 1st round doesn't seem that bad.

I think he’d be interesting there. He’s got strength and burst. He’d be a match up nightmare. That said, I’m not claiming my enough expertise to be certain, just speculating on a possible way to improve. I’m not down in Winfrey either, but I do think there maybe more than the most obvious route and this would be perhaps better against the run.

I'm picking Karlaftis, then Nakobi Dean, LB Georgia. #1 rated lb, #14 rated overall prospect. I'm never right about my picks and feel you should appreciate that I am not the Packers G.M.

Montgomery would be scoping out Winfrey, Hall from the high rds to contribute, maybe Alex Wright down the line with a four?

Over-hyped! He also plays well below his potential. Look at his collegiate stats! I would appreciate getting him but don't ever think he will come close to playing like his talent shows he is capable of. Don't think he comes close to playing hard down after down. Thinking Jones in round 2 would be a better option with Packers grabbing an elite Edge, OT, S, or WR in round one....unless Wyatt is available!

I think he is a beneficiary of a stellar D that greatly elevated his results. That is not a criticism...it just makes it difficult to envision if his Bulldog play will translate to the NFL Packers. He's a good player, but Logan Hall and Winfrey got it done without an A+ surrounding class.

Yeah, I have no issues doing as you say. Such a deep draft for the Pack in positions that can offer a starter or two and provide quality depth.

Injuries happen...last year the Pack had way too may snake bites.

These are all really great takes.

Thinking a heavy WR run is so likely that Watson will be gone, and possibly Skyy Moore. That being said, some great players are going to drop to the Packers at 22: DT Devonte Wyatt.

The funny thing is, thankfully, there are a number of less than sharp tools inhabiting the drawers of a good many teams in this NFL.

There’s some really sharp ones too who will exploit their miscues. You see it every year.

I just don't see that kind of value in Moore. I think there is a good chance of him being available at 53. I am feeling a little dull - no sleep today or almost none last night. I am afraid that i am going to fall asleep during the draft.

Ha, yeah. I’ve passed my covid test and am all set to go under the knife tomorrow morning. I have to check in at 5 am, which is right in my wheelhouse. Can’t wait to have this fixed. Watching this draft through recovery ought to help… Nice serendipitous bonus there!

Gotta say, everyone here has made these last couple months a helluva lot easier. Thank you, my friends! Really, really, really enjoyed bashing ideas around with all of you on this. Superfun.

Just hoping for the best for our Packers tonight. Have zero clue what to expect, but trusting we will be much better, with Gutekunst being an ASCENDING talent at GM…!

Thanks, Coldworld and to you all for the kind words. I’m as confident in my surgeon as can be. He’s the best.

I actually feel pretty much the same about Gutekunst. I think he’s going to crush this draft that is loaded at a number of our key need position groups. We’ll see.

I’m super confident we’re all going to be happy with the new talent infusion. If not right away, in time. This Packers personnel staff has been getting better, and better since Gutekunst took over. You can see he’s learned from his miscues here and there. Should be continuing along in this positive trend.

I highly doubt Olave is there at 22. I'm not a fan of trading up at 22 for a receiver. I don't believe those receivers are substantially better than what they can get if they wait.

I have a feeling, if they stand pat, the best player on their board will be on the defensive side of the ball. Wyatt, Hill and Karlaftis come to mind.

I like Cine as well, just a bit higher on Hill. The only thing that gives me pause with that great Georgia defense, and it's a small thing, was it greater than the sum of it's parts. I'd take either. The secondary would be the most elite in the NFL.

Call me crazy but I see Jelani Woods as our 2nd 1st round pick. 6'7" 250 lbs with a RAS of 10, he has a much higher ceiling than any WR likely to be on the board. I don't think he will be available in the late 2nd round at pick 53.

I've been thinking a trade-up is coming for some time and that the target will be an edge. I'm guessing (and that's all it is, of course) a deal up for Jermaine Johnson, edge, FSU, followed by a deal-back from #28 for a 2 and 3.

i think there's going to be a couple players with high draft grades who will slide out of the top 10, and BG will take advantage of a lot of teams wanting to trade back and his newly-found draft capital to take a stab at a blue chipper at a less-than-draft-value-chart price. If that's the case, it's gotta be a DL, Edge, or OT. I'm guessing Johnson's the guy.

I only see a trade up in round 1 would be for Jameson, or if he thought someone like Pickens was easy pickings for a WR starved team like KC.

I do strongly see Gutey either trading #28 to fall back high in round 2 (frankly this makes little sense to me), or much more likely Gutey trading 53, plus additional draft choices to move up around 36-40 in round 2. Go DL, Edge, or OT in round 1. Then move up and grab Pickens, Watson, Pierce, etc early in round 2.

Snot, thats because you have tunnel vision for a receiver. There are many players who are better at more important positions, like edge rusher for example. Good receivers can be had throughout the first 4 or 5 rounds but a rusher as good as Johnson can only be had at the top of the draft. Johnson is a better overall player than any receiver in this class by a wide margain.

I love the idea of Johnson but it might take quite a visit of trade Capitol to get him . He is possibly a top 10 and no farther past then 13 . If we could get it and a trade up it would be Gary 2.0 . Good Edges always need priority over most positions . Trading down if that happens later might yield a Pierce and a good safety Hall, Cine or Brisker . I think Pickens intrigues Gutey or even Burks if he falls . There may be some pressure to draft a WR high if only to please Rodgers. I wouldn't rule out a trade for Waller with if we are lucky a 3 round pick which may be too much of a steal. Packers have been a draft and develop team generally but after the Rams success at all in they may need to reconsider . I would love a McLaurin or a Waller with some draft picks involved . We will only choose about 8 or 9 picks and we can opt for a trade somewhere for either a higher draft pick or a vet. We also might like to add a few picks for next year where we are a little short . The draft will upgrade our team and will keep us first in our division and possibly the number 1 seed . What will take us over the top? M y feeling is an improved defense and ST with 2 adds one to the OL and a couple of ball catchers . A TE and 2 WR some of whom may be vets . I am glad this endless draft talk will soon be over . Some certainties no punter , kicker or long snapper will be drafted . We will look to find a WR like a V . Jones for punt and and kickoff returns and some who can gun perhaps . The Packers will look hard at NDFAs for STs as well. GPG

If Olave or another suitable WR prospect isn't there, either one of the two safeties mentioned might be on Gute's radar for depth now and flexibility later; it's always smart to plan ahead.

I don't think Gute breaks with tradition and selects a DL this early. Edge, though, is certainly a possibility.

Before I hnd in my selection, here's what I think...
Run stoppers on Dline can be gotten in every round.
Same can be said for WRs unless they are real playmakers. Not sure there are any in this draft. Good ones-yes, not difference makers.
ILB hasn't been a priority for the Pack sinceeeee forever. So no ILB in first round.
No QB in first round.
No TE or H-Back in 1st round.
Lastly no RB in the first round.
OK, what's left? Oline, Dline pass rusher, Edge pass rusher who can also stop the run, slot DB/SS.
OT (since that's the Packers MO draft OTs make them OG if they can't cut it as OTs); At Packer's selection you may have- Cross, Penning, Smith. Realisticly unless an earthquake happens the choices are Penning or Smith.
Dline pass rusher- Logan Hall or Winfrey Both should be available.
EDGE: Jermaine Johnson, David Ojabo, George Karlaftis, Boye Mafe. JJ is probably not available but lets leave him anyway.
DBs: Stingley (the earthquake thing again), Kyle Hamilton (Earthquake), Trent McDuffie, Lewis Cine, Draxton Hill, Kaiir Elam, Andrew Booth
Let's put them as the highest ranked:
Cross, Stingley, Hamilton, and JJ in that order.
These will be probable available as player ranking:
Ojabo, Penning, Karloftis, McDuffie, Cine, Hill, Elam, Mafe, Smith, Booth, Hall, and Winfrey.
So when Green Bay goes to the podium if none of the Cross, Stingley, Hamilton, or JJ are available then they drop down to the next group.
First guy up Ojabo. I have a hard time picking this guy because of his injury. Maybe 2nd round but not first. Next guy up is Penning. They need OTs and he is super strong, mean, and great size.
So Green Bay selects OT Penning as their first pick.
Second pick is either Cine or Hill. Whoever TB doesn't pick.
There you go, it's BPA taking into account their needs.

Great analysis based on past drafts . My sense is there little reason to pick a high OL as for many reasons Jenkins will be shifted to tackle because of signing issues next year . I think Edge and Safety / slash Db will be the main priority . The 64 thousand dollar question will be if they decide to go after a trade like Waller or MCLaurin etc. which may affect their draft position. I think they go edge to replace Smith and a safety because Amos and Savage contracts are at issue next year . A good WR and OL can be gotten later. I like Lucas the kid from a pass heavy WSU and a Pierce or Pickens ad nauseam with the receivers. Frankly , Rodgers likes older receivers and does well diversifying his reception choices . It has always amazed me that he does well even if an Adam's is not in the line up . Just vet someone with sure hands and basic route running skills . We already have them on the team. We would like a speedster ( Mc Laurin anyone ? ) and an X type receiver or a truly good TE ( Waller anyone ?). One vet WR and perhaps 2 d either drafted or draft and NDFA . One reciever like V Jones to return punts and kicks and Alex Pierce or a Pickens who could fall for being an asshole in interviews .

Thinking there’s a high potential for 1-0 QBs taken R1, creating a huge wave of the top WRs to be taken prior to our 22…

Totally agree with dobber, except that we likely make our best pick at 22, and trade out of 28 to another team who wants a crack at the Top remaining QBs.

If no trade out happens in this scenario, it could look something like this:

**********
22 DT Devonte Wyatt
28 S Lewis Cine
53 WR Velus Jones
59 WR Tyquan Thornton
93 CB Zyon McCollum
132 OT Obinna Eze
140 EDGE Alex Wright
171 EDGE DeAngelo Malone
228 TE Charlie Kolar
249 OT Cordell Volson
258 NT Noah Elliss

Come on. Gute trades back three times reaching the second round then up twice in the next two in order to mess with us and avoid the commercial break traditionally reserved for us.

Hahaha. Yes. I’ve been thinking he may trade out of R1 entirely… THAT would yield a bonanza of picks right in the heart of this sucker.

Hell, I could see him trade both 22 & 28, then jump back in, get his guy, and still come out way ahead.

I used to absolutely love Wyatt in the 1st round but it recently came out that he had multiple domestic violence incidents with his own family members. Hes likely off the Packers board entirely.

If Gutey is on the clock and Jordan Davis is on the board and Gutey doesn't take him, he definitely knows something I don't.

I think Jordan Davis > Raji for sure, and I think Clark could easily take Ryan Pickett's role in our 2010 defense. I think with coaching and maturity Jordan Davis might be more impactful than we could imagine, but that's just me.

Big 🐦 😀

I've mixed emotions about Jordan. Too talented and big for minimal production. Motivation and a non-stop motor can only come from within. No coach can change that! I'm leary of Jordan for that reason. Give me someone with that internal die hard non-stop motor with talent.

NFL weight room and Dietary help will shape him like we need him.

While that would be a surprise, I actually don't hate it. Aaron Jones won't play forever, and you could actually utilize Hall in the Ervin role, which could greatly impact our offense. You could split him out at a WR too. Hall is tougher and better with the ball in his hands than Olave, and more versatile. You could use Hall in a Deebo Samuel role easily.

Cine - I don't hate that pick either. We need a 3rd Safety, and he'd be able to contribute to our defense day one in several roles.

I know you were going for a laugh, but thinking about it doesn't make me want to puke, so I'm good! ; )

I'm sorry PB - But I actually think it's a great idea. Breece Hall is almost a carbon copy of Deebo Samuel, except he played RB in college. Hell, Breece is faster. Breece Hall is an exceptional catcher of the football, so instead of wasting draft capital trading for Deebo, just draft Hall and convert him to the Deebo role. Can't believe we all didn't think of it before...

Seriously.

He’s not nearly as good as a receiver though. A running back who can catch as opposed to a WR who proved to be a really effective runner out of the backfield. That’s quite a leap to ask of any player at the price of a first round pick.

You mean like asking a WR to play RB?

Just wait and see how Buffalo employs Breece Hall if they do draft him.

Sorry Cw, I have to disagree with you. Hope Gutey does it, just so we can find out.

*Side note: Deebo doesn't want to be a RB. He wants to be a WR. (Insert guy pointing at his head meme...)

Draft a RB to play WR and you have the best of both worlds. A WR might not want to be a RB, but a RB, sure won't mind taking snaps as a WR...

Breece Hall might be the perfect fit for RB/WR for the Packers. IDK why it took Pantz Burp to get me thinking about it either! Thanks Bro - Great idea though.

Kill two birds with one 1st round pick. Hall can catch the ball and run the ball. (Olave can't!)

I am hoping MaLF thought of this months ago and just kept it quiet. The more I think about it, the more it seems like a natural fit.

Breece Hall 5' 11" 217lbs 31 1/4" arms 9 3/4" hands 4.39 40 40" vert 126 Broad

Deebo Samuel 5' 11" 214lbs 31 3/8" arms 10" hands 4.48 40 39" vert 122 Broad

I know for a fact I would want Breece Hall over Chris Olave... Just saying.

Drafting a RB to play WR isn't a stretch, and the dude can do both...

I have no problem if the Pack loads up the RB room as long as MLF uses them in both the run and pass. And demands his QB understands his strategy.

And when Rodgers retires after 2022 (50% odds), it makes the transition to Love easier.

I figure we'll all know tonight about 8:15 CST. Hopefully, they go BPA. And if they don't draft a WR until Round Two, fine. That is where they found Jennings, Nelson and Adams. The only thing being, if the pick doesn't set the league on fire in Year One, don't haul out the pitchforks and torches too quickly. It usually takes a WR at least a year or two to develop. Which is not optimal, but what can reasonably be expected.

Moving up in round 2 is certainly a good possibility, even more so now we have seen how round one panned out. A 3rd or 4th or both to move up can significantly alter who will be available. The upper part of round two holds many of my favourite prospects in this draft - it is where the best value lies (imo).

Give me a Jameson or Pickens but not fretting if neither one. Some of my sleeper WR's after Pickens, Watson, and Pierce who are very talented and will be available from late 2nd round into 6th round.

*Kahlil who is extremely talented and could play similar role as Deebo, plus ST's Returner. Love this guy! Mark my words he will make some noise!
*Kyle Philips - repeat of Kahlil! Love this guy! Hopeful in 3rd round.
*Calvin Austin - somehow Gutey has to draft this guy! Just dynamic!
*Josh Johnson - available late but a sleeper! Shifty!
*Velus Jones - has it all with speed!
*Danny Gray - I liken his game to Chris Olave more than any other in the draft. Fast & smooth but available in round 5. Crazy!

Focus Gutey on the big guys early. Lots of WRs later!
