5 Things To Watch in Packers Preseason Finale

Here are five things to watch for during tonight's preseasom finale:

  1. Your beer. Is it cold? If not, go get a cold one. I promise you won't miss anything.
  2. Speaking of beer, do you have enough? You're going to need a lot to get through a fourth preseason game.
  3. Look for shots of Aaron Rodgers on the sideline and how the Internet completely overreacts to every single one.
  4. #TBLS
  5. No injuries. Please.

One week until it counts.

Go Pack Go.

One thing to watch during tonight’s game: anything else besides the game.

Get injury report following the game as that is all that matters. Hopefully the report is blank.

Move on to actual NFL games that count.
Thanks, Since ‘61

Probably right. I hope I don’t watch a single starter in uniform who is not a kicker or LS. I hope I mostly see players that are not on roster predictions with any regularity. I couldn’t care less about the score.

Here is who I will be watching (no particular order) to seize last spots and stake a PS claim.

Nijman. LT
Sheldon ILB
Sullivan CB
Crawford ILB
Redmond FS
Markus Jones OLB
Ramsey OLB
T Matthews SS
Ford RB
Lazard WR
Redding WR/ Returner (for PS purposes)
Wilkins QB (for PS purposes)

Oh come on '61. Don't you want to watch and see the inevitable bizzare moment that always seems to strike us, or some never ever seen before freak play? If nothing else we always could be entertaining in some way. Enjoy everyone, and of course no injuries please!

Tundra - definitely agree on No Injuries. As for the game, the weather here in the Northeast is too nice to stay inside for preseason football. Going out with the wife for a nice dinner down the shore and a good start to the holiday weekend. Be well. Thanks, Since '61

Some nice LBs for Utah and BYU going at it tonight. The DTs for BYU are solid. The Jackrabbits blew the upset bid against the the Gophers.
The Bearcats have some intriguing Defensive backs. Good start the the 2020 draft scouting report.

Two things that I'll be watching:

1. The play of Boyle & Kizer. This game may very well determine the backup QB situation for the season. If one or both of them perform well the Packers will probably stick with them for the year. But if they both bomb out the Packers may very well be looking for a replacement.

2. The play of Taylor and Jenkins. The Packers absolutely have to improve the play of the OL this season over what they did last season. Protecting Rodgers and having an effective running game depends on the OL. They've already upgraded RG and it remains to be seen what they plan for LG.

I think the LaF and BG already know what they want to do with that LG spot. I agree: I don't think they gain anything by playing either of these guys.

Not only is it football but Packers football -- and that only happens 20 times a year, not including playoffs. So to me this game is a big deal.
***
Relevant to my controversial list of wide receivers the Packers may want to keep from a recent article, I'll be watching any members of that corps who may be playing.
I truly appreciate TheGreatReynoldo's take on Allen Lazard not being good at route running (apparently meaning he isn't shifty, and perhaps not very precise).
Although I've been enthusiastic about Lazard, there's a lot I don't know about him. I'm open to changing my admittedly limited impression.
The kinds of things that could be discussed in the future here at CHTV include (1) whether Lazard has the potential to improve on his route running; (2) how his route running compares to other tall receivers; (3) whether his other skills would still make him valuable to the Packers, especially in the context of the new offense; and (4) as a matter of comparison, the plusses and minuses of our other receivers.
The point of my previous comment was that we may want to keep some less polished receivers this season if they are appreciably more talented for a better team in 2020 and beyond.
The point here is I'm glad for the other points of view here at CHTV, and for an opportunity in preseason games to get at least a glimpse of these guys on my own.

A year ago we were discussing what to do with Kumerow. Remember, the guys fighting for roster spots today could be catching playoff touchdowns in 4 months. I can't remember a year where we didn't lose at least 1 WR for an extended period of time.

I've been saying they will keep 8 WRs with only 4 RBs (including FB) and cutting Marcades and Tramon. Lazard plays slot, and uses his size to give a nice target and could probably be a more or less back up TE with Lewis gone (a WR in that TE route spot is a huge mismatch against his skills).

Of course, EQ goes on IR and they really only run with 7 to open the season and fill one of those surprise cuts off the wire. I think there will be another surprise cut but I forgot the one I projected!

I (no lie) have enjoyed every single preseason game so far and will enjoy tonight's game as well. I don't care if the product is sloppy, I thoroughly enjoy getting to see fringe roster players make a case for a roster spot. I like seeing which rookies and UDFA's step up so I know the storylines to watch for when the regular season begins.

I totally agree. These young men are trying their best to fulfill their lifelong dream of playing in the NFL. Some are obviously not up to the task but there are many that are just looking for an opportunity to show what they can do. Most of us never get to see the preseason practices so these games are our only chance to evaluate the players ourselves. It's the drama of the cutdown date that I find compelling.

I'm also a fan of ANY Packers game. I was a fan through the 1970s, and watched every painful moment--that was far harder than watching pre-season games. Heck, I like watching ANY football. I like watching college games, high school games, even 7 kids playing a game in the back yard. It's always entertaining to me. That's not "low standards," that's getting the most out of what you enjoy! :)

Always good to find Packer fans who endured the seemingly endless sufferings of the 1970s and 1980s.
Quarterback Fran Tarkenton twirling around in the backfield tormenting Packer rushers with his elusiveness has me still to this day with a special hostility toward the Vikings.
Later on, the Randy Moss games during his rookie season of 1998 solidified this loathing.
I detest the Vikings due to the 1970s -- and the Cowboys. The only America's Team is the Green Bay Packers.
P.S. For me, it's hard to watch any NFL game that doesn't involve the Packers. Otherwise, I'd probably prefer watching kids playing in the backyard, except I'd really want to play even at age 57.

Could it be they've decided on Boyle already and by withholding judgement, are just trying to grow Kizer's market value? The backup quarterback market has been described as a vast wasteland.

Mark, that is a great take. You are absolutely correct, and it would be cool if Gutekunst could work a trade of Kizer as opposed to just releasing him.

Not going to hold my breath on that, but, certainly possible.

We actually have a number of players who teams might want to trade for in this span before roster cuts.

Is there any merit to making season ticket holders pay for these? Recent trends indicate that the overall interest in NFL regular season games has waned during the last several years. I'm a season ticket holder from California and fly back to one or two games, but I will admit that my interest has diminished from the enthusiasm level of 5 years ago.

The 4th preseason game can get really hard to watch after a while. But that being said I am looking forward to it.

I'm watching...

1. The QB race. Who stands out, who takes a step back.

2. The WR's. I think Moore has a very, very slim chance of making it, but if he goes out and has 100 receiving yards and looks great, do they keep him? Does Lazard or Shepherd make the plays needed to make the 53?

3. RB's. I think they will have a hard time cutting Williams but between him and Carson Williams has the higher ceiling plus he was a draft pick. Can he earn the spot?

4. DB's. They are nearly set with their DB's. But does someone like Sullivan force his way onto the 53? Do Jamerson or Redmond do something to make the 53? Perhaps on special teams these guys make plays to make the roster just as Crawford did last year.

5. Standouts. Does anyone stand out in their last opportunity to show anything tonight to earn a spot on the 53? Every year someone really stands out to make the 53. Who is that guy tonight.

Tim Boyle has been playing QB with a lot of poise so far and looks like he’ll only get better. He has five TD passes and engineered 6 TD drives in 5 quarters of play. Not having to settle for FGs.

His QB play has been exciting to watch in these pre-season games and if he has to play in regular season games I believe he would prove to be a capable backup. He just needs the opportunity to play as Rodgers did waiting behind Favre.

This will be the first pre season where I didn’t see the Packers hardly play any starters through all 4 games. I had seen New England not play starters a few pre seasons and I thought...how smart. Didn’t seem like there was any rust to knock off. But, as always the proof will be in the results. I also don’t remember a 1st year coach going to the big dance either. At minimum, it will be an interesting season
