5 Things to Watch in Packers at Rams: Who Benefits From Doubs’ Absence?

Dontayvion Wicks could be set up for a break out game versus a porous Rams defense.

The Packers head west to face the Rams this week, in what will be their first ever game at So-Fi Stadium in Los Angeles. Matt LaFleur is 4-0 against his former colleague Sean McVay, with all four of their previous matchups being played at Lambeau Field.

Here are five things to watch as Green Bay looks to get back over .500.

Who benefits from Doubs' absence?

Drama swirled around the Packers on Friday evening as the absence of Romeo Doubs, which was previously referred to as a ‘personal’ matter, was seemingly revealed to be related to the receiver being unhappy with his role.

While there could be more at play, if Bill Huber’s report at Sports Illustrated is true, Doubs’ frustration does not make much sense, at least based on his usage since the beginning of last season.

Doubs led the team in targets in 2023, and is only two behind the joint-leaders – Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks – through the first four weeks of this campaign.

If he is displeased about his targets to begin this season, that would feel slightly unfair given the Packers have had to work around a backup quarterback in half of their games.

Perhaps it was this upcoming week’s game plan which left Doubs unhappy and led to him skipping Thursday and Friday’s practices. Perhaps he sees the rise of Wicks coming and knows his time as a full-time player is running out.

There is a good chance this issue gets worked out, but if not, it could be a blessing in disguise for the Packers, providing they can recoup draft capital by trading Doubs elsewhere.

Doubs is a good NFL wide receiver, but he is not special in any way, and Green Bay’s other receivers all have something to offer that he does not.

Christian Watson is more explosive, as is Reed, who also serves as a much more natural slot option. Wicks is the best route runner on the team and sooner or later, will be the better ‘X’ receiver.

Prior to his revelation, there was no reason to toss Doubs aside and reduce his role in the offense, as he has been very reliable in his time with the Packers, but if he wants out, trading the former fourth-round pick could be beneficial.

If Doubs could fetch, let’s say, a third round pick, and at the same time open the door for Wicks to take on a bigger role, while still holding strong depth at receiver, it would be a good deal for Green Bay.

Turning the focus to this game, the Packers are likely to be without not only Doubs, but also Watson for the trip to California, and it will be interesting to see how the targets are shared.

Reed has established himself as an uber-productive target on a weekly basis, and while Wicks had struggles with drops last week, he also ended the day with 78 yards and two touchdowns.

Bo Melton could serve an important role in replicating the deep threat provided by Watson, whether that be catching deep passes or clearing out space for his teammates underneath.

L.A. 's top corner Darious Williams is set to return from a hamstring injury, but outside of him, none of the Rams corners are likely to hang with Reed or Wicks one on one, and their safeties have not provided much help either.

There are plenty of yards out there for Green Bay’s receivers this week, the only question is, who will be the biggest beneficiary?

Josh Jacobs

The Rams defense has not been any better at stopping the run than the pass, allowing the second-most rushing yards in the league and joint-fourth-most yards per carry at five.

With the Packers offense in an early hole last week against the Vikings, the game script meant Jacobs’ role was diminished, but he remained efficient, picking up 51 yards on nine carries at 5.7 yards per tote.

Jacobs remains without a touchdown after four games in green and gold, but should have a real chance to put up numbers this Sunday. Do not be surprised to see Jacobs in the end zone multiple times this week.

Tutu Atwell

After being hit by arguably the worst injury luck of any team so far this season, the Rams are ravaged on offense, missing their top two receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua, as well as starting offensive linemen Steve Avila, Jonah Jackson and Joe Noteboom.

Running back Kyren Williams is a stud, and the Rams will try to rely on their ground game to stay in the game and grind the clock, but when they do go to the air, Atwell is the player to watch.

Compared to workmanlike receivers Demarcus Robinson and Jordan Whittington, Atwell is the only Los Angeles pass catcher who has true juice and electricity to his game.

Expect McVay to scheme up the diminutive but speedy wideout in an attempt to create some big plays.

Is the rust gone for Jordan Love?

Love has really had no chance to settle into the season, opening the campaign in Brazil in a less than normal situation on a less than ideal playing surface, before suffering the MCL injury which kept him out of Green Bay’s next two games.

Green Bay’s QB took a while to get back into a rhythm and find consistent accuracy throwing the football, but by the end of proceedings, was slinging it as well as Packers fans remember he can.

LaFleur said this week he never wants his quarterback to throw the ball 54 times in a game, but it did give Love plenty of reps to shake the rust off. After getting back on the field and back into a groove, will Love be all systems go this week as he returns to his home state?

Packers penalty count

This week’s game feels like one the Packers can only lose by beating themselves. Based on the two losses suffered so far this season, that is something Green Bay is well capable of doing.

They spent essentially the entire first half of the Vikings game shooting themselves in the foot, and in the early season, the Packers have had an unfortunate habit of committing offensive penalties in the red zone.

LaFleur has talked plenty about executing better technique and cutting down the amount of penalties his team is committing, but it is time for that talk to be put into action.

The most important thing to watch as always is the play of the quarterback.
Don’t let anyone tell you that Packer fans are stuck with Jordan Love as quarterback.
The Eagles drafted Carson Wentz 2nd overall behind Goff in 2016 and then made the mistake of exercising their 5th year option on Wentz in April 2019 and 6 week later gave him an extended contract through 2024-25. When Roseman and Lurie soon realized - March 2021 - they had made a mistake they traded him. Took them less than 2 years. The Packers should not wait that long.
Only reason Jordan will remain is because trading him will confirm Gutekunst’s incompetence & destruction of a perennial Super Bowl contender.
Forget about the defensive coordinator and kicker – those are scape goats.
QB accuracy, QB decision making, QB situational awareness, and QB fundamentals are what to focus on – Jordan unfortunately excels at none of these.
Jordan is 10 wins and 12 losses as a starter – despite a full stable of offensive weapons – 13-3, 13-3, 13-4 – purge begins – 8-9, 9-8, and ?.
Jordan is currently completing 55.7% of his passes – 30th in the NFL at a time when Daniels is at 82.1, Smith 72.3, Carr 72, Goff 71, Burrow 70.9, Minshew 70.7, Fields 70.6, Mayfield 70.5 Jordan finished last year at 26th in completion % and 19th in interception % - and that is after Lafleur scaled back the game plan for Jordan and Aaron Jones returned and took some pressure off.
“Rust” was the propaganda key word put out this week for the football high priests to preach to the flock as the excuse. Nonsense.
Against the lowly Rams – 31st in defense – even a QB on the border of starter/backup status will excel. So not much of a test – still watch.
Jordan is certainly not a “Franchise QB”. Don’t believe the planted propagandists – and you will always find a couple on any discussion board, sports, political, business, etc. etc.

I also want to see our pass d stop someone. McKinny is our pass d right now.

Who benefits from Doubs' absence? Well, that's the real question, isn't it? Who? The 'How' and the 'Why' is just scenery for the public. Gute, Murphy, Ball, the League Office, keeps 'em guessing like some kind of parlor game. Prevents 'em from asking the most important question: Who? Who benefited? Who has the power to cover it up? Who?...

Everything is cellularized. No one has said, 'He must be suspended.' There's been no vote. Nothing's on paper. There's no one to blame. It's as old as the crucifixion. A military firing squad: five bullets, one blank. No one's guilty, because everyone in the power structure who knows anything has a plausible deniability. There are no compromising connections except at the most secret point. But what's paramount is that it must succeed. No matter how many are injured, no matter how much it costs, the perpetrators must be on the winning side and never subject to prosecution for anything by anyone. That is a coup d'état.

They've been doing it all through history. It's power, nothing more! Oh, don't take my word for it, do your own thinkin' and hope to reach a point of critical mass that'll start a chain reaction of people coming forward. Then the NFL'll crack. Remember, fundamentally, people are suckers for the truth, and the truth is on our side, I just hope we get a break.

You're the closest, bud. Just a nod to Donald Sutherland's character in the movie JFK. Helluva convo with Costner. I'm afraid it went over several heads. I'm not for everyone.

Wicks was set up without Doubs, since he’s the logical starting X in Watson’s stead. Melton is likely the biggest winner in terms of snaps, although Heath will pick up some. I doubt they want to give too many more to Reed. Wicks needs to catch or Heath will get more opportunities there as well. You might see Heath as a big slot and less 12 personnel too with Musgrave out.

I was thinking Heath might fit that role and maybe Jacobs getting some situational receiving out of the backfield or some variation.

Jayden Reed is our main dog, Watson is out for now, and Doubs is out for a game. That means tomorrow it is time for Wicks and Melton to show some of that talented depth we were all happy about this summer. Are you OK with Reed, Melton, and Wicks lining up together about 40 times? I hope so, because that's what we've got.

Reed is a blue chip, and I've seen Melton and Wicks flash, but we need more than some flashes now. We need guys who can line up 40 or more times and get open and catch a few balls each. Reed should get the most targets/touches so Melton and Wicks need to make the most of some limited targets.

I don't see us throwing 40 passes. 30, maybe.

Id like Kraft to make it to season end you slave driver. He’s already the highest snap count for a skill position. My ideal would be for Beck to take some of the obvious blocking off him just to manage his snaps a little, but that probably doesn’t happen. I admit the idea of a fullback run blocking excites after so many years without a real one. Maybe Sims takes a few do he can do more offensively without a ridiculous load.

the main reason Kraft is getting so many snaps is that Musgrave can't block a lick

I think Reed is going to see a lot of double coverage, so Wicks and Melton should have some real opportunities for big plays. Kraft as well.

I'm really puzzled about what might have set Doubs off. He's gotten as many passes thrown his way as anyone else. Maybe it's the types of routes he's asked to run, or he thinks he's being asked to block more than he likes. I don't know.

Seems like his solution should have been to talk to his coaches, and then 'just get open'. If he's open and not getting any passes, just keep getting open. Sooner or later they'll pass you the ball.

Just going awol is counter productive. If he makes about a million $ a year, losing a week's pay will cost him about $60 grand.

Pulling this stunt may cost him a lot more if he ever goes the free agent route. It might make a lot of teams wary if he's going to try this on them at some point.

"Who Benefits From Doubs’ Absence?"

I hope Doubs does. I like him...he is a team player. In all of his interviews, he thinks before he talks. I like that and him. Hoping they can start fresh and on the same page. If he is dealing with personal issues, I sure hope he can work through them.

We are Packer family and will get through this together.

Packers have some injuries along the O line, not sure whats going on with Musgrave or if they’re not satisfied with his blocking. I will say he came into camp looking even leaner. Not sure how i feel about that as the entire off season he probably should have been putting on weight and muscle… but who knows…maybe they had a different plan for him. I couldnt tell the difference between him playing and when Ben sims was in the spot. At least Gutty double dipped in the draft and we got Kraft.

In my mind Reed, Heath and Melton have had good hands from the jump and its been almost criminal not to use them. Many of games have been won with their contributions. The Doubs situation will work out. I dont fault him as he has the best hands of the bunch. Im sorry but im not as huge on Wicks and Watson as some in here. There is no way we need to see 3 yrs for a #1 pick “ develope” or get healthy ( Watson). This year he has to produce and stay healthy otherwise the patience with him should run its course.
This might be a “ get it right “ game for LaFluer game plan wise and Love to get his legs under him a bit more. They brought up a fullback to help shore up the O line /TE run fits and I guess we’ll see how it works out. Ill be watching to see if they run more or cut Love lose more. Also to see how much Melton, and Heath contribute.
