2014 NFL Draft: Day One Recap, Day Two Primer

Day one is in the books!

We saw some fascinating moves again this year, and things look like they will be just as fun this evening.

A few thoughts on Day One:

-I'm not sure I like the Browns' selection of Justin Gilbert but with Joe Haden, the secondary should be very solid. Johnny Manziel is saying all the right things and it sounds like he is dedicated to suceeding in Cleveland.

As they say on Game of Thrones though, words are wind. But I'm on board.

-I have Kelvin Benjamin higher than most but I can't fathom why Carolina took him over Marqise Lee. Poor Cam Newton.

-I'm not a fan of the idea of Detroit taking Eric Ebron, as I think the secondary is a huge flaw. That said, he's essentially another wide receiver, so as they missed out on Sammy Watkins (who they were actively trying to move up for, along with Justin Gilbert who slipped out of their grasp), he makes sense.

-I love the Jets pick of Calvin Pryor. I was more of a Clinton-Dix guy but both are hard-hitting enforcers who will enforce across the middle. Both the Packers and Jets got a lot better in the secondary on day one.

-I firmly believe, by the way, that the Jets and GM John Idzik are shooting to make the team in Seattle's image. Solid run game, mobile QB, decent receivers, smothering front seven, hard hitting secondary. It's not there yet but it will be.

-Think Christian Ponder's inability under pressure was on GM Rick Spielman's mind Thursday? This stat from ESPN's Cecil Lammey says it was.

I don't love Barr with that first pick but Mike Zimmer will make it work. And as we know I am in love with Teddy Bridgewater.

-I don't know what Miami is doing. I am a proponant of grabbing the guy you want but how do you take JuWuan James over Morgan Moses or guard Joel Bitonio. They remind me of the drunk guy at your fantasy draft who passes out, wakes up for his pick, panics, and grabs the first guy he sees on his year-old draft guide.

So no I don't like it.

-I can confirm that the Houston Texans were not interested in two of the three Qbs taken yesterday and their top QB is on the board still.

It sounds like Jimmy Quick Hands Garoppolo is their guy, which explains their interest in moving back again. I have been told that they are fine trading back because they can be sure the teams right behind them won't take a QB.

Bortles sounds like their top quarterback but we'll never know. I love Clowney in that defense and if they grab the right quarterback, the will bounce back from an awful 2013.

What can we expect tonight?

Well, I expect multiple quarterbacks to go tonight, many of which could be in round two. You can also bet tackles and wide receivers will fly off the board in abundance.

I think Carolina will make another bad decision tonight. How the mighty have fallen.

Who is left who should go?
