Andy, right about Jordan Morgan pick, wrong about Cooper DeJean. "In the event of our guy taken" is the right take. That's what happened. As soon as Eagles traded up, Packers traded down. They knew. The only other team that was tied to DeJean on par with the Packers pre-draft was the Eagles. The Eagles knew this as well. It's not a coincidence they trade right before the Packers. You say it was Bullard that checked all boxes for that versatile DB, yes, but so did DeJean in a bigger way. Everyone knows this. He was Safety/DB No.1 . They also knew Edgerrin Cooper was going to be there at #58. No LB was taken in between or even in the 2nd round. Not until the 5th pick of the 3rd round. Don't get me wrong, I like both picks. I had Edgerrin Cooper, LB No.1, on the short list from the start. And Bullard was Safety No.2, for me. But if Eagles don't trade up, we'd be having a different conversation right now how the Packers were given a gift with DeJean falling. The Packers will never admit it.

In a post draft interview Gute was asked about the trade back and Dejean and he responded that the deal to trade back was completed before it was announced that the Eagles moved ahead of the Packers to take Dejean. He said the Packers "had a very strong board at the time" and thought trading back would not hurt them at all.

Take anything GMs say at draft time with a grain of salt, but he really had little reason to mislead after the fact. The Packers just may not have been as high on Dejean as the fans were.

Gute is a shrewd GM. He knows his board, but also what is possible. I believe the trade was in place "In the event of our guy taken", not completed. Fans and DIC made the mistake of thinking DeJean was a CB only. He's a Safety. Safeties usually don't go round 1. Packers are never going to admit any draft or any player they took wasn't what they wanted over another or anticipated. They got LB No.1 and Safety No.2, so not complaining, just will never believe they wouldn't have taken DeJean.

If they had grit, Q. Mitchell was within reach @ #22. Morgan was their top guy to cover Love's blindside. No one expected Mitchell to be out of the top 15. The QB/OT run drove him down river. Gutey chose to protect the Franchise and not seek Projects at OT.

I agree that missing on DeJean hurt. But that's how the draft rolls sometime. I detest the philosophy to "move up to get the guy". I'm firmly in the camp of quantity over quality in the draft, just because "quality" is so elusive to hit. Give me more tickets in the draft lottery every time.

I would have loved the scenario of adding both Coopers in rnd 2. It didn't work out. They got one of the Coopers and upgraded Safety by a longshot over the status quo before the draft. And gave themselves 2 more lottery tickets in the process. That's great drafting, IMO.

Bullard has played slot, SS and FS. He’s the consensus best interchangeable S in the draft. DeJean is a slot corner who hasn’t played safety at all. To say that DeJean was the best S in the draft is ridiculous.

I wouldn't go so far as "ridiculous" but nothing is certain in the draft. I think DeJean was worth serious consideration but went one pick before they could. Cie la vie. They are still one heck of the lot better today than yesterday.

Lifelong Hawkeye. You have to understand the Hawkeyes. They don't get high end skill recruits. They don't get the better QB's, WR's, CB's. They are a TE, OL, DL factory, with the occasional LB, RB. They have to make guys who would probably be a safety on better teams a CB because of need. DeJean was recruited as a Safety. They moved him to CB early because he could. He's an outstandingly versatile DB. And yes, I believe the best S in the class. Watch how the Eagles play him.

"The guy has every tool in his body," said Eagles Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman in a press conference on Friday night. "He's an elite athlete and elite competitor. He has done everything on the football field. He's just got football instincts. He's the type of guy that wherever you put him, he's going to play really well. He's got great character, just excited to have him."

"I'm a football player," DeJean said. "So, you put me on the field, I'm going to go play football. Whether it's inside, outside, at safety, or whatever it is, this is a game I love to play. As long as I am on the field, out there, I'll be happy, and I'm going to give it my all every time I'm on the field."

Bullard had a 33"-0 vertical. He will have to play the ball, not the WR when he goes against the tall timber.

Gute worked his magic again! Yes, I admit I second guessed him after the first round. Apologies and mea culpa. In fairness, we did get a premier O-lineman. This morning the sun rises and we have cumulatively a fantastic draft. Today we drafted the best ILB, the best Safety and arguably the best RB in the draft. Ty Hopper is a sleeper but is one of the fastest ILB in the draft. Great in coverage. He was a semi finalist for the Butkus award. Oh and with the trade we added two more pics! This, in addition to the free agent signings by Gute gives him an overall grade of A+ Luv it! PS MarShawn Lloyd will be the steal of the draft.

I have been highly critical of Gute's drafting but I loved what he did last year even before seeing them take the field and really love it after seeing them play a season. It was brilliant to move down twice and still add Jayden Reed, who had one heck of an impact. I want to say the extra picks were Brooks and Wicks. That's absolutely masterful, equal to some of the best we've seen from Wolf or Thompson, who both had epic draft moments.

It's the same this year. I thought Edgerrin Cooper was the obvious choice at LB. Gute got him and picked up an extra 5 & 6 in the process. That's a pretty good lottery ticket, along with a couple more that might turn into more than expected. Either way, they ramp up the competition for the bottom 10 roster spots. That's also good.

So far this has been a really good draft for the Packers, addressing needs AND getting good players.

Takeaways...
After being initially underwhelmed by the Morgan pick-- I think we all wanted something flashier--the Packers got four guys who are going to play. Lloyd is a role-player early, but Morgan, Cooper, and Bullard are likely to be regulars maybe from day 1. We can argue over whether that signifies glaring roster holes or good players...it's some of both--and it's good drafting.

Not such a fan of the Hopper pick. Evals vary wildly on him, and I see some of the comparisons to Oren Burks. But it's the end of Rd. 3 and they needed help in the LB room.

People just need to get over the fact that the Packers--and apparently most GMs--didn't think as much of Dejean as fans did.

Day 3...
Only ONE OL so far...I expect 2-3 more. Packers like to take OTs, but that list is pretty picked over...teams leaned into that OT depth (Rouse, OK? Thomas, La-Laf? Grable, USF? Jones, TX?). There's still quality in the IOL pool, though. Do the Packers draft a C-only prospect? Van Pran? Limmer? Nourzad? That would be very interesting in what it says about their OL plans.

Still CB and plenty of S candidates to be had. I think DB an OL will be a focus early on day 3.

With so many picks in day 3, it's a smorgasbord for the Packers.

Your thoughts on the offensive linemen left, mirror mine, but I think they'll take Christian Mahogany or Mason McCormick (guards) if one of them is there at 126; both fit the Packers' needs and standards. Sadly, I think they will both be gone before that.
Either one would give Sean Rhyan a run for his money, and they'd let J Morgan focus on Left Tackle, where he belongs.

If someone had told me before the draft that the Packers would come away from day two with Cooper, Bullard and Lloyd I would have been ecstatic. They filled every obvious hole with quality players.

Hopper is a bit of a mystery to me and I was surprised they passed on Wilson to take Hopper. Apparently Wilson's injuries and age deterred the Packers. The Packers did need another LB so I will have to trust Gute and the scouting staff.

And yes, day three should be the day of interior offensive linemen and DBs. The Packers have 8 selections today and should find the help they need.

Hopper is certainly the most interesting selection by the Packers so far.

With defensive players like Jaden Hicks, Cedric Gray, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Cam Hart, Kyrhee Jackson, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, Leonard Taylor, Malik Mustapha, and Kris Abrams-Draine still on the board, Gute clearly has a role in mind for Hopper. I have a hard time believing they used a third-round pick on a primarily "special teams coverage" guy.

I agree. I think you will see him in sub packages as a heavy box and in others as a down hill missile. He’s very physical if he’s in motion. As a reaction ILB he will get run over. Absolutely not a Barry ILB, but a piece Hafley can let his instincts loose in certain circumstances and let him shoot.

I disagree with Dobber on him being a risk of Burkes 2. That was Williams in this draft. I think the problem with Hopper is containing his aggression and finding appropriate package roles to harness it.

If anything he reminds me more of early Desmond Bishop In that he can get over aggressive: “screw the call, I can make this play and will.” We loved that, Capers hated it. To be fair it was spectacular when it worked and when it didn’t. He’s got instincts, but he needs to learn to temper them with context. He can cover pretty well in the passing game. Rarely gave up much. In the run game he’s better just letting rip. So a sub package piece initially.

Never heard of Hopper. How is Gutt finding these guys . Wash and Ariz had tremendous drafts with brand names up and down the charts and Gutt has picked guys I never heard of but your correct, the names he is ignoring is beyond puzzling.
Vikes, Lions, bears got way better packes got guys who need work and bring little to the table this year imo.

Andy how can you believe anything
Brian Gutekunst tells you is the truth after this draft.

What back 7 ?? He did an about Face again.
To stand up and say we got are man, and he's versatile.
Was absolutely what a forked tongue devil would say.
And then in the press conference after he played up
to helping Jordan Love.
He states he's happy with the cBs.
Oh really -( After Trading and disciplining your best is just
unbelievable. )
He didn't want Dejean. And he wasn't going to go after
anyone to rock the draft.
He's King in Packer world, and he did everything to make sure
that he runs the packers. So fuck the stockholders.

So kiss this draft good bye-
We got the status Que.
And NOW WE TO PRAY that these guys
are the missing pieces to HOLES that he caused.

Oddly, as Andy points out, Gute told us what they were looking for and gave us a pretty tight frame for who they wanted: an OL who could genuinely start inside and out, an ILB who could cover and tackle and was fast, able to play multiple positions and a safety who could play in the box or deep. He said it post season and he’s said it since.

Well, look at the first 3 picks and that’s exactly what they got and it seems exactly who they wanted. It’s ironic that we were all too busy not listening to what he or Hafley said looking for subterfuge when they essentially stated what they would try to do clearly. No pure Ts, no box only S or pure slot and a fast multi-role ILB.

Now I’d expect more role players and depth today, but maybe we should listen more and think less? Maybe that’s how he gets us next year.

This forum, like almost every other Packers forum I've been on over the years, you're better off getting down votes. The majority of those are from the homers that think everything this organization does is right. They kiss this GM's ass like he's the greatest thing ever. He isn't. He could've taken DeJean in the first round and Morgan would've most likely been there at pick 41. Instead he got easily outmaneuvered by the Eagles. Even If Morgan wasn't there at 41, there is no HUGE OL talent drop off after him like some of these clowns are saying. This constant "Packers like versatile players" B.S... which NFL teams wouldn't want versatile players? Obviously we'll see how it pans out.

Just like every year, there'll be hits and misses, but in the end, we'll be a better team because of this draft. Gutes board will never ever be the same as the common fan, so get used to it.

We tend to look at drafts in the immediate and with each draft in its own bubble. GMs need to be thinking that, but they need to put it in perspective of the broader scheme of contract and roster management over 3-5 years.

Andy, great job on educating those of us who acquire little knowledge regarding these players during the year. I follow the Badgers quite closely during the season and have some knowledge of players Wisconsin plays in the Big Ten, but for the most part, I rely on you lately to inform and educate me regarding potential picks for the Packers during the draft. I plan on becoming a member to help support your broadcasts to better ensure they keep coming. Best of luck to you.
