In a post draft interview Gute was asked about the trade back and Dejean and he responded that the deal to trade back was completed before it was announced that the Eagles moved ahead of the Packers to take Dejean. He said the Packers "had a very strong board at the time" and thought trading back would not hurt them at all.

Take anything GMs say at draft time with a grain of salt, but he really had little reason to mislead after the fact. The Packers just may not have been as high on Dejean as the fans were.

I agree that missing on DeJean hurt. But that's how the draft rolls sometime. I detest the philosophy to "move up to get the guy". I'm firmly in the camp of quantity over quality in the draft, just because "quality" is so elusive to hit. Give me more tickets in the draft lottery every time.

I would have loved the scenario of adding both Coopers in rnd 2. It didn't work out. They got one of the Coopers and upgraded Safety by a longshot over the status quo before the draft. And gave themselves 2 more lottery tickets in the process. That's great drafting, IMO.

Bullard has played slot, SS and FS. He’s the consensus best interchangeable S in the draft. DeJean is a slot corner who hasn’t played safety at all. To say that DeJean was the best S in the draft is ridiculous.

I have been highly critical of Gute's drafting but I loved what he did last year even before seeing them take the field and really love it after seeing them play a season. It was brilliant to move down twice and still add Jayden Reed, who had one heck of an impact. I want to say the extra picks were Brooks and Wicks. That's absolutely masterful, equal to some of the best we've seen from Wolf or Thompson, who both had epic draft moments.

It's the same this year. I thought Edgerrin Cooper was the obvious choice at LB. Gute got him and picked up an extra 5 & 6 in the process. That's a pretty good lottery ticket, along with a couple more that might turn into more than expected. Either way, they ramp up the competition for the bottom 10 roster spots. That's also good.

Your thoughts on the offensive linemen left, mirror mine, but I think they'll take Christian Mahogany or Mason McCormick (guards) if one of them is there at 126; both fit the Packers' needs and standards. Sadly, I think they will both be gone before that.
Either one would give Sean Rhyan a run for his money, and they'd let J Morgan focus on Left Tackle, where he belongs.

If someone had told me before the draft that the Packers would come away from day two with Cooper, Bullard and Lloyd I would have been ecstatic. They filled every obvious hole with quality players.

Hopper is a bit of a mystery to me and I was surprised they passed on Wilson to take Hopper. Apparently Wilson's injuries and age deterred the Packers. The Packers did need another LB so I will have to trust Gute and the scouting staff.

And yes, day three should be the day of interior offensive linemen and DBs. The Packers have 8 selections today and should find the help they need.

I agree. I think you will see him in sub packages as a heavy box and in others as a down hill missile. He’s very physical if he’s in motion. As a reaction ILB he will get run over. Absolutely not a Barry ILB, but a piece Hafley can let his instincts loose in certain circumstances and let him shoot.

I disagree with Dobber on him being a risk of Burkes 2. That was Williams in this draft. I think the problem with Hopper is containing his aggression and finding appropriate package roles to harness it.

If anything he reminds me more of early Desmond Bishop In that he can get over aggressive: “screw the call, I can make this play and will.” We loved that, Capers hated it. To be fair it was spectacular when it worked and when it didn’t. He’s got instincts, but he needs to learn to temper them with context. He can cover pretty well in the passing game. Rarely gave up much. In the run game he’s better just letting rip. So a sub package piece initially.

Never heard of Hopper. How is Gutt finding these guys . Wash and Ariz had tremendous drafts with brand names up and down the charts and Gutt has picked guys I never heard of but your correct, the names he is ignoring is beyond puzzling.
Vikes, Lions, bears got way better packes got guys who need work and bring little to the table this year imo.

This forum, like almost every other Packers forum I've been on over the years, you're better off getting down votes. The majority of those are from the homers that think everything this organization does is right. They kiss this GM's ass like he's the greatest thing ever. He isn't. He could've taken DeJean in the first round and Morgan would've most likely been there at pick 41. Instead he got easily outmaneuvered by the Eagles. Even If Morgan wasn't there at 41, there is no HUGE OL talent drop off after him like some of these clowns are saying. This constant "Packers like versatile players" B.S... which NFL teams wouldn't want versatile players? Obviously we'll see how it pans out.

This draft compared to our foes in the nfc north sucks. I keep saying he avoids the big names who can step in right now because the cookie jar has no money, Rodgers and Bak have it all. Developmentals won't expect much. Ya kiss this draft goodbye. Kiss gutt goodbye

We tend to look at drafts in the immediate and with each draft in its own bubble. GMs need to be thinking that, but they need to put it in perspective of the broader scheme of contract and roster management over 3-5 years.

Really. Why do we always have a ton of positions with need? Because once we develop someone they leave for Mo Money.
