Game-Changing Play of the Week: Raven Greene Sack Allows Packers to Pull Away
Raven Greene's sack of Matt Ryan toward the end of the second quarter gave the Packers an important scoring opportunity.
By TimBackes

Another week, another impressive victory for the 4-0 Green Bay Packers. Despite missing Davante Adams and Allen Lazard (among other cogs in this highly efficient offensive machine), the Packers cruised their way to another 30 points, spreading the ball around effectively and introducing the world to Robert Tonyan Jr., Big Bob, Large Robert, Roberto Grande or whatever else you'd like to call the Packers' blossoming tight end.
This week, it's a defensive play that takes home the Game-Changing Play of the Week. I had a bit of difficulty choosing between two: the Falcons deciding to kick a field goal after a 20-play drive (a horrendously cowardly decision), or the Raven Greene sack near the end of the first half that allowed the Packers to get the ball back and score again, widening the score gap to an extent the Falcons would never recover from.
I posed the question on Twitter, and it seemed most respondents believed the Greene play was the more important of the two.
Which do you think was the more important play last night?
A) Falcons settling for field goal after 20-play drive
B) Raven Greene sack on third down, forcing Falcons to punt back to Packers with plenty of time for another TD before the half— Tim Backes (@timbackes) October 6, 2020
Hard for me to disagree, as I stated it would be in the moment.
That sack is going to be a likely choice for my @cheeseheadtv game changing play of the week if the Packers double up. Two scores could basically end it barring an absurd, Falcons-like collapse.

While the Packers didn't end up doubling up, it still managed to be a crucial moment of the game. So let's take a look!
The play
Here's the @RaayGreene sack on Matt Ryan that set the Packers up for a score before the half expired that essentially sealed the game. Watch @KrysBarnes run over poor Brian Hill trying to pick up the blitz pic.twitter.com/IIQMuLmETq

There are several things I love about this play.
First, there's Greene himself, the man who makes the sack. Green moves to blitz up the middle, then sees what's happening to the pocket and the potential for Matt Ryan to attempt to escape outside. He remains patient, keeps his eyes on Ryan, then takes off and tracks him, and makes a not-particularly-easy open field tackle to bring him down and prevent a last-second throwaway attempt.
Great work by Greene here to remain patient, diagnose what's happening with the play and then follow the quarterback to the outside.
Second, watch Krys Barnes in the middle, number 51. Play-by-play announcer Steve Levy stays the blitz is "picked up" in the broadcast audio, but that's a bit of a technicality. Barnes basically plows right over Falcons running back Brian Hill, and causes the panic that forces Matt Ryan to the outside, where Greene is able to track him down for the sack.
With his own running back flying back toward his feet, Ryan has no choice but to try to escape, and when he does, Greene is right there to pick up the pieces.
Great play by both of these men. You can't say enough good things about what Barnes has done so far without ever having been expected to be a significant contributor for this defense, and it's great to see Greene back in the action affecting plays as well.
After this play, the Falcons were forced to punt, and the Packers took over at about midfield with more than a minute and a half left, and timeouts to spare. A touchdown pass to Robert Tonyan later, the Packers were taking a 20-6 lead into the half, with a possibility for a double up.
While that double up never manifested, the Packers never looked back; they held the Falcons to 16 points and scored yet another touchdown to Tonyan, and kept a comfortable distance between themselves and the Falcons on the scoreboard all night.
Sucks to have to wait a couple weeks for more Packer football, but here's hoping the team can get healthy and come back ready to take down the Buccaneers in Tampa! Go Pack Go!

Greene back playing significant snaps was a welcome sight generally last night. We finally have a hybrid in the hybrid role and one with field awareness.

Greene was not only playing good sideline to sideline but he filled the hole like a real lb a couple of times. This d showed up. Granted. They are built to play a finess team like atl. But the packers d was much more physical than the falcs and played there best game of the season.

the plays by Barnes and Greene show toughness, determination and speed. Can't ever have enough of those qualities on defense. Now to get healthy and stay healthy through the break. GPG
