Packers will sign DT Daylon Mack to final roster spot

The former fifth round pick for the Ravens spent time on the Lions and Giants rosters this summer

Rob has the goods:

Mack will fill the final open spot on the 53 man roster.

A former teammate of Kingsley Keke at Texas A&M, Mack has had traveled an interesting path since being let go by the Ravens a few weeks ago.

He was picked up by the Detroit Lions and then waived just a few days later. Then he was signed by the New York Giants in mid-August but was released yet again in last weekend's league wide cutdown to 53 man rosters.

There's some fun college tape of this kid out there:

Mack could certainly provide some much needed run stuffing help up front.

We'll see how quickly the Packers throw him into the defensive mix.

WOW! Daylon Mack to Green Bay is excellent news. Mack is the type of player who can legitimately take some of the snaps off of an over used Kenny Clark, without suffering a huge drop in production.

Throughout the April draft I believe we ALL knew DL, especially NT, was a necessary addition if the Packers hoped to better their run D.

What I really like is Mack already has one solid year of NFL development under his belt. Most rookie OL and DL are less effective players simply because they lack the bulk, strength and mass of their NFL counterparts. When Gutekunst bypassed the position in the draft, tapping the market for an already developed NT was my immediate thought. The Packers’ need for quality, young talent as a “plugger” in run D was both urgent & immediate. Mack is young, with HUGE MASS at 6-1 336 and nearly immoveable with his low center of gravity. His lack of height gives him built-in leverage. EXPLOSIVE first step with a non-stop motor. Being only a 2nd year player AND a former teammate of Kingsley Keke is fantastic value for Green Bay and Brian Gutekunst, who clearly delivered with this signing.

Low center of gravity gave him what has been described as a “forklift move” to displace OL from their spots. You can see it all the time in his highlights. His explosion into opponents catches them off-guard, and then he uses his leverage to push them up and away.

Mack is an effective player who had good sack numbers as a senior for a pure 1-tech NT. In 13 starts 2018 Mack had 32 tackles, 10 TFL and 5.5 sacks, with 108 tackles. Totalled 27 TFL and 8 sacks in his career at Texas A&M. Former 5 star recruit. Had lackluster Sophomore and Junior seasons. His Senior year was another story and was a R3-4 projected pick in the 2019 draft.

Mack has nimble feet with great hand use to shed blocks and a power punch. He catches many OL off guard with his explosive first-step quickness, and he doesn’t relent. I totally, totally dig that he’s being paired with Keke again. That should provide some good cohesion on our DL when those two work together.

While many of us may have wanted Snacks Harrison, Gutekunst did mention recently that “this is a young man’s game.” Perhaps they sign BOTH Mack AND Snacks, and ditch Montravius Adams. That would make one hell of a DL fix for the Packers run D.

Realistically, Mack may not be a starter, which could be the reason why he became available. His lack of length is not prototypical for NFL tackling range.

Don’t let that fool you. Mack & fellow teammate at Texas A&M, Kingsley Keke, paired as part of the nation’s #2 ranked rush defense (yards) in the NCAA 2018. Daylon Mack is a high effort player who will provide quality depth. I really like this signing. HUGE!

Really fits that Gutekunst “VALUE” quality of signing.

Greengold, a lot of nice accolades and I hope that shows up if he gets playing time. I wonder why the other three teams cut him if he has those attributes thou! It wouldn’t be the first time a gem went under the radar.

Probably has limited lateral movement. Maybe he can drop 10-15Lbs and get some quicks?

So, we had a castoff named “the gravedigger” and now we got a castoff from Detroit soon to be nicknamed “the forklifter”. Lets hope for 10+ year career from Mack as we received from Gilbert “gravedigger” Brown. Interesting they had very similar combines and size.

Hold on! Why was this guy dropped by 3 other teams? As mentioned NT is a hard to find position. Why did these other teams give up on him? He may not be what you think he is or hopefully every other team just missed on him. We'll see.

Yeah, there's a lot of that "Why was he released by 3 other teams?" stuff flying around... Some research:

Not a prototypical NFL NT from a height/arm length standpoint. However, his motor, first step, hand use and feet cannot be questioned. Not to mention his BASE. Holy crap. The guy cannot be moved. Also, he is a very pure NT, 0/1 tech. Not the most versatile player, as craved by many NFL teams today. But the dude can flat out ball at NT.

BAL has Brandon Williams, almost a carbon copy of Mack, and Justin Ellis backing him up at NT. BAL went through a DL Overhaul this year signing both Calais Campbell and Derek Wolfe. Mack simply became the odd man out after moving "Big Baby" Brandon Williams back to NT on August 1st. Mack only had 9 snaps with the Ravens before they put him on IR. BAL likes DL who they can move all over the line. He was a healthy scratch the first 7 weeks, then they signed Ellis and Peko - forcing the move to IR for the rookie (knee). Was looked at more as a developmental move.

Detroilet runs a 4-3... signed Mack August 2nd then waived him 6 days later with a "failed physical" designation at 80 man roster cut down.

NYG is loaded at DT. They clearly had him in just for a quick look and released him Sept 5th.

Mack is a very pure NT who's stature allows him to get off the ball low with both speed and power. This helps him gain control of the line of scrimmage, and to move his opponent out of the way to attack a ball carrier. Great signing, especially given Mack's history playing alongside Keke this close to season's start.

He's got a real freaking motor, man! What he didn't get was a real chance...

Do we have just another Lancaster or a true hidden gem?

Failed physical in August by Detroit?

Cut by 3 teams?

Always excited when Pack pick up a player but need to keep realistic expectations. Mack is young and no doubt developing, and apparently there has been some injuries. Fingers crossed he comes into his own and Pack found an upgrade to Lowry and Lancaster to help defense take it to new level.

You're misreading it. DET had Mack in for just 1 week prior to 80 man roster cuts... the designation was just that. A designation. That same "designation" was used by BAL to toss him on their IR for a year to develop him, much like the Packers did with Nijman last year. Mack passed his physical just fine in GB.

How many roster adds after August 1st make a team? There are a ton of bobbing heads in that wake of 80 man roster cuts. Add to it, DET plays a 4-3. Most teams want versatile players. Mack is strictly a NT, but he's very, very solid.

This is a super fortunate addition to the Packers roster - especially this late in the yea, the week of game 1.. Kenny Clark NEEDED a quality NT behind him to take some of the snaps off throughout this season. Paired with his old running mate, Kingsley Keke? Holy crap. Well done, Gutekunst!.

My Guy GreenGold.... Great Info - -

Just to add my two cents as to why people question the move and don't believe the Packers HAVE tried to improve against the run. To your point NT is not valued as it used to be. It's why the Packers didn't spend Draft Picks on it or wanted to spend big money. ALL Dline positions in today's schemes are valued mostly on Pass Rush Ability. Stopping the run is no longer a priority. Hey I grew up when the run game was everyone's bread and butter. RBs were the 1st guys drafted. In the words of Borat now "NOT SO MUCH" It's just not the case any longer. It's tough to run the ball down the field, one holding penalty and it can stop a drive.
Also fewer teams implement a true NT and if they do it's just going to be one guy. They are not paying any money to a back-up NT hence tough to make a team as a run stuffing only NT, very limited opportunities.
Fans and media often correlate D-Line with rush defense. in a 3-4 it's not as much Dline, as its DL and LBs. That's why publications often have the Packers with a top 5-10 Dline. When you add Z and Preston with K Clark that's a great Line.

IMO the Move isn't just to give Clark more rest. It's so they can still have a NT and use Clark in a 5 Tech on run downs yet still have a pass rusher within the front 3 Dlinemen. Lowery and Lancaster added ZERO to the Pass Rush and let's face it they weren't better than close to average against the run if that. We can all agree to that, illustrated by the strong arguments to find Dlinemen in the offseason.

I'm probably overstating the value of Mack yet I am very optimistic that it will help, he has the ability to blow up and force back centers/IOL. Check the Salary Cap#'s they are low on cap space scale and really can't afford much so all things considered it looks to be a very solid pick-up.

IMO the Packers have done as much as really could be expected to improve the run D.

1)Spent a year developing Keke and Gary to play Bigger Roles. Like it or not that's how the League works draft, develop and implement.
2)Replaced Martinez with a more Athletic, Dynamic ILB in FA. Drafted an ILB, as well as developing 2 current guys.
3)Raven Greene is coming Back from Injury
4) Replaced Tramon, who we loved and could cover (which IS the Priority) with an improved DB tackler
5)Signed a 350# explosive NT in FAs
6) and maybe most importantly have both coaches and players more focused on accountability as in sticking to your assignments.

We all want to see the big splash moves and that's what the media focuses on. The reality is if you are already a solid team, which the Packers were Graded the #8 Defense in the League by PFF, you need to rely on incremental gains with continuous improvement. It's not flashy, doesn't make for great headlines or national news yet it WILL improve performance and in the end THAT'S what we all want to see.

Lets GO PACK

Yep, That's the point.... he's a great pass rusher for an IDL. Not just a run stuffing NT. Plus why you're not going to sign another IDL for big Money.

Actually, under Patricia, Detroit changed to a 3-4 base D. Although as Coach Patricia says over 70% of time they are in nickel or dime. I would say the Packers received some positive insight and are kicking tires. Nothing to get too excited about just nice to see they are trying to fill a hole....no pun intended.

Yeah, murf7777, I think you're going to be VERY happy. This guy can flat out play NT. If that's all you want, your gonna get that all day with Mack. Daylon had 108 tackles, 52 solo, 27 TFL and 8 sacks over 4 years anchoring the Texas A&M DL. Add in, he was a 5 star recruit. He played as a backup his first 3 years at Texas A&M.

Did the Packers DL need a versatile player addition, or a super stout pure NT to help take some of the load off of Kenny Clark? I think that answer is pretty clear.

Mack ought to help the Packers out a lot on short yardage D and goal line stands. Now, we've got some freaking beef to throw out there with Clark, Mack, Lowry and Lancaster.

It will be nice to see runs stuffed behind the line for a change on 3rd/4th down.

I'm not even counting Montravius Adams, as I consider him the absolute bottom of the roster. We'll see what happens with him, but would not be surprised to see him moved shortly.

Mack was a big time recruit in Texas and signed with A&M. He didn't do much his first two years because his attitude didn't match his capabilities. It's not unusual for linemen to be in that position. His senior year was very good. For some reason, I always thought he was a third day prospect, but could be wrong. When the Ravens selected him, I thought they would use him like Green Bay looks to do and alternate him with a starter and keep fresh legs on the field. He will spell Clark and become a roadblock in the run game.
Like all pro linemen, he has to develop the right technique and muscle mass to play in the NFL esp. at NT.

I look at this as a very good signing, because he adds quality depth at a position that came up short in the playoffs last year.

You beat me to it!

I would like to see more video. We know what we have in Elgton Jenkins, the center going against Mack in the Twitter video. If Mack does that on a regular basis against Jenkins in that game and against other opposing players, Green Bay found a diamond in the rough.

I'll never forget Green's hit on Big Ben in Super Bowl XLV -- caused a floater to Nick Collins for a pick six. Probably the highlight of his career.

But Mack does feel like more than just bottom of roster churn in that he checks a critical Packers need box with a young, inexpensive body, and (with luck) Keke will help bring him up to speed quickly. Like this signing.

Being I suspect they will be using Clark more in a pass rush scheme with the Smith bro’s and Gary, they sorely needed a big boy to plug the middle on base D so they don’t play Clark too much thus wearing him out. I hope this guy can be a version of the “grave digger”!

Well, there's a reason that 7 players are inactive each week.
He's a depth and development guy and this serves basically as a draft pick (and higher than he was picked since he does have a year of experience and actually did make the Ravens initial 53 last year before getting hurt).
Good program that produced another Packer and seems to have upside.
It was a great move, but I expect it to pay off more later this year or next.
