The Houston Texans have signed free agent tight end Michael Gaines to a one-year deal, Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports.

Gaines, 30, was a seventh-round pick (232nd overall) out of Central Florida by the Carolina Panthers in 2004. In 83 career games over six seasons with the Panthers, Buffalo Bills (2007), Detroit Lions (2008), and a 2009 season split between the Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns, Gaines has caught 84 passes for 869 yards and 6 touchdowns.

The 6-2, 267-pound Gaines caught 5 passes for 59 yards in 9 games, including 7 starts, for the Browns last season.
