Patriots Sign 7th Round OL Thomas Welch
By admin
The New England Patriots announced the signing of seventh-round offensive tackle Thomas Welch.
Terms were not disclosed.
A two-year starter at Vanderbilt, Welch (6-6, 307) was chosen with the 208th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. Welch entered Vandebilt as a tight end, but injuries prompted the Commodores to move Welch to offensive tackle in 2006. A reserve in 2006 and 2007, Welch started 13 games at right tackle in 2008, and moved to the left side in 2009.
Welch has the strength and athleticism to be a swing tackle in the NFL, but a lack of speed could prompt a move inside to guard.
Welch is the third of the Patriots' 12 draft picks to sign a contract.
