Packers S Atari Bigby to Undergo Ankle Surgery

Green Bay Packers restricted free agent safety Atari Bigby will have arthroscopic surgery on his injured ankle, Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, the procedure will be performed by Dr. Robert Anderson this Friday, and will sideline Bigby for several weeks.

Bigby has been on the team's "Active/PUP" list, which means he's eligible to be placed on "Reserve/PUP" list when the regular season opens. This would mean the restricted free agent would miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season, but would free up a spot on the 53-man roster.

As I reported last night, the Packers reduced Bigby's one-year tender to $1.6995 million, a $59,500 reduction, for not signing the one-year tender before June 15. Bigby is expected to compete with 2010 third-round safety Morgan Burnett for the team's starting strong safety position.
