NFL News and Notes - April 12, 2010

The big news on Sunday was the Pittsburgh Steelers trading wide receiver Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets in exchange for a fifth-round pick (155th overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Instant reaction on Twitter from those who cover the NFL (paid, and on a daily basis) was that they couldn't believe that a Super Bowl MVP was had for a fifth-round pick. Suddenly Super Bowl MVPs are a meaningful measurement towards future performance.

The bottom line is Holmes is facing a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, which means he's a one slip-up away from an even lengthier suspension. Holmes was also accused last month of throwing a drink in the face of a woman at an Orlando nightclub. Holmes has not been charged in this incident, and another individual has stepped forward to claim responsibility for throwing the drink, but that was another negative off-field incident Holmes was embroiled in, an ever-growing list of incidents that date back to his days at Ohio State.

With Holmes entering the final season of his contract, in which he may only play 12 games, his off-field issues provide zero incentive for the Steelers to sign him to a long-term contract after 2010. So they opted to get something of value from one team that is willing to trade for high-risk/medium-reward players.

Super Bowl MVP on his resume or not, that's better than nothing.
