How else to explain the ridiculous contract the Panthers just handed over to Jake Delhomme? Look, I loved his story as much as the next guy - NFL Europe, backup for the Saints, wins the job in Carolina, leads the team to a Super Bowl then to an NFC Championship, etc, etc.
Then came the injury, the surgery and then a 2008 season that saw him struggle mightily against less than stellar defenses. The team made the playoffs on the strength of a resurgent run game that kept the Panthers from having to ask Delhomme to win the game. And then Delhomme went into the playoffs and had the worst performance at the quarterback position in a playoff game since Brett Favre threw six picks against the St. Louis Rams.
Look, Delhomme was fine. He's not anymore. He stares down Steve Smith way too much, and when he doesn't he almost never works the safeties with his eyes. His decision making has gotten downright painful to watch - and for this the Panthers give him 20 million guaranteed? It just makes no sense...
