Jason Taylor Visits the New York Jets

ESPN's John Clayton reports the New York Jets are visiting with free agent linebacker Jason Taylor today.

Clayton reports that Taylor arrived in New York this morning, and is being "heavily recruited" by the Jets.

Taylor has spent 12 of his 13 NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins, who selected Taylor out of Akron University in the third-round (97th overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft. Taylor has posted 127.5 quarterback sacks during his career, producing double-digit sack totals in six seasons, each ending with a trip to the Pro Bowl. Taylor was three-time first-team All-Pro, and was named the Associated Press' 2006 Defensive Player of the Year in 2006, as well to the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 2000s.

Before the 2008 season, Taylor was traded by the Dolphins to the Washington Redskins in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft (Pat White), and sixth-round pick (174th overall) in 2010. Taylor struggled with injuries in Washington, producing just 3.5 quarterback sacks in 13 games. The Redskins released Taylor last March, and he re-signed with the Dolphins in May.

Taylor started 15 of 16 games for the Dolphins in 2009, totaling 42 tackles, including 7 quarterback sacks, which tied for second-most on the team.

The Jets' interest in Taylor doesn't come as a surprise, as the Jets' pass rush produced just 32 sacks during the regular season, a sack of rate of 6.39%, which ranked 16th in the NFL. The Jets posted 7 quarterback sacks during the playoffs, but often relied on Rex Ryan's imaginative blitz packages to get to the opposing quarterback. Inside linebacker David Harris (2) and safeties Jim Leonhard (1) and Kerry Rhodes (1) produced the biggest sacks, while veteran outside linebacker Bryan Thomas was the only edge rusher to reach the quarterback in the playoffs.
