Colt McCoy's QB Premium

The Cleveland Browns have confirmed the signings of third-round picks Colt McCoy and Shawn Lauvao.

McCoy is said to have received a "quarterback premium", but his signing bonus ($751,000, as reported by Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer) is in-line with what a player chosen with the 85th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft would expect to receive, regardless of position. McCoy's base salaries are also at the league minimum, so how does the "quarterback premium" come into play?

2013 base salary escalators.

According to a source with knowledge of the contract, McCoy's primary 2013 base salary escalator is both higher and easier to trigger than the 2013 base salary escalators in other Browns' rookie contracts.

McCoy also has additional base salary escalators in 2013 which are tied to individual and team performance, as well as Pro Bowls.

McCoy's $2.541 million contract can be worth as much as $4.966 million dollars.
