Welcome to a special early edition of Opposition Research, where I’ll be taking a look at the Packers Thanksgiving opponent, the Detroit Lions.  It’s been 6 weeks since the 26-0 shutout at Lambeau Field, with the Lions spending the intervening weeks losing to the Rams, Seahawks, and Vikings by a combined 40-76, before earning win #2 over the Browns 38-37 (Btw, Mangini’s an idiot).  It’s a quick turnaround for both teams, so let’s get look at what awaits the Packers in Detroit Rock City this year.

Welcome to Opposition Research, where I’ll be taking a look at the next Packers opponent, the Detroit Lions.  In contrast to Week 4’s monumental and record-breaking showdown with the Vikings, this week’s game is a “ho hum, it’s the Lions” kind of game.  The line is 13.5 and the city of Detroit cares more about the upcoming bidding for the Silverdome than this week’s game.  Nevertheless, I’ll see what I can do to hype up the matchup between the injury-riddled Lions and the bye-rested Packers.

Grady Jackson still has some gas left in the tank (and probably lots of other stuff as well) and I completely understand Jim Schwartz and the Lions wanting to get the big veteran in and inserted into the Albert Haynesworth role in Schwartz’ defense. No, Jackson is no Haynesworth, but he’s a big man who can still move and shockingly well at that while providing more than adequate production on third downs as well. Depending on the numbers, this is a very good deal for the Lions…

The story of the three way trade that almost went down involving Denver quarterback Jay Cutler is astounding if only because of the number of teams that seemingly think Jay Cutler is worthy of being traded for. Jay Cutler? Seriously? The kid has been in Denver for three years now and he’s definitely plateaued. That’s not a good thing. Sure, he has the tools but that’s not enough. Cutler has not shown the ability to manage a game and as funny as it seems that you would decry a guy who is a prototypical guy at the position physically for not being a “game manager”, it’s exactly that deficiency in his game that is keeping him from becoming a great quarterback. Obviously, the Lions and Buccaneers think they can refine his game. I’m dubious that he will ever get there. The interesting thing is that now that this hornet’s nest has been poked, it would certainly seem that Cutler has played his last down in Denver.

That sucks. Detroit Rock City got rid of Matt Millen…finally.
