49ers Interview GM Candidate

Hiring a general manager is a top priority for San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York, and Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports that a candidate was interviewed on Tuesday.

"The 49ers definitely interviewed a GM candidate today. I think it happened in SF, but I do not know whom. I know it was not Ted Sundquist", Maiocco tweeted.

UPDATE: Maiocco reports that the 49ers interviewed former St. Louis Rams personnel executive Tony Softli today.

Sundquist, a former Denver Broncos general manager, is not currently employed by an NFL team, and would be available for an interview if the 49ers had interest.Former NFL executives Michael Lombardi, who now works for NFL.com, and Charley Casserly, who now works at CBS Sports, are also potential candidates.

The 49ers will need to satisfy the Rooney Rule by interviewing a minority candidate, with New York Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross and Seattle Seahawks Vice President/Football Operations Will Lewis potential candidates.

The Giants and Seahawks would have to grant permission for Ross and Lewis to interview for the 49ers' job.

Whoever the 49ers hire for the general manager post will have significant input in the hiring of the next head coach.
