Green Bay Packers / 2008 Green Bay Packers / Butler on Packer/Bears game wk 11

Leroy Butler as we all know is awesome.. so is his column-- some fave quotes from his Q&A Who do you think played very well but went unnoticed by the casual fan?
A: Tramon Williams. To me, he had one of the best games. He played tight coverage. They kept picking on him and he has grown to the point where he played very well. I noticed he was in position, they sent (Devin) Hester down the field against him a couple times and they could not do that. I don’t think the fans know that he played very well. I think the Bears wanted to get their tight end, (Greg) Olsen, out on the perimeter because he’s a big guy who can run. He’s going to catch some passes, but for the most part, Tramon held his own the times he was on him. That’s going to be important against New Orleans. If he can play well, that adds a third cornerback in our arsenal. I think they’ve developed a third corner now. word. I think having a starting caliber 3rd CB is the difference in our defense. Every team has to have something no one else has to be successful and Tramon is one of those somethings. How did you think A.J. Hawk played in his first game in the middle?
A: I thought he played exceptionally. He was very physical. He was physical at the point of attack. I think he did something not a lot of linebackers do: he attacked the running back on screen plays. He looked comfortable, he looked in command. It’s different when you’re getting the call from somebody, but now you get the call and then have to spread it out and line guys up. You become a leader, not a follower. You play better when you’re counted on like that. I thought he looked very comfortable. I don’t know if its his natural position. I think he’s a natural linebacker and he can play all three. He’s a natural inside linebacker when you play a 3-4. You can see when he’s chasing to make a play instead of chasing to catch a play. There’s a big difference when you can run sideline to sideline and you have those two big tackles tying up the center. You can just flow. When you’re on the weak side you’re always chasing. I thought he was able to make a lot more plays. If the Packers play more Cover 2, I think he can play like (Brian) Urlacher. slow down Leroy....although for a 1st rounder--- he better start playing like Urlacher

Green Bay Packers / 2008 Green Bay Packers / NFL's #1 Passing Offense- meet your match

I know I tend to post from JSONline a lot but given that the press gazette normally sucks and I can't stand Pelissero and Demovsky (ultimate wanna-be writers)- I tend to favor the 4 times larger and much better written Journal sentinel- I also have said since week 6 podcast that the NICKEL is now our Base Defense. You saw it own in the bears game- if we are going into January at all- it will be with this Nickel D carrying us most of the way. I did not know until reading this article that NO was #1 in the league in passing....but Drew Brees- let me introduce you to Charles Woodson, Nick Collins, Tramon Williams and Al Harris because they will be taking the ball away from you- they will be responsible for your 54% passer rating- when u wake up on Tuesday morning- they will be the reason for the hangover u feel...that and Johnny Jolly... the Packers come into the game ranked third overall in passing defense, having limited opposing quarterbacks to league lows in passer rating (59.5), completion percentage (51.5) and passing first downs (78). On top of that, they lead the NFL with 16 interceptions, six of which have been returned for touchdowns. That's hot. There's no question the Packers have benefited from facing quarterbacks like Chicago's Kyle Orton, Minnesota's Gus Frerotte, Seattle's Charlie Frye, Tampa Bay's Brian Griese and the Vikings' Tarvaris Jackson. But they also did a reasonably good job against Dallas' Tony Romo (82.6 rating), a terrific job against Indianapolis' Peyton Manning (46.6) and a solid job on Tennessee's Kerry Collins (62.9).
In the Packers' 37-3 domination of the Bears Sunday, the pass defense was superb again, limiting a hobbled Orton to 13 of 26 passing for 133 yards, good for a passer rating of 65.1. Backup Rex Grossman completed 4 of 7 for 26 yards and a 65.2 rating.
What made the performance significant was defensive coordinator Bob Sanders' decision to put cornerback Charles Woodson on tight end Greg Olsen and play the Bears with five defensive backs. It was a gamble given how much the Bears like to run the ball, but the way Woodson is playing, along with the faith the coaches have in nickel back Tramon Williams to cover receivers, there wasn't much hesitation to do it. Show me another team in the NFL that can put their BEST cornerback on a TE and OWN an NFL offense. You can't because that team only exists as the 2008 Green Bay Packer Secondary.

NFL and NFC North / NFC North / Greg Bedard breaks down remaining schedule
|
on: November 18, 2008, 12:28:37 PM
|
excellent post by Greg Bedard about the remaining games the North teams have. Check out the chart its cool. btw- if u wanna make any pick bigger just click on it and it will go to full size w/out leaving page.. * The "Opp. Rec. H/A" is the opponents' record either home or away, depending on where the game is being played. For example, New Orleans' record is 4-1 against the Packers because the Saints are 4-1 at the Superdome this season, where they will play the Packers. * "FB Outsiders" are the ranking for the opponent according to the weighted DVOA over at Football Outsiders. It is only through Nov. 11, so we'll update the new numbers when they come out on Tuesday. * "FBO WDVOA" is the weighted DVOA number from Football Outsiders for each opponent; * "Sagarin" and "Sag. Rating" refer to the Jeff Sagarin rankings over at USA Today and each team's rating.
A few things that jump out:
* The Vikings have by far the hardest schedule, with four of six teams being .500 or better -- and they still have one game with Detroit left (something Chicago can't say). * The Packers and Bears play three teams that are below .500. * The Packers are playing most of their teams at the right place. Houston, Jacksonville and Detroit are a combined 1-13 where the Packers play them. * The Bears have it much tougher in that respect. They get Houston in Houston, where the Texans are 3-2 (compared to 0-5 on the road). And Jacksonville is much better on the road 3-2 than they are at home, where the Packers get them. * The Packers have two short weeks because of Monday night games. * The Bears have one extremely short week (vs. NO) because of Thursday night game. But if Chicago can come through there, they will have 11 days to prepare for what could be the NFC North championship game against Green Bay at Soldiers Field in Week 16.

Green Bay Packers / 2008 Green Bay Packers / Week 11 Injury & Team Status

From Bedard at JSONLINE with a summary of McCarthy's press conference: * Nick Barnett will have his surgery on Thursday; * Donald Driver (knee bruise) may miss practice on Thursday. He also has some "little things" that he's dealing with; * McCarthy pointed out the Packers have to deal with two Monday night football games among their final six games. "That's a challenge from a scheduling standpoint." * Aaron Rodgers came out the best physically he has in any game. "I don't think he was hit." Rodgers will likely practice all week. Chad Clifton will go back-to-back at some point this week. * You have to play your best football in November and December. * On the offensive line: "I thought they were excellent both in run blocking and pass blocking. With run blocking, we were able to get the running back to the second level consistently." * "I thought A.J. played very well. Didn't look like we missed a beat as far as communication...He was productive in the running game, he played downhill, and in the passing game. He graded out very well." * The Packers go to a winter schedule starting this week. The Packers shave off 15 minutes each of practice and playing time. * McCarthy thinks the Packers have played well this year even though the results haven't been there at times. "I haven't walked off the field saying, 'Man, we were not good today.'" * McCarthy said he thought about getting Matt Flynn in the game -- "We had him warmed up and ready to go but it didn't work out from a timing standpoint...We didn't want to put him in the middle of a series. But I would have liked to get him in there."

Here are Aaron's (CHTV) Gut reactions from Sundays game: * The Bears Still Suck * Tory Humphrey can play. Who knew? * Loved seeing Grant making moves in the second level * A.J. Hawk played an excellent game in the middle, but let’s hold off on the ‘move him to the middle next year’ calls until the Packers play a more dynamic offense - like next week * I was just shocked at how slow the Bears seemed on both sides of the ball * Wonder if McGinn or Dougherty question the playcalling this week? * Rodgers had a good game, but he simply has to stop staring guys down - it’s gonna cost him * It’s almost like this team is built for playing in November in Lambeau, rather than in a dome… * What in the world has happened to Devin Hester? * Bob Sanders fever. Catch it!
