Five Green Bay Packers will lose their jobs by September 1st. Let's start a huge argument on who they might be.

I am extremely under the weather today (haven't felt this sick in quite some time) so I am going to make this short and sweet and then turn it over to all you hoodlums that hang out here for discussion.

The Packers have to cut five players by September 1 to get the roster down to 75. Here are the ten players I think those five will come from. Here is your opportunity to tell me how wrong I am.

1. Ronald Talley

2. Trevor Ford

3. Jake Allen

4. Kregg Lumpkin

5. Stryker Sulak

6. Andrew Hartline

7. Kole Heckendorf

8. Duke Preston

9. Brian Brohm

10. Durant Brooks

I leave you to argue amongst yourselves. I yield the floor to the real pundits.

Voted no on Brian Brohm as there was no option for not yet. I doubt he is on the 53 man roster. I'd say he is lucky to be on the practice squad as I doubt he'll go on waivers.

I wrote a big ol explanation over at RBC... but I dont think Brohm is going to get cut this year. He will be on the 53.

Talley, Ford, Hartline, Sulak, and Preston. first 5 cut.

"Let’s start a huge argument on who they might be."
~lmao

I will crap myself if Brohm is cut. Since they can't practice squad his butt, I'de say he makes the 53 man roster as well. No way they're going to cut a second round draft pick. They won't cave just yet.

No going to cut Preston just yet, because they brought him in as a FA. Again, the organizational ego plays a factor here. Probably gone after we get down to 75 though

Heckendorf may be injurred. There may be enough up-side to put him on injurred reserve, or maybe they'll come to an injury settlement and part ways. And now that Heckendorf is down it seems like it's Swain, Allen and Harris fighting for two practice squad spots. If one makes the roster (not likely), I'de say the other two would be on practice sqaud. Either way I think Allen lives to see 75. He's had a more than decent camp and some good speed.

Brooks is probably gone and but we're not settled on Kapinos. Me says they'll keep their options open with punters.

Brohm will not be cut. First reason, Flynn is injured and they currently need a practice arm AND a backup QB should Rodgers be hurt. Brohm knows McCarthy's system and the system is a complex thing that takes time to learn. Second, Brohm is better this year, as we saw in the game against Buffalo when he had the good series that unfortunately ended with the pick. It takes a while longer for the light to come on for some players and I suspect Brohm is one of those guys. His personality seems to be that of a very exacting player with borderline control freak tendencies. This is the personality type that will take the longest to develop at this level as this type has to feel that he has mastered his position before he will develop a comfort level with the unpredictable nature of playing quarterback at the professional level. Third, the Packers drafted two QBs last year in order to start a QB factory ala the Holmgren years, where they developed QBs like Matt Hasselbeck and Mark Brunell, then traded them for high draft picks. Flynn was no doubt projected to be a guy they could develop while Brohm was probably considered a value pick because of his fall to the the 24th pick of the 2nd round. I argue that next year will likely be crunch time for Brohm as I imagine the Packers will draft a QB in the latter rounds who could be stashed on the practice squad or elevated to the 53 if Brohm flops in the preseason. Brohm's main remaining issues this year are improper mechanics and thinking too much, both are correctable over time in my opinion. Brohm still retains his size, mobility, intelligence and arm strength and this combination of qualities are not trivial in my opinion and I suspect the Packers share this view.

...the same drive that was helped out considerably by a pass interference (by far the longest play of the drive).

Good points on everything else. Nice to see someone going against popular opinion

Brohm won't be cut. Preston won't be cut, for now. Maybe when they trim to 53. The rest I pretty much agree with. Don't know if they'll cut Sulak after just getting him, but if they have enough evaluation on him, they just might.
-
Let's get this clear. There's NO WAY Brohm isn't in the 53 man roster. Well, there're 2 ways: a pro bowl qb (that still has something left in the tank) is cut by his team, or he's injuried and placed on the injury reserve. Unless one of those happen, at least for this year, Brohm will be on the 53 roster, like it or not.
-
And if you can put Brohm in there, one that you know won't be cut, WHY THE HELL DON'T YOU PUT BUSH IN THERE???? DID YOU SEE THAT AWFUL, AWFUL ANGLE HE TOOK ON THAT LONG BILLS RUN??? Bush is awful. (The 4 of them)

Wow, how about we cut the 5 worst players:

1. Devin Frischknecht - good as gone with leg perhaps IR but I doubt it
2. Stryker Sulak - I mean come on this guy is gone
3. Jake Allen - We have to cut one of our 500 WR's
4. Ronald Talley - Gone
5. Evan Dietrich-Smith - Way worse than Preston sorry!!

I thought Dietrich-Smith was rather impressive. Otherwise, I think your list is right on. Sad thing about Frischknecht though.

Brohm finally had a decent preseason game and everybody is calling CUT HIM. He played well and had some might good tosses. He went 12 of 19 and had a drop or two in there. That is pretty damn good.

Didn't that pic he tossed remind anybody of the 2008 NFC Championship game?? It did to me, Favre tossed that same ball in the same situation.

Brohm had his best day as a pro.

17 players cut before Brohm: (make that 21)

1. Kregg Lumpkin
2. John Kuhn
3. Brett Swain
4. Jake Allen
5. Kyle Heckendorf
6. JaRon Harris
7. Evan Moore
8. Devin Frischknecht
9. Dane Randolph
10. Andrew Heartline
11. Evan Dietrich-Smith
12. Ronald Talley
13. Dean Muhtadi
14. Anthony Toribio
15. Alfred Malone
16. Cyril Obiozor
17. Danny Lansanah
18. Joe Porter
19. Trevor Ford
20. Charlie Peprah
21. Durant Brooks
22. DeShawn Wynn

Average at best you mean. You forget 1 INT and no TDs. How does the Favre comparrison help his cause?

Brohm is on our 53, and our 3rd QB. TT will make the right decision unlike many of the masses out there. Thank goodness we have a GM with a backbone!!

I've been waiting for him to get a shot at KR. He did it for 4 years in college and did very well at yet. I just hope he makes the practice squad because I think he could develop into a very good receiver over time. Didn't play football until senior year of HS.

There is alot of talent in that list.. it would be a shame if we have to cut guys like Kuhn, Wynnn, Peprah, Swain or Lumpkin ..

Yes, he had his best day as a pro. Instead of being a complete train wreck, he just plain sucked. He had two receivers open deep. He underthrew the first one, James Jones (luckily he was bailed out with a pass interference call), and overthrew the second (Jake Allen). He had two balls batted down at the line of scrimmage. Several throws were way off target, and some of the completions did not hit the receiver in stride, but I guess I'm getting picky here. His accuracy WAS better than before, I'll give you that.

As for the interception, I fail to see any resemblance between it and Favre's interception against the Giants. Favre threw into a one-on-one situation and the CB undercut the route to get the pick. It was not a bad throw per se--the CB just sniffed it out. Brohm's throw was about six feet too high for the intended receiver (Jordy Nelson) and was picked off by a CB who was guarding a different guy.

Brohm's completion percentage against Buffalo was 63.2%. Last year Aaron Rodgers completed 63.6% of his passes. Now granted, Brohm and his happy feet don't look nearly as comfortable in the pocket as Mr. Rodgers, but he's completing passes. My guess is TT is hoping Brohm improves enough to get some trade value out of him. Trade him to a team that thinks they can make him into a quality backup or hopes he comes out of his shell and becomes the QB most people thought he would be.

I completely agree with Alex. Wynn is probably a trade. We've got a nice group of running backs, all of which have showed some promise, TT will try to get some trade value out of them.

Consider the sample size. What has Brohm's combining completion % been this preseason. Last week was his highest completion %. What was Rodgers' highest completion %? I think most of us agree though, he's live to see another camp.

They may not cut Wynn, but if they don't keep Sutton, it's a dumb decision. This kid cannot go to the practice squad. Some team will pick him for sure. Yeah, he doesn't block like Wynn does. Guess what he does better than Wynn?? That's right. Run the ball.

I am guessing the Packers will have a few extra 6 round picks next year for players that would otherwise have been cut: Wynn, Lumpkin, Kuhn.

They could easily deal Wells also but I think they keep him as a back-up center and that also allows them to slide Spitz to G if Sitton doesn't work out or gets injured. Keeping Wells means that Preston is gone and he may have some value to another team.

I have heard very little about the rookie LT Meredith. I wonder if he will make Moll expendable? They need a qualify LT behind Clifton and I was hoping Meredith would look real good in that roll but it looks Moll gets all the work with the 2's.

The blog-o-sphere group think is in full effect about Brohm but he is seriously better then any other option available right now and I doubt the Packers go into the season with just two QB's. So, Brohm will be on the 53. He just isn't nearly as bad as the everyone thinks and they will give him another year to develop. Besides, Peyton Manning would have happy feet behind a offensive line that included Randolf, Dietrich-Smith, and Moll.

I think Brian Brohm will get cut, but not this season. He's a weak armed QB who was only ever going to be a backup in the NFL, nothing more. He's had problems getting to even backup level and doesn't look at all confident even after his comments at OTAs about being very comfortable with the playbook.

Brohm's accuracy was the main reason the Packers went with him...... well that back fired. So right now he's not only got no power behind his throws but he can't hit his target on short distance either.... that all adds up to a QB getting cut.

Too many people are putting emphasis on the fact that A) Brohm was a second round pick so we won't cut him, and B) we need trade value out of him if we are to move him on. Well personally I don't think it matters, when you stink, you're of no use. It's in no way simillar to the Harrell situation, he just can't get on the field, BUT Harrell does show talent when he is healthy. Brohm is just plain useless.

If Brohm were our only backup he would be sent packing right now as Ted Thompson would fear the onslaught of embarasment if Brohm had to play. As a third stringer it's not so bad. However if he stinks up against the Cards Ted will have to rethink what value he's actually getting out of Brohm and whether he's worth it. This is Brohm's second season and he's shown no improvemet over his rookie season.

Let's not forget that Rodgers stunk it up for at least his first two seasons with the Packers. I'm not trying to compare the two guys, but a year and a half of playing with the twos and the threes isn't enough to say that Brohm will never turn out to be a good NFL QB. Does anyone think Brohm would make it to the practice squad? I suppose there are a couple of teams with a pathetic enough group of QBs that could make room on their 53 for a prospect like Brohm.

As for the RBs: Grant is in, Lumpkin is gone, and I can't imagine they will keep four HBs on the roster. Sutton has impressed, and despite his injury past I really am a Deshawn (sp?) Wynn fan. He is really shifty for a guy of his size. Are there any other guys on the roster that could have pulled off that spin move he had against Arizona for that first down? To me, BJ ranks last in that group of three. He had some solid runs last year but he doesn't really bring anything special to the table IMHO.

I'm worried about Crosby. I know there were holding problems, but is anyone confident in Crosby making a 40 yarder with the game on the line? I sure as heck am not. He's good at kick-offs and he's never afraid to get in there and make a tackle, but I just don't have faith in him when the game is on the line.
