What We’re Watching: Vince Lombardi’s Obituary on the Paul Harvey Show

September 3, 1970

A day Packer fans will never forget.

On this day 42 years ago, Vince Lombardi succumbed to cancer and passed away at the far too early age of 57. More than a coach, he was an expert motivator, master psychologist, an inspiration to countless individuals. Because of his larger than life presence, his legacy lives on to this day.

While his funeral was held in New York, the entire nation was able to hear a eulogy which paid tribute to the coach who led the Packers to 5 world championships in 9 years.

Paul Harvey was a nationally syndicated radio broadcaster from the 1950′s until his death in 2009. His five minute editorial became a staple of conservative radio, and was delivered in his own unique way.

On the morning of September 3, 1970, Paul Harvey took to the airwaves as he normally did. Little did anyone know his performance on this particular day would become one of the most moving tributes that could have been paid to any person, let alone a man who meant so much to so many.

Please take a few minutes and watch this video which contains the original Paul Harvey obituary for Vince Lombardi.

Rest in peace Vince, from all  of Packer Nation.
