When I saw the headline “Trade Nick Barnett” I thought it was a joke. But alas, it was serious, seriously stupid that is.
I’ve reached my breaking point on people talking about high level trades this season. Let’s get real folks; it’s not going to happen. Trade Nick Barnett? Really? Maybe we can package him with Cullen Jenkins and Atari Bigby, two more guys who suffered subpar seasons due to injury. Hell, let’s throw in Grant too just to sweeten the pot.
I’ll admit perhaps Barnett may have underperformed in 2008. I will even agree that there is no guarantee that the knee is 100 percent either. Guess what? The entire defense had an off year last season. It’s was called Bob Sanders.
Finally, for the first time in I don’t know how long, we have some decent depth on the defensive side of the ball. We not only have depth we have swagger and tenacity. Nick Barnett, even on the sidelines, is a big part of that. Number 56 is our defensive leader, both on the field and off. Who fills that role if he was to be traded? The answer is nobody.
There is no question I like Nick Barnett, but let it be clear that he doesn’t get any more slack than anyone else. And from my random discussions with Nick, I am sure he would tell you that. But let me be clear on this, there is no way, absolutely no way, Barnett is going anywhere anytime soon. If he continues to have a bum wheel he might not be around next year, but if he’s healthy, expect him to be a Green Bay Packer for a long time to come.
Let’s get off the hallucinogens and face reality. Nick Barnett, A.J. Hawk, Aaron Kampman, or any other name of note will not be traded anywhere this season. They are far more valuable on the field this year.
Please, lay off the PS3 and PCP.
Trade Nick Barnett… c’mon man.
