I know the Patriots usually have good special teams, but that's because they have good players and Bill Bellichick plays some starters on the special teams. Nobody gets promoted from special teams coach to head coach, and yet it's not uncommon for position coaches to get hired as head coaches. There is very little scheming to do with special teams, as far as I can tell. It's more about motivation and fundamentals. Stay in your lane, block your guy, kick the ball really hard, etc. So if Slocum is a well-respected guy and a rah-rah kind of coach, he'll probably be good enough.
