And yet, it wasn't enough. Plenty of fingers are being pointed. The fault lies with Dom Capers, Aaron Rodgers turnovers, Nick Barnett, Jarret Bush, etc.

Kurt Warner came into the Cardinals – Packers playoff game with the second-best lifetime QB rating in NFL history. Only Bart Starr is better. Did everyone forget about that?

During the Sunday pregame shows on CBS, NBC and ESPN, only one football analyst picked the Cardinals to defeat the Packers (Bill Cowher). Everyone else picked the Packers. 14 out of 15 of the so-called experts were swayed. Swayed by what? The Packers meaningless win the week before against Arizona? The Cardinals lackluster play over the last four meaningless games of their season?

And a host of Packer fans were wrong. The prevailing sentiment in the week leading up to the game was that the Packers would win going away. I kept scratching my head at that. When I predicted the Packers pulling out a close victory (31-27), I was putting on a brave face, but inside, I feared Kurt Warner. In my mind, a close win would be the best case scenario. Packer fans kept telling me it wouldn’t be that close. I wanted to believe, I really did.

Yet I feared that Warner would pick apart the Packers secondary like he did the Vikings secondary in week 13, the last meaningful game the Cardinals had played. Although his numbers in that game came nowhere near those from this past weekend’s spectacle, I gained a healthy respect for his decision-making and timing. Kurt Warner delivers the ball to the right receiver, at the right time and in the right spot.

Enter the Packers secondary, an injury-depleted and seemingly easily-confused mish-mosh of over-rated players and waiver-wire pickups. There, I said it. Excluding, of course, NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Charles Woodson. Can you picture the Packers secondary without him?

Certainly, Kurt Warner and Ken Wisenhunt’s eyes must have popped out like Marty Feldman’s when they studied Packers game films. There was plenty there for them to like. From a supposed All-Pro safety that will make the occasional big play but struggles with consistency to the infamous Jarret Bush, helplessly chasing after his man while trying to locate the ball. Throw in the suspiciously disappearing Atari Bigby, athletic but mentally unprepared Brandon Underwood, and just not NFL-caliber Matt Giordano, and there was bound to be a Cardinal party in the Packers defensive backfield.

The only hope for the Packers, of course, would be to make Kurt Warner uncomfortable. But it had to happen from the base defense, which the Packers have not been able to do against quality opponents. With the 4-5 receiver sets the Cardinals dialed up, blitzing a DB was not a good option. Blitzing another linebacker may have helped, if the Packers had a linebacker besides Clay Matthews that can get to the quarterback.

Unfortunately, they don’t.

Career Stats:

Barnett 15 sacks – 7 years
Hawk 8.5 sacks – 4 years
Chillar 7.5 sacks – 6 years

WIthout the ability to put real pressure on Warner, the Packers were forced to mostly play their nickel and dime packages, putting the defense’s fate in the hands of the secondary. It was a lose-lose proposition.

I expected the Packers offense to be able to put up enough points to win the game, and certainly 45 points would normally qualify. And yet, it wasn’t enough. Plenty of fingers are being pointed. The fault lies with Dom Capers, Aaron Rodgers turnovers, the referees, Nick Barnett, Jarret Bush, etc.

But there’s really only one man to blame for this loss; The man who once before threw 5 TDs in a playoff game, the man with a 9-3 playoff record, the man with the second best playoff QB rating in NFL history; Kurt Warner, the quiet desert assassin who always saves his best for the big games.

And yes, his bust will one day reside in Canton.

Cardinals Coach Ken Whisenhunt seems a little confused about how to spin his team’s lack of effort in the season finale.

When Mike McCarthy said that he was going to play to win in the last game of the season, he was taking the chance that his team might blow out the Cardinals and make them angry for their playoff rematch. The Packers did, in fact, blow out the Cardinals, but whether they gave the Cardinals any kind of emotional edge by doing so is highly questionable.

You may remember that Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt seemed just a little testy after the Packers’ preseason win at Arizona, in which his starters were outscored 38-10 in the first half. He pointed out afterwards that his team hadn’t game-planned. It was probably true that the Packers had game-planned more than his team had, but usually coaches don’t bother to say such things, as it makes them look like sore losers.

Fast forward to the season finale, another essentially meaningless game, and after his team got embarrassed again by a Packer team that had taken the game more seriously than his own team had, Whisenhunt said, “They had their plan. I guess they felt good about what they were doing.” As Dan Bickley suggested in his article in the Arizona Republic on Tuesday, the use of the phrase “I guess” seems a bit telling. Whisenhunt came across as irritated by the Packers’ gung-ho game plan.

Later, when he was defending his decision to allow Larry Fitzgerald to stay in the game in the second half to pad his statistics, Whisenhunt said, “It’s something you would feel sick about had he gotten injured at the end, but I have no doubt in my mind that’s what Green Bay was trying to do with Aaron Rodgers as far as passing statistics, trying to get those things. That’s part of it.” Maybe Whisenhunt knows something we don’t know, but if McCarthy had kept Rodgers in the game solely to pad his stats, why did he sit Rodgers down when he was 25 yards away from the franchise single-season passing yardage record? It doesn’t seem out of the question that McCarthy simply treated this game like any other regular season blowout, waiting until midway through the third quarter before pulling most of his starters.

A couple of Packer players were unimpressed with Whisenhunt’s comments after the game. When interviewed by Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press Gazette, Ryan Pickett had this to say: “You play to win the game. We don’t go out there for fun. We’re going out there to win. We’re sick and tired of hearing, ‘Oh, we didn’t play our starters and stuff.’ So they’re going to get a chance to play their starters this week, and we’ll see what happens.” Cullen Jenkins was similarly unimpressed: “We always play to win,” he said, referring to the alternate strategy employed by the Cardinals. “So I don’t know what that would be like.”

So it appears that Whisenhunt’s approach to the final game, and his comments afterwards, may have motivated the Packers at least as much as they motivated his own team. On Wednesday, Whisenhunt began walking his comments backward: “The only thing I was chafing at is the approach of my football team and how we handled it. I was disappointed with some of the things we did in the game and how we played. It was obvious to me Green Bay was more physical than us, and that was very disappointing to me…. I could see where (McCarthy) would think I was irritated, and I was. But it certainly wasn’t at Coach McCarthy or the Packers. It was more about how we performed.”

If that’s how Whisenhunt felt, why didn’t he say it the first time? It’s amusing that he began this whole thing by making excuses for his players, and his position has now evolved to the point where he is publicly chastising them. Maybe this is all part of some grand motivational strategy that will become apparent next Sunday. More likely, Whisenhunt just didn’t know where his words were leading him. Playing to lose is always problematic from a public relations standpoint.

Will any of this make a difference on Sunday? Maybe, maybe not. These two teams are evenly matched, and it should be a heck of a game. But it does not appear that the Cardinals have any more of a chip on their shoulders than the Packers do right now.

I will soon know who is going to win Sunday's game by tomorrow night.

Once in a great while I try to offer up some detailed analysis around here. I will soon know who is going to win Sunday’s game. There is one key all the reporters are missing…

… my ice fishing trip in the morning.

I am a terribly unlucky guy. I can’t win a bet to save my life, can’t flop an ace when I need one, and certainly am the opponent you will play when your quarterback Tom Brady throws for six touchdowns in fantasy football. Once in awhile I catch a break, but for the most part it’s all or nothing, usually the latter.

This oddity extends to my personal life too. I seem to go on streaks amidst the devastation. I’ll catch a break here, a break there, and seemingly everything is on a roll in the right direction. Much like bad things, these moments of victory always seem to come in threes. I’m due another one of these mini trios of triumph and I expect to powers to be to fully let me know tomorrow morning where the cards (no pun intended) are falling this week.

I will hit the frozen ice on the cranberry bogs of Wisconsin around 6 a.m. Thursday morning. It will be refreshing to hit the brisk Wisconsin air, but more importantly to hit the many bluegills that reside in this red stained mini piece of heaven. It’s always the same at the bogs, you either hook your limit in an hour, or you go home empty handed and dejected. In my life, there is no better way to forecast the future.

Unfortunately, it’s so simple for me that I almost don’t want to go. If I don’t hammer them tomorrow I will know without a shed of a doubt the Packers are going to lose on Sunday. I will also probably lose my wallet on Saturday. Yet, I take this trek still knowing full well that the hopes of Packer nation firmly rests on my shoulders. It is a duty I willingly accept, but the burden I carry along with me is prodigious.

I promise to bring my best game and do my part to bring the trophy back to Titletown.

I’ll let you know who to put your money on tomorrow night.

I really don’t take much away from a game like this one. It’s always nice to go out with some momentum, and a win is still a win. Here are your quick hits.

MVP

Aaron Rodger’s celebration. What do you call that thing?

Like I said, you can’t put much stock into anything but staying healthy and making them think twice about next week. This team is ready, this team is hungry, and this team is severely overlooked right now. I can’t think of anything I like better.

We will be hitting it hard and heavy this week in preparation for the playoffs. I haven’t been this excited in quite some time.

Would the Packers team just stay in Arizona, or make the flight back? Do they play their starters both games to stay mentally fresh and not lose momentum? These are all questions to be answered with just one more win.

I hate to look ahead at all, but with everyone talking about a Packer’s win and a Giant’s loss sealing the playoff picture, let’s explore an odd situation that is going to develop.

The Arizona Cardinals play at Detroit, then host the St. Louis Rams. If the Cardinals win both games (which they should) they win the division.

The Packers play at Pittsburgh and then Seattle. The Packers win one and the Giants lose against either Washington or Carolina and the Pack is in.

If you look ahead to week 17, the Packers would be at 11-4 and the Cardinals at 10-5 having clinched the division.

If this scenario plays out as predicted, guess what happens? Back-to-back regular season and playoff games against the Cardinals.

Now that ladies and gentleman is an interesting scenario. Would the Packers sit their starters, or play generic football in week 17? Does Aaron and the rest of the crew take half the game off to save themselves for the following week? Think about it, neither team will have a single thing to play for in the final contest except a careful game of hide the salami until the following week.

Would the Packers team just stay in Arizona, or make the flight back? Do they play their starters both games to stay mentally fresh and not lose momentum? These are all questions to be answered with just one more win.

Like I said, I hate looking forward, but I know there has been precedence for this before. Just what do you do if you are the Green Bay Packers?

Two Packers Lounge writers, two opinions. Jersey Al and Greg C. show their pride and prejudice for this weeks and this preseason’s performances.

“Rewarding Excellence”

By: Greg C.

With the preseason mostly behind us, here are some players who should be rewarded with more playing time for their outstanding performances.

This has been such a good preseason for the Packers that there is a long list of players whose stock has risen considerably. Outscoring the opposing team’s #1 units to the tune of 76-10 will do that for you. Here is my own list of the players who have proven the most so far and have therefore made a case for getting more playing time when the regular season begins.

Tyrell Sutton

A couple weeks ago, we were wondering if the Packers might keep four RB’s so that Sutton could make the team. Now it looks like he may be the third best RB on the team anyway. DeShawn Wynn has more size and power and ability to pick up the blitz, but he also has a long injury history. Also, Sutton looks like a player who is just beginning to realize his potential, while Wynn is more of a known quantity. It will be very interesting to see how this shakes out.

Jermichael Finley

The last one who thinks Donald Lee is a better TE than Finley, please turn out the lights. I’m not even sure that Lee is a better blocker than Finley anymore, from what I’ve heard about Finley’s blocking in practice, along with what I’ve seen on the field. And there is no comparison between them as receivers. Finley should be awarded the starting TE job. Your best players belong on the field, seniority be damned.

James Jones

The close race between Jones and Jordy Nelson for the #3 receiver spot never really materialized, as Jones was so far ahead by the first preseason game that he was getting a lot more time with the #1 offense. Jones is a more complete receiver, particularly on the short routes and working the middle of the field. He has earned the right to get the most reps in three-receiver sets, although Nelson will still play an important role in the offense.

Johnny Jolly

Unless B.J. Raji plays lights-out in the last week of the preseason, Jolly should start at left end on opening day. He’s been our best defensive lineman in the preseason. Raji’s freakish size-strength combination will probably win the day eventually, but right now Jolly is the guy.

Desmond Bishop

Ask yourself this question: If A.J. Hawk suffered a minor injury and had to miss a game or two, would you be bummed that Bishop had to take his place? Or would you be excited? I don’t know about you, but I would fall into the latter camp. Now, I don’t want anyone to get hurt, and Hawk is a solid if unspectacular player, but Bishop is much more dynamic. He deserves to replace Hawk at least in certain situations, if not all of the time.

Brandon Chillar

The guy who couldn’t beat out Brady Poppinga at OLB last season has been a perfect fit as a 3-4 ILB. I don’t think Nick Barnett will be much of an upgrade, if any, when he returns. Just as Desmond Bishop deserves to be on the field in certain situations, so does Chillar.

Anthony Smith

With Atari Bigby being a non-factor in the preseason thus far, Smith deserves to start. He hits as hard as Bigby used to, and he appears to have better ball skills. I’m not sure what’s going on with Bigby. Maybe he was a flash in the pan in ’07, or maybe he is still trying to get into the flow after returning from last season’s injury. If that’s the case, he’d better do it fast if he wants to keep his job.

“Game Three Winners and Losers”

By: Jersey Al Bracco

Last week I spoke of tempering my excitement and keeping things at a “McCarthy-like” even keel. Well, after whipping the Super Bowl runner-up Arizona Cardinals in the first half to the tune of 38-10, that’s pretty darn hard to do. But I’m still going to try. So once again, let’s take a calm, rational look at this past week’s winners and losers.

Winners

Jeremy Kapinos

With his only camp competition (Durant Brooks) sidelined with a hip-flexor injury, Kapinos went into preseason game 3 as the Packers #1 punter. Kapinos had two punting opportunities in the game (thanks to the Brian Brohm-led second team offense) and did well. His punts covered 52 and 56 yards, respectively, with good hang time.

While many people, (including myself) have been writing that the Packers would be scanning the waiver wire after the final team cuts for another punter, perhaps that was never an option. Here’s what Mike McCarthy had to say in a Sunday press conference when asked if Jeremy Kapinos had won the punting job “Kapinos has the ball. It’s his responsibility to keep it. He’s battled through this competition. I thought he kicked well in the game… I have no interest in going through what we went through last year. We’ll learn from that experience, and I think it’s a great opportunity that he’s handled very well so far.”

The key phrase in there, of course, is the “I have no interest in going through what we went through last year”. That is an obvious reference to last preseason when the Packers cut punter Jon Ryan and brought in Derrick Frost with disastrous results. So it sounds like McCarthy is happy enough with Kapinos to award him the punting job.

While I am a huge believer that winning the field position battle leads to winning in general, if the Green Bay offense is really as good as they’ve shown, then I’m fine with Jeremy Kapinos. The Packers won’t be using him that much, anyway.

Brian Brohm

Nobody has been a bigger critic of Brian Brohm than this writer. While I still don’t think he’ll ever be more than a backup QB in the NFL, I have to give some credit where credit is due. Brohm has actually shown some signs of improvement over the first three preseason games.

In those three games, his QB rating has improved from 0 to 51 to 104.2. Now, I still don’t think he has an accurate enough arm to be successful in the NFL, even if he does get his head straightened out. I still think that comparatively, Matt Flynn was a steal as a seventh round draft pick. And I still want the Packers to get an experienced backup QB on their roster (as I have ranted about before).

But if there’s one thing I strive for, it’s to be fair. Last week I put Brian Brohm on my ‘winners” list as a bit of a joke, noting how he had improved from a 0 rating to a 51 rating. But this week, I actually mean it. I’m taking him off the “favorite whipping boy” list – at least for this week.

Aaron Rodgers

Duh…. OK, so this is an obvious choice, but let me explain. Rodgers makes my list not for his TDs, not for his leadership and not for the results – THOSE are obvious. Rodgers is making my winners list for two less-obvious reasons.

In analyzing Aaron Rodgers play last year, there were three things I thought he needed to improve on. The first one was leadership on the field – and Rodgers showed me that was taken care of in the first two preseason games. The other two things were footwork in the pocket and accuracy on deep passes.

Too often last year, Rodgers took sacks that could have been avoided. He would often turn right into the path of a rusher. Other times, he seemingly couldn’t decide what to do and got ‘frozen” in the pocket as it collapsed around him. The Aaron Rodgers we saw against the Cardinals looked like a completely different player. He did an absolutely fantastic job of moving in the pocket and avoiding rushers, all while still going through his progressions. On the long pass to Driver, a fast-rushing Cardinal defender had him dead to rights, but a quick side-step in the right direction avoided the sack and gave him time to hit Driver down the field.

Speaking of the long completion to Donald Driver, that brings me to my third Rodgers observation. There was really only one pass that Aaron Rodgers had trouble throwing last season – the bomb. His long passes did not have enough air under them, consequently, he under-threw some wide-open receivers and made it easier for DBs to break up some of those passes.

His pass to Driver had plenty of height, allowing Driver to shield the defender from the ball with his body, letting the ball to drop safely into his hands. On the touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson, there was no defender to worry about. In the past, Rodgers might have under-thrown Nelson, allowing the DB to get back into the play. Last night, he led him perfectly. Nelson never had to break stride, resulting in the easy touchdown.

Charles Woodson

Triple Duh… In my opinion, the individual star of the game. Yes, even over Aaron Rodgers. For the last year, whenever I was asked who the Packer’s best defensive player was, I always answered Charles Woodson. For the past month, whenever I was asked by some fan which Packer defender they should take for their fantasy football team, I have always answered Charles Woodson.

And let me say this one final time: Charles Woodson is NOT “getting old”. I have seen this written multiple times by bloggers and professional sportswriters alike. Charles Woodson has played 11 seasons in the NFL and is 32 years old. He is an incredible athlete, keeps himself in outstanding shape and has shown NO signs of a drop-off. If anything, he seems to be getting better. Charles Woodson can easily play another 4-5 years at a very high level and probably a few more years after that, if he chooses. So the next guy who writes about how Woodson is not getting any younger and we need to have a replacement for him ready – well, they will feel my wrath.

Losers

Ruvell Martin

OK, so this really isn’t very fair, but hey, it wasn’t easy finding “losers” in this game. Martin was pressed into holding for field goal attempts and was pretty awful at it. In his defense, he is only the “emergency” holder, but I think the Packers need to look elsewhere in case of emergency.

Martin also was guilty of a mistake near the end of the game, but it’s one you can almost forgive. He recovered the Cardinals onside kick, saw a lane to the goal line and ran it in for a touchdown. A natural reaction, for sure, but the right play would have been to fall on the ball. By scoring the TD, Martin gave the Cardinals the ball back with an opportunity to go win the game. Falling on the ball would allow the Packers to just run out the clock to win the game. Lets just say I’m glad it happened in preseason.

A.J. Hawk

He is the Packers international man of mystery. Against the Cardinals, he was the invisible man. Looking at the game stat sheet, other than being listed as a starting ILB, Hawk’s name is nowhere to be found. No tackles, no assists, no passes defended, no special teams notes. He did play, didn’t he?

25 different players are listed on the Packers defensive stat sheet as having accomplished something ( at least an assisted tackle). Hawk’s name is not among them. Desmond Bishop led the team with 8 tackles.

I don’t have the game to go replay. So maybe I missed something. Maybe he got hurt, but then again, he wasn’t listed in the post game injuries. Maybe he was just rested a lot. Maybe he was semi-benched. If anyone out there knows what happened, please let me know. It’s a mystery to me.

The Rest of the NFC North

Ignoring the Detroit Lions (for this season, at least), what do you think the Bears and Vikings were thinking as they gathered around their TVs Friday night? I’m sure they were curious to see what all the fuss was about with the Packers. After all, this team was 6-10 last year, right? So what do you think was going through their minds as they watched Aaron Rodgers and the Packers first team offense embarrass the Super Bowl runner-up Cardinals? After seeing the Packers put up 38 points by halftime, surely only two words entered their minds: Oh s***!
——————————

The game was certainly a tale of two halves. Either way, what a performance by your Green Bay Packers. Here are the quick hits from last night’s game.

Packers 44 Cardinals 37

Notables

Greg Jennings suffered a mild concussion. He says he is good to go. Let’s just keep Gregorious off the field until week one.

You can’t say enough about the first string offense and defense last night. They were dominating. Although, some say that the Cardinals didn’t prepare for the game all that much.

Aaron Rodgers looked amazing. Seriously, he was making the fourth read all night long. Brett who?

Ryan Grant seems to running with a spark in his step. Seems like the Ryan of 2007.

Terell Sutton probably landed himself a job last night. If I had to guess, the odd man out right now is Lumpkin.

Jermichael Finley is the real deal. Two touchdowns… we so need that.

Donald Driver is still a super-stud.

Jordy Nelson finally got a breakaway long touchdown. Did he lock up the third spot? Hard to say right now.

Sutton showed nothing on kick return. We really need a healthy Will Blackmon.

Brohm looked slightly improved, but not enough for me.

The scrub defense in the second half was TERRIBLE. Luckily, most of those guys won’t be playing in the NFL this season. I can see why.

B.J. Raji continues to improve, making some nice plays in the second half.

Anthony Smith is going to take the starting spot from Atari Bigby.

Mason Crosby needs to get it together or he will be out of a job. It didn’t help that Ruvell Martin is not a great holder.

This game was not nearly as close as the score may elude to. For all extents and purposes this was a blow out in every way shape and form by the first stringers. I was speechless after the first half. Completely and totally owned.

Grades

First Half

Offense A+

Defense A-

Second Half

Offense C-

Defense D-

Final Note

A reader sent me an funny email during the game last night. Apparently, his buddy ordered a Vikings Favre jersey. After waiting several weeks for it to arrive, he finally got it. Here is what it looked like.

Sucker.

I’ve tried to temper my excitement so far this pre-season. This hasn’t been easy, but tonight will go a long way in convincing me the 2009 Packers are for real.

Tonight’s game against the Cardinals will be in my eyes the first real test of this season’s team. It’s the first time on the road, with some weather, and the starters playing at least the first half.

Here is what I am going to be looking for to solidify my belief that the Green Bay Packers are legit.

Al Harris

Can Al Harris take on a big? Not just any big either, the best big in the game Larry Fitzgerald. I am sure Charles Woodson will get his share of Fitz too, but if not, can Al Harris hold his own and will the new defensive scheme cater or inhibit Al’s style of play.

Atari Bigby

Can we get a Bigby sighting please? So far, we haven’t seen a whole lot out of Atari. Bigby was supposed to be the hard hitting missile ala Troy Polamalu in Dom Capers defense. To date, this hasn’t been the case. Atari Bigby, please stand up.

Brady Poppinga

What Poppinga will show up tonight? Was last week’s ball hawking performance just an anomaly, or is Brady Poppinga finally for real? I have never really been on board the Poppinga bandwagon, and tonight will go a long way in deciphering exactly what we have at outside linebacker.

Brian Brohm

The kid has taken a ton of heat this week. Tonight may be Brohm’s last stand. Can he man up in the face of adversity, or will he wilt under the pressure? Brian Brohm is playing for his future; will he show up to greet it?

Tyrell Sutton

Is Sutton the real deal? We will find out this evening as he gets time with the ones. The Packers haven’t had a solid number two for quite some time. Does the rookie have what it takes?

Swagger

Last season, I attacked the toughness of the Green Bay Packers. In 2008 we had a bunch of unemotional pansies hitting the field every week. This year, it seems we have fire, we have swagger, and we have toughness. Will that attitude continue? I hope so.

I don’t know if I have ever been more excited for a pre-season game. Are the 2009 Green Bay Packers a force to be reckoned with? Tonight will go a long way in finding out that answer.

I’ll make sure to make a stop at both spots… if I can drag myself away from the television.
