Roger Goodell Spoke Today-And We’re All a Little Dumber

The Commish decided to speak about the new deal for the regular refs and the debacle that was the replacement refs today.
To say I feel dumber afterwards is an understatement.
Here are just a few of the “highlights” of his press conference:
Talking about the replacement refs versus the regular refs
“Short-term pain sometimes necessary for long-term gain.”
Discussing the interception that M.D. Jennings had and wasn’t called:
“There are controversial calls and people see them differently.”
When asked about the outrage of some of the Packers players:
“We get that and we understand that…officiating has always and will continue to be imperfect.”
And my personal favorite, commenting on the anger over the final play of the Packers/Seahawks game:
“The beauty of sports and the beauty of officiating.”
It’s ok if your head hit the desk after reading those comments, or if the anger that stemmed from Monday’s debacle all came rushing back-because that is exactly what my reaction was.
Rather than just admitting that the replacement refs were an all out disaster, and taking the blame, Goodell felt it necessary to put an epic spin on the entire situation. It is an embarrassment to the league that the person who is supposed to represent the league made such asinine comments. All respect I had left for him evaporated within a matter of minutes this morning.
Goodell must truly think that we are all stupid.
At least he offered his sincere condolences about the entire replacement ref fiasco by saying:
“Sorry to have to put our fans through that”
Yeah, I bet you’re sorry.
Piss off Roger.

Lest you forget, these Refs blow calls too!!! #WhyWeNeededInstantReplayInTheFirstPlace
I long for the days of taking responsibility for one’s actions. A simple statement, “We experimented with the idea of Replacement Refs, and it was a failed endevour. We never anticipated that the inability of our officials would ultimately determine the outcome of a game. The NFL apologizes to the Fans, the Players, and all who have suffered throught this failed experiment. We welcome back the Real Officials.” End of Press Conference and we move forward, somethings just don’t need spun!!!
Preach!
Thanks for this, John. You are absolutely right that Goodell is treating us all like idiots. To say this stuff in public is so arrogant – he must feel that he is untouchable.
Everyone in the NFL preaches accountability – I’d like to see some accountability from the Commissioner.
Utterly astounding and totally lacking in respect.
Thanks Chris, and I absolutely agree. Things would be a lot better if Goodell would man up, admit he was wrong, and apologize for the clusterf**k that the replacement refs were. Instead, he chose to hide.
All respect I had for him is gone
Great stuff John. This encapsulates my thoughts on the issue completely.
However, while trolling the football blogosphere, I came upon the most insightful post I’ve ever read at PFT. I have to say, I think Florio nailed it.
Since I can just post the link instead of paraphrasing, I will.
