Random Thoughts For January 5, 2012

Finally, a moment of peace…

The last three weeks have been a non stop series of activity. From packing up and moving to a new house, two consecutive weekends of holiday festivities, and the back to work blues after the holiday season, free time has been quite difficult to find recently.

While all this was going on, the Packers managed to finish the regular season 15-1, best record in franchise history, and lock up the number one seed in the playoffs. Not a bad way to end a very memorable 2011.

Since time has been a precious commodity recently, time to write has been limited as well. Periodically, I threw a thought or two on Twitter about the Packers, but sometimes tweets get lost when there are 35,000 of mine floating out there.

The thinking I’ve been doing about the Packers has led me to an idea: random thoughts about the Packers. A weekly listing of some of the things I’ve thought about during the course of the week. Some may be serious things the team should consider, while others may be crazy thoughts only I would do if left in charge of the team. Everything in between is fair game for conversation.

With that said, here is the inaugural edition of Random Thoughts:

-Too much thought is being given to who the Packers will play in the Divisional Round. Regardless of who they wind up playing, the opposing team is walking into Lambeau Field, with the prospect of playing the best team in the league. Whether it is the Falcons, Lions, or Giants, they will be entering as significant underdogs. It makes no difference which one it is-they will be going home as losers. Personally think the Lions are coming back to Green Bay, but that’s my opinion

-If the Packers were not 15-1, would Dom Capers face getting fired at the end of the season? His defense has fallen from 5th overall last season to 32nd this season with essentially all of the same players that were there last season.

-Along the same lines, I wonder if Dom Capers will be strolling into Ted Thompson’s office after the season with a wish list of players and positions that need help this off season. Hopefully outside linebacker, cornerback, and safety are at the top of Dom’s list.

-I wonder at what point Aaron Rodgers will be strolling into Ted’s office with his agent saying, “So, about that new contract…”

-I wonder if Ryan Grant has out priced the money the Packers were willing to offer him this off season, based on his play the last few weeks. He has looked more and more like the 2007 version of him with each passing week. All this while James Starks has carried the ball 17 times since Thanksgiving. Will be interesting to see how the Packers approach Grant this off season.

-I wonder how many times Ted Thompson has muttered to himself, “Thank goodness we got him when we did” when talking about the contract extension Jordy Nelson signed in October.

-I wonder if Shawn Slocum purchased three lucky rabbits feet before the season started and named them Tim, Randall, and Mason. He should have-they will have allowed him to keep his job another season.

-With Joe Philbin interviewing for the Chiefs Head Coaching job and Tom Clements for Penn State head coach, are we seeing the beginnings of the Mike McCarthy coaching tree? Would be quite a turn of events, considering how many were calling for his termination just a few years ago.

I will be curious to hear your opinions on these topics. Look for a new edition of Random Thoughts next week.

“considering how many were calling for his termination just a few years ago.”. I thought it was closer to 13 months ago ;)

Do we really need another safety? Obviously Nick Collins may or may not comeback but assuming he does, using the 15-1 argument as opposed to the 32nd D one, I would say that Peprah has been serviceable. The more I see of Jarrett Bush, the more I see him as a backup safety rather than a corner.

I agree about ROLB and another DT or two would be nice, at least one of them being a significant step up…

The health of Collins is going to affect many decisions this off season. If he is able to come back and play at the level he was at, focus to other positions (OLB/DLine for example) can be addressed early in the draft. If not, a S may be needed early, with other positions falling into later rounds.

and re: Jarrett Bush-he still cant play in the secondary. I cringe every time he takes the field on defense

Yes, I’m thinking D-line, too (and O-line, given Sherrod’s horrible injury).

We seem to be carrying one too few safeties and depth at DB is always desirable, but pass rush and run defense are top issues.

Actually, thinking about it, that covers pretty much the entire D … ;-)

    But 15-1 baby!!!

The upcoming draft is going to be defense heavy one would have to think.

Woodson getting older, limited depth on the dline, questions at ILB (Hawk vs Smith), nobody opposite Matthews, depth at CB, and S concerns.

Yep, that covers the issues on defense.
