Quinn Johnson: Unleashed

I submit into evidence: Quinn Johnson Unleashed

Apparently, Jersey Al and Aaron Nagler think its uber cool to break down video footage. Contrary to popular belief, here at the Lounge we can do that stuff too.

That as it is, ever since Greg Bedard mentioned that Quinn Johnson might be the odd man out come cut time, I made sure to pay special attention to Johnson's play on the field at Cleveland.

Contrary to what you might see in practice, Johnson's play on the field was nothing short of solid against the Browns. I watched every single play Johnson made, and I just don't see the lack of fire everyone is talking about.

I submit into evidence: Quinn Johnson Unleashed.

Make sure and hit HD mode.

(with minute marks underneath for your viewing pleasure)

0:06 The Packers actually score with a run on the goal line. Johnson owns his man. Love Dietrich-Smith elbowing his dude. Note Lumpkin doing the stupid salute in the endzone..

0:16 Johnson prevents a possible TFL or safety by leveling the linebacker.

0:22 Johnson pushes the line 3-4 yards. Two plays, and out of the shadow of the endzone.

0:29 Solid on the pass protection.

0:32 Bring in a veteran.

0:36 Total and complete domination.

0:48 I don't know who #43 is, but Charles Dillon made him look like a little girl.

0:52 Johnson moves his man completely out of the picture. You also see some of the burst that Quinn Porter has to offer.

1:03 Has anyone figured out what the hell Porter is doing here with that celebration? I'm calling it "The Cereal."

1:06 Same play, but note the nice job by Dietrich-Smith getting to the second level.

1:17 He got, "jacked up."

1:23 I may have saved my career. Or, I'm totally psycho.

1:34 One more time for good measure. Ouch.

After watching all of the film, I just can't see the Packers parting way this kind of truck stick player. He may still be one-dimensional, but far too many times we have seen the Packers unable to convert running plays in short yardage situations.

Quinn Johnson solves that problem.

AMEN!!!
"Quinn Johnson solves that problem."

But those are plays against the 2nd and 3rd stringers, though.

That being said, last year it was very noticeable that with Johnson on the field, Grant got much more yardage.

Want someone to catch? Put a TE in there. Want someone to run? Put a big RB.

The Mighty Quinn is back. I was impressed. The problem for him is that Korey Hall and John Kuhn also had some good moments in that game, and they did it with the #1s. I'd like to see Quinn take some snaps with the #1s in this week's game so he'll have a chance to prove himself with the big boys.

If I had to pick which one of the three is the odd man out, I would still go with Quinn, but it's mighty close.

I love this guy, hits like a ton of bricks and makes holes for the RB. I really hope he makes the team or someone will pick him off the practice squad.

Finally! The Quinn Johnson we all expected when he was drafted LY. Granted, it was against 2nd and 3rd stringers, but he was blowing up the defenders. I remember hearing that he had been quiet in camp, and needed to do something to stand out vs Hall and Kuhn. Mission accomplished Saturday night.

Yes, but they seem to be lagging behind in the techno music and sound FX department. Yet, the awesome manipulative power of them both leads me to believe Johnson too is awesome. The slow-mo of him looking at the camera is hilarious.

With the depth at fullback (Kuhn and Hall), maybe it's time to do a Spencer Havner on Quinn Johnson and move him to middle linebacker? He played there his first year at LSU before getting switched to fullback. I'd love to see that kind of intensity and hitting on the defensive side of the football.

Can we redo the Extra Point from last week on Quinn Johnson? I think I'd be with the majority now... :D

Kudos for putting together a nice highlight tape on Quinn, Alex.

You present a nice case for Mr.Johnson. May I be devil's advocate for a moment?

We normally dedicate five roster slots for FB/TE. Last year was an exception in that we tied up six. That was strictly for Quinn Johnson. If we had only kept five last year, Johnson would have been the odd man out. I don't believe Quinn gets that mulligan this year. Mainly due to our sudden wealth at TE.

Quinn's problem isn't hitting someone. He is a HAMMER. Quinn's shortcoming last year was that he often didn't see the cut lanes like you need from your FB in the ZBS.

You have to love the results, when he sees the crease and gets there, but he has to do that far more consistently.

If QJ is to make the roster this year, he has to demonstrate a better grasp of the zone blocking system... see the lanes... and be decisive when he does.

Hall was a LB in college and therefore was accustomed to seeing holes opening and running to them. Kuhn was a feature back and sees the holes well too.

One other drawback for Quinn. He was thrown to four times last year. Two catches... two drops.

We ran more power/gap last year than any time during McCarthy's tenure, but the ZBS is still our primary run game.

Am I the only one who noticed that there was only one zone run on the entire highlight package?

Could it be that the groundwork for a trade is being laid? Not sayin'... just sayin'.

Take it however you want, but I see QJ as the guy who has to make a pretty large jump to be on the roster opening day.

FWIW - I just wanted to bring it to your attention the same thing Pat Weber mentioned in a comment above - Quinn Johnson was a LB at LSU before he made the transition to FB.

I fully understand why LSU moved him to FB. They told him where the hole would be in their running attack.

We were lining up TE's on some run plays last year because they could see it better than QJ.

I'm not saying that he can't. I'm saying that he hasn't shown it thus far.

As I mentioned earlier, the runs in that highlight package are all power/gap stuff that we use MAYBE 30% of our running plays. One inside zone run (albeit a nice one) out of all the plays... what does that say to you?

Well... If you are getting more Yds/carry in the power set when QJ is in the game (pretty sure that's the case) - It tells me that maybe the ZBS isn't quite cut out for this offense. ;)

justjeff -

FWIW - I think his learning curve would be more forgivable if he showed a little more prowess at catching the ball out of the backfield.

I think that limits him in the coaches' minds more than anything else.

QJ looks a lot like Predator in the slow-mo clip.
My LSU fan/friend/sports writer says QJ is the shit and RG will be better because we have him. Guy just seems like he'll take a little longer to fully develop, Les Miles is not the best coach on earth... once he's ready, he'll be unstoppable.

I watched Johnson also. His block on Porter's 15 yard run was devastating. I would keep Johnson and part with Hall I were TT. Johnson has a skill in short yardage that no other Packers possess.

If he can flip a repeat performance next week- especially if he can repeat with the 1's or 2's- I may start to think Quinn has a chance.

Last season, he really didn't show the power he was drafted for, and he needs to learn to acquire targets in space. His vision is suspect.

But this reel makes him look like the dominant blocking force he is supposed to develop into. This dude is just standing cats up left and right. Righteous.

And, yeah, I said that.

I was wondering who made this video. Nice work Packers Lounge! Game on now!

Is it really possible GB keeps 3 FBs again this year? That video made me think it's going to happen. The grin at the end was the best. He looked like he was insane with all the fun he was having.
