One Can Dream Right?

One Can Dream Right?

That was the subject line of an email I received from my father today. The following text comprised the remainder of the message (via profootballtalk):

"(Adam) Schefter reports that the Raiders would even be willing to trade cornerback, Nnamdi Asomugha, who's widely regarded as the best player on their roster. However, Asomugha's contract (which includes an $8 million roster bonus due on the first day of the league year, a $7.83 million option bonus due on March 19 and language that makes it difficult to franchise him when he becomes a free agent after the 2011 season) makes it very unlikely any team would trade for him."

The "dream" my father is referring to is teaming up the Defensive Player of the Year, Charles Woodson, and Nnamdi Asomugha in the Packers' defense next year.

I have to admit the idea is intriguing.  Opposing quarterbacks don't often find success when they throw in Woodson's direction.  By putting Asomugha at the other corner, you could effectively shutdown the top two receivers of every team the Packers face.

This train of thought doesn't last long, however.  The Packers' General Manager is Ted Thompson. For better or worse, the Packers are married to this man, his philosophy and all.  If Thompson is famous for anything, it is his lack of action rather than his action in free agency and trades.

We can all dream, but this really has no legs.  Don't get me wrong, I would love to see it, but Ted Thompson isn't going to give up the necessary compensation to acquire a player of Asomugha's stature. Unless he's available for a 2nd round draft choice, I don't see Ted pulling the trigger on this one.

I'm sure Thompson will collect his fair share of criticism for this and many other non-acquisitions this offseason. The list of free agent signings and trades that other teams make will be long, and I'm afraid the Packers signings will barely make that list.  But let's face it, it's a good thing those faithful to the Pack don't make personnel decisions.  If this were the case, Aaron Rodgers would still be on the bench (or playing elsewhere), and Favre would still be breaking our hearts.

Thompson is not a particularly exciting man, but he has built a contender.  Let's hold off any judgment and let the man do what he does best, evaluate talent and build a team his own way.

Why even right about it if it has no legs??? I dont see the point. There is no way he comes here. Its like saying yea we COULD trade for Mario Williams but it wont happen. Should i start writing false reports about all players and WHAT IF they landed in GB?? If you want you can sign me up, my first article would be WHAT IF the Packers traded for the number one pick!!

I would love to have you come here and "right" about stuff. "Our" you interested? "Kneed" an application? I certainly "wood" be willing to send you "won."

Gimme a break man, if you have anything better to write about I would like to hear it. I would say this place has more non-traditional work than anywhere on the planet. In simple English that translates to "suck it."

Obviously this is your first off-season.

My first hater. *sniff* I feel as though I've finally made it.

By the way, why does the "A" stand for in the name, Big A? I have a good guess, but I would like to hear it straight from the horse's ass...I mean mouth.

Wow... So much hate everywhere...

Anyway, a much more concrete possibility, and as good as, is Richard Seymour. That is my dream acquisition. We severely lacked interior pass rush. Raji should be able to provide it, with a year and a full offseason under his belt. But Seymour is wildly regarded as the best 3-4 DE of all time, and will be only 31.

Seymour + Packers = SB XLV.

I know, they'll PROBABLY tag him. But a man can dream.

Tagged him.

The Packers will finish 4th in the divison! Screw you, Tom Thedson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Woodson and Asomugha..... Definately the stuff of dreams, but we can all dream.

Jarrett Bush informed me that he removed you from his twitter.

He would tell you himself, but he hates getting burned.

Keep writing about the long shots, it's fun to think of the possibilities. Nice job Max.

Fitz, so many people have taken shots at JJ throughout the years, but this is the best-phrased attack I have seen yet.

I'm sure Oakland is going for a first rounder, but they've made bad trades before. Definitely possible to get this guy for a 2nd rounder.

This has got to be the worst Packers related (and I use that term loosely) website I have ever visited. Try actually commenting on Packers news! You know, tagging Ryan Pickett, not tendering Deshawn Wynn, actual news! Why would anyone be interested in the mindless ramblings of this idiot!!?? Get off the internet you fool!!!!

Max's picture

Another loyal reader. Thanks for your comment!

Alex's picture

Sorry you feel that way. Why don't you just use Twitter like everyone else?

FITZCORE1252's picture

Agrafes,

Maybe because people 'round here knew that Picket was gonna get franchised a week ago. Maybe people 'round here realize Wynn has ended 2 of the last 3 years on IR and not tendering him comes as no surprise.

So I guess for a novice that stuff could be considered news, but to most on this site... it's old news.

Max (and anyone else who has a take),

While we're dreaming. What are your thoughts on Darren Sproles?

The Bolts are gonna let him test the FA waters, I think he would be a great change of pace back, he's also a PROVEN commodity in the return game. Not to mention, HE'S SEASONED. Wouldn't have to worry about developing him like we might if we went after a Best or Spiller, could plug that lil SOB right in...

Thoughts?

Somebody is going to make Darren Sproles a very rich man. Unfortunately, I don't think it will be the Packers.

JJ, You've got to stop coming up with new screennames all the time. You'll lose track of them.

I get a cold chill running straight down my spine when I think of the possible outcomes of an O-line without both Chad & Mark, Seriously, that's a scary thought. - http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/85609507.html

Sproles in GB would be awesome, but unlikely. I think we should keep Ahman, he definitely pushed Grant to push himself more. My dream free-agent catch has been, for three years now, Julius Peppers. Then we switched to 3-4 and I'm not sure I really want the guy as he has always been a 4-3 end. I just want one sexy pick-up whether its in the draft or free-agency. Something to get excited about. Thompson does great in the draft, obviously, but with the exception of A-Rod falling to us, none of it has been overly sexy until its retrospectively sexy.

Good writing, Max. Though Nnamdi wants to play for the Jets. Anyway, here's hoping something falls our way this off-season.
