Nelson vs. Jones: Tale of the Tape

The great debate over the third wideout continues to rage this season

The great debate over the third wideout continues to rage this season. After an impressive performance in training camp and on family night, Jordy Nelson seemed to have the inside edge. However, in the first real (sorta) game of the season, perhaps the tables have turned.

Both players did their part on special teams, and both took snaps with the first string offense, although James Jones got that majority. Both Jones and Nelson each had a drop, while Jones out caught Nelson for the game. Will the depth chart change come next game? Or, will we see an even number of snaps for both players?

Let's turn to the film. Hit HD 720 for the best experience.

Week One: Jordy Nelson vs. James Jones

0:15 Nice special teams stop by Jordy. Bush with an asssist. Wow.

0:21 Flynn with a dart to Jordy on a nice route.

0:37 Jordy drops one you can't drop. I don't care about the flag. He has to make that catch. Maybe he was distracted by the beach ball.

1:12 Nice throw. Nice catch. Nice play by Jones.

1:33 Jones drops a Rodgers' pass.

1:44 Now THAT should have been a flag. Notice how Jones stays cool about it. Professional.

1:54 Another nice grab by Jones. Nice throw by Flynn too.

1:59 Flynn hangs in there for a big gain to Jones.

2:15 Again, kudos to Flynn. That had to hurt.

Although Jones wasn't spectacular, he definitely has to be at least neck-and-neck with Jordy at this point. We will see what next week brings, but for now, I think it's a dead heat.

Kareem Copeland said today that he thinks Jones has gotten the edge over Nelson this past week. I've always leaned a little more toward Jones myself anyway. But the most important thing is that they're both playing well, so I'm happy.

I wouldn't call that a drop by Jones against the Browns, by the way. The defender got a hand in there to break up the play. I agree, though, that Nelson should've caught the pass in the end zone, even though he was bumped. You could see afterwards that he was angry with himself for failing to hold onto it.

Jordy wont be dropping many balls like that this year. No worries.

Great analysis, Alex. Completely unbiased.

Jones is capable of being more physical, but Nelson is the fastest among all recievers to get back to the QB when Rodgers breaks from the pocket (I mean that, his ability to work back to Rodgers is better than Driver and Jennings). Not just this year, but at least the last 18 months. It shows too. Look back at who's working the comeback route and how frequently Rodgers knows he's there. Just saying, Rodgers and Nelson have a connection.

No disrespect to Jones, he's solid.

#3 wideout is irrelevant in this offense. They will both be targeted their fair share. If the offseason is any indication, I think Jordy will have better #'s. He and Aaron seem to have built a noticeable chemistry. I do like me some JJ though.
