The problem isn't that he signed Johnson, it's the contract he gave him. Completely irresponsible and it was an albatross around the neck of the franchise for years. It's relavant because it is exactly the kind of contract Thompson would ever sign off on (thank God)

I truly think that Ted is too confident in himself to ever look over his shoulder. I simply think he has a plan and he's sticking to it.....he ousted Favre....I don't think this guy is too worried about public opinion.

I really didn't want to take this back to last year, or the year before, or yeah. Never. We have plenty of room for anyone who deserves a payday.

I am looking at four years of Ted and three years of Sherman. I find it hard to fathom that there wasn't a free-agent worth the money in that span.

My argument is simple. Since Joe, everyone has been looking over their shoulder. It's really not necessary.

Okay, so maybe I am not saying it invalidates the argument, but rather weakens it slightly. Bad luck is just bad luck. I don't think that makes it disastrous.

On the flip side, even though I despise the fact that Justin Harrell has started less games than Joe Johnson, I don't blame Ted for the pick. It was a bold bold move and it didn't pan out. I just don't think bad luck has any place in the argument. It's what you did with the end result that should be the determining factor.

In Sherman's case, the result wasn't stunning. For Ted, I agree with you, accountability often hits you before you see it coming.

What is the bottom line here? Ted, and everyone else, is afraid of the ghost of Joe.

I don't agree with this at all. I just don't think Thompson felt there was a player out there worthy of spending big money on. If he felt he could get somebody who was going to make a big impact, I feel like he would have done it.

Don't overlook the fact that we have players on the roster that need contract extensions, gotta think about having room for them as well.

Sherman was not that bad a GM, and he was not that good a GM, either. He was average. His record was actually well above average, but he inherited a pretty good roster, failed to advance beyond the second round of the playoffs, and toward the end of his tenure he was reaching a point of diminishing returns.

I agree that the Joe Johnson thing was mostly just bad luck, but I don't think mentioning him invalidates anyone's anti-Sherman argument. There were plenty of other questionable decisions. Plus, there is always the "buck stops here" factor. If someone is in charge of an organization for long enough, they are going to be held accountable for everything that happens under their watch. It's not entirely fair, but the thinking is that in the end, you make your own luck. Thompson will meet the same fate if he doesn't produce some big-time results in the next year or two.

That's not my argument at all. Woodson was a deal, and in retrospect it was a good risk.

Joe Johnson was not nearly the risk. He was a proven player, coming off two pro-bowls in three years. He also was coming of a comeback player of the year award.

How can you not mention Woodson in this talk though? Especially in the context of injury ending Johnson's productivity? Woodson was a well known injury risk (some say he faked it, doesn't matter), this is exactly the type of situation that you're talking about. You accuse Thompson of being afraid to pull the trigger because of Johnson's ghost and then say that the counter argument is invalid just cause? No way, Woodson showed that when Thompson can get the deal he wants with a good guy, he'll completely overlook the "ghost of Johnson" and go for it; not worried about bringing a high quality, but injury risk, player into the fold.
