I’d Rather Stay Home

For the most part, I would rather watch a Packer game at home.

A lot of attention has been given to the rather large drop in attendance at Family Night this year. On the surface, after two straight weather disasters (both by mother nature and the Packers) it would stand to reason I suppose. But, (and I can hear the rants already) nowadays, quite honestly, I would rather stay home.

Shocking you say? How dare I even suggest that going to Lambeau is sometimes far less superior than the comfort of my HD television? The sad truth of the matter is, home is now trumping the stadium.

Take last night for instance. When I woke up in the morning I decided not to take any chances. I drove into Wisconsin and hit my buddy's house to ensure viewing on a large television. By the time game time came around, I hardly had a need to be there.

Thank god for Twitter and LIVE blogging, because the pre-game of Family Night pretty much sucks. The only thing remotely interesting was the trampoline show, which every single station seemed to miss for the most part. After that, it was a barrage of commercials, introductions, and for the most part poor commentary. Let me be CLEAR here. This is not the stations fault, it is the Packers entertainment people. From the crappy jock-jams music of 1989, to 25 minutes of the Oneida Nation dancing in circles, and of course eight million introductions, the whole thing was completely unwatchable.

I get that it's for the fans and all, but judging by the aforementioned attendance drop, the fans aren't really digging it either.

I see this trend continuing as we move forward too. And many fans feel the same way:

I agree. I'd actually rather watch an NFL game on TV than go in person in a lot of ways.

It's great to hit Lambeau a couple of times a year. There is nothing like the atmosphere. But in truth, the view isn't always great, the food is expensive, and generally something ends up being a royal pain in the ass. However, if the Packers don't sit down and seriously figure out how to re-vamp their entertainment both pre-game and post-game, they are going to suffer more than they need to.

I can name ten people without even thinking that could do a better job than the Packers are doing. You see them around the blogosphere everyday. What you don't see are the Packers, and their illiteracy was obvious at the shareholders meeting when Mark Murphy talked about their social media efforts and came off sounding dumber than a box of rocks.

The Packers entertainment department needs to wake up and smell the now.

Bumping Two Unlimited all night just makes you look stupid.

I have been saying this for years. I go for the football and I think there is no experience on Earth like lambeau Field but the Packers treat this with Arrogance.

The fans are gonna show up anyway so why should the stadium experience be amazing?

Thats how they think and kind of how uits been since I started going to games when I was 7

I'm curious what you guys think about the supposed expansion of the south endzone stands and how it will make the stadium louder, as Murphy I believe explained it. Is there any truth to this "loud" factor or is it simply an avenue of revenue?

I really think the blandness of entertainment and the 1993 gameday soundtract being used goes as far hindering the homefield advantage for the players and the team as a whole. It pisses me off that the stadium isn't louder than it is, and above all, the Packers don't do shit to persuade more enthusiasm, and more noise. I'm done blaming this on the fans because I think the crowds are getting younger and are enthusiastic. Somthing needs to be done.

Like you mentioned last night Alex, it can be done without losing the family slant or whatever you want to call it. Hell, when NE plays "Elevation" at Gillette that place goes nuts. It's somthing.

completely agree. i always used the excuse of lambeau being in small town green bay wisconsin - and just maybe being a little bit behind the times. but...the packers have the kind of clout to bring in someone who can make the updates and make the entertainment relevant. we need something like the Steelers "Renegade" - Heinz Field goes absolutely crazy when they play that shiz. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irWFrU7LjWw - the packers are a world class organization but the entertainment feels a little high school-ish.

We go to away games every year and are amazed at the lollapalooza every other stadium puts on for their team. Then I attended a game in Lambeau thinking how even more awesome it would be being on home turf...but there was very little fanfare or celebration for our team. I was very disappointed with the whole Lambeau experience. The seats were hard and it was difficult to maintain space next to very large adults. (I am only 5'3). I understand the whole traditional football thing, but why can't we have some hype and celebration with it?

"I can name ten people without even thinking that could do a better job than the Packers are doing. You see them around the blogosphere everyday."

I disagree, but I definitely think the organization should value the input of the blogsphere to a reasonable extent.

I've seen similar productions with the eagles and bears and I'm not sure what else could have been done.

I definitely agree that music selection could be better. The friendly tail-gate atmosphere of the stadium and neighborhood already mirrors that of college football. Almost every stadium in the Big Ten utilizes music extremely well to raise crowd moral. Not saying play jump-around or zombie nation because it will never be the same. Find a niche for Lambeau.

"But in truth, the view isn’t always great"

Comparatively, there isn't a bad seat in the house. The only problem I find is when people stand-up...which is almost never a problem (too many old ladies yelling at them!).

But now that we're on the subject, The g-force song will never catch on. No one will learn it or get jacked up when it plays. Why did they need to create another entity to cheer for? Makes no sense to me. It needs to be more implicit

Perfect mix is to get to one or two games a year, anything over that becomes a hassle. That's what Sunday ticket, big-screens and Lazy-boys are for! Woot.

Alex,

First, Lambeau is always at the top of the stadium experience rankings and the waiting list for season tickets is 30 years long. If you don't want to go, there are plenty of others who do.

Quit acting like a fag, Alex. "Thank god for Twitter and LIVE blogging". You sound like a sassy teenage chick.

Just because the waiting list is long doesn't mean anything. The stadium experience sucks, period. The only cool thing is the other fans. The entertainment, the technology, and the G-Force all are currently epic fails.

Thank god for LIVE blogging. At least it was entertaining.

Here's something for you to watch, since you obviously are into that kind of thing.

Alex, I kinda don't agree. The family night two years ago was great, especially the fireworks. It was great to be in the stadium.

The only thing that was bad was handling bad weather that night as well. My 78 y/o mother had to walk up and down stadium ramps because they could not accommodate people waiting to get in.

BTW, I love the new practice stands. Really nice experience. But with people complaining about getting seating even after coming in late, I fully expect to have paid seats for that as well.

I agree being in the stadium is cool. But, there are many places that are far more exciting before and after the actual game (in the stadium). Tailgating aside of course.

I just think the Packers need to continue to be special, and they aren't doing that.

I've only been to three other NFL stadiums and the experience wasn't any better. Like I said earlier, you're going to have to look to college stadiums for better "entertainment".

You also end up missing out on a lot. I'm looking forward to utilizing Twitter a lot this year while at MOAF, because otherwise you don't know a lot of what's happening. Sports in general, but football especially, have a bizarre "you saw it in person, yet know about 3% of the goings on compared to anyone else."

The games are fun, but factoring the before and after getting there/home, and the fact that the NFL seems to be headed for a 3 minute commercial break every 9 seconds of play, (where you have more flexibility at home) and it's certainly a defensible position that the TV experience is better.

It's also a position held by many.

As an aside: while the Packers/Lambeau are certainly popular, you guys to realize that the whole waiting list thing is basically crap, yes? Other teams have impressive lists, and they charge to be on it. I can only imagine how many people are on the Packer's list 18 times, or are unaware they're on it because a relative signed up 64 people.

Haha! So funny! I think they must have some people way behind the times doing this music. Or they just don't have the time or money to make deals with newer musicians. Great music for Gen-X's (but I'm 24). I like the music but not during football games, it makes the organization seem like small-town nerds, really. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who had these thoughts. I wonder what the players think.

I noticed that the preseason games are scheduled to appear on channel 5 in Green Bay, but I have not found any Milwaukee market channels that are carrying the 8/15 game. Are they airing the preseason games in the Milwaukee market? I have been searching around, but haven't found anything.

Also, tonight the NFL network is air an "Intrasqaud Scrimmage" of the Packers from 7-9 central.

Alex, do you actually believe "the stadium experience sucks, period"?

Is it not enjoyable watching a top-tier team in a stadium that housed the Ice Bowl and legends like Bart Star, Paul Hornung and Don Hutson?

Are you a Packer fan or more of a fan of blogging and bitching?

I believe the fans, the tailgating, and the camaraderie are awesome. Outside of that, the replays suck, the jumbo sucks, the music sucks, the pre-game and post game suck. The legend thing has worn off for me. As the fan base ages, it will for them too. I'm sick of going to Lambeau and feeling like hick instead of a Packers fan. It's cheesy and makes everyone is Wisconsin look stupid.

I admit I've only been to four NFL games - two at Lambeau, one at the Humpty Dump (back when BLF wasn't on the wrong side of the stadium) and one in Seattle (vs. Jax) when they were at UW while Qwest Field was being built (that sucked - no beer). But I love Lambeau. I just do, especially after the remodel. I agree, there are things they could do better. But they have a great place to start improving in. It will be interesting to go to Seattle in two weeks and see what the difference is between it and Lambeau in 12/07 (last game attended).

Qwest is really nice. Great views of the Sound and Seattle. Fans are weak though, this will be my third game there, we take that bitch over! By the end of the game the stands will be thinned out and all you'll see is green and gold accompanied with a strong "GO PACK GO". Seriously, it's almost sad, but not really.

I've never attended a game at Lambeau but I will say they probably need to have a new (and really nice) sound system and bring in a new D.J. or something (the music I hear is all '87-'94 Jock Jams and I find that so lame. Song's like that are cool when they're intended to be a retro-throwbacks not when they're the only things playing. And they need two big nice HD screens with good camera crews working them. And perhaps start phasing out the Rail-benchs somewhat. The Organization has some problems, but they are truly just a business and if the fans keep paying them they won't really change much. I attended an Oregon Duck game in Eugene last year and it was freaking LOUD!!!! I mean loud rock concert loud. couldn't hear myself talk. If they could encourage more noise from the crowd that would really help home-field advantage, but no vuvuzelas.

Well I hear what a lot of youguys are saying-about hype & entertainment. Thing is, the Lambeau experience so far outclasses any other NFL stadium I've been to that I just don't miss anything of what youguys are whining about. Might be nice to have a better theme song, and it wouldn't be hard for the organization to put in motion a few new cheers. But I'd much rather have the constant roar of the crowd on every damn play, and the onslaught of clever one-liner jeers launching from the crowd around me than music, bigscreen replays, and the more frequent commentator remarks you find at other stadiums. IMO Lambeau doesn't need a damn thing. The overall spirit/experience of the crowd wouldn't change a bit with the addition of Mickey Mouse cheers and Hip-Hop-or-whatever-shit blasting from a big new soundsystem. For me that stuff is a turn-off, even a distraction when I go to other stadiums. Much classier/enjoyable the Lambeau way. Youguys stay home then, I'll go to Lambeau. BTW, the avatar's my Dad(great pic), I'm 42-so I'm not an old fucker.

I'll take the stadium over TV any day. You get all the replays on the jumbo tron in case you missed something. The spirit of the crowd is way better than anything you'll get in your living room. I don't want some retarded announcer trying to turn me into a cheer leader. There's absolutley no way they could play music everyone likes. If there was a vote most of the crowd would want country. That would make me totally sick to the point of giving up my tix.I was lucky enough to score season tickets about 8 years ago and try to make it to every game I can. Damn right I have the green package. I hate the benches so I invested in stadium seats. For you non-season ticket holders, you can rent stadium seats for $5.
Some people like church on Sunday, I prefer the green and gold at Lambeau.ahhhhhh mennnnnn.

SpiderPack is spot on. I go to Lambeau to sit my bony ass on a metal bench and watch my favorite team play football on grass outside. If you are worried about other people thinking you're a "hick" than follow the Cowboys or the the Vikings. The last time I went to the Metrodome I thought my head was gonna explode. I've been to LP field in Nashville and they are appealing to the "hick" mentality by satisfying the people who don't understand football and blasting bullshit between every play. I suppose Alex wants to update the uniforms too? Yeah I've grown weary of the Rolling Stones and John Mellencamp, and the male cheerleaders with giant G flags, but c'mon. eat a brat, drink some beers and have fun. Go Pack! BTW I'm 39 not an old fuck*r either.

They play the G-Force song at Lambeau? That's too bad.
Aside, how great would it be cranking out some Divinyls (thank you Alex, Jersey Al) over the PA when Minnesota visits? "He doesn't look bothered to me at all, Troy. Amazing." "No, this guy's been around awhile and can obviously stand up under any kind of pressure."
Off topic, pardon.
