Quick Hits: Pre-Season Browns

Finally, a football game that means something nothing. But, at least there were different colored uniforms on the field.

Here are your quick hits.

Packers 24 Browns 27

Watch Aaron Rodgers highlights HERE.

Watch game highlights HERE.

First Half

Love when the game starts by giving up two 17 yard receptions. Nice.

Morgan Burnett made a nice play at the line. Love it. Outside of that, I still need to see more.

I get so sick of watching base in the pre-season.

It took only 6 minutes for the haters to come back. It’s definitely football season.

Wow, one play by the first string offense before a turnover. Just wow.

As of the first quarter, B.J. Raji was getting owned.

I am on the Donald Lee bandwagon.

Greg Jennings rules.

Dude, Aaron Rodgers almost pitched a perfect game. Or, at least a perfect 16 minutes.

The fans in the crowd on the Jennings leap were priceless. Memories were made right there.

Let’s hope that Ryan Grant is not severely injured.

Seriously, why do you refuse to hand the ball off to Jackson? Because he isn’t as good as you keep telling us? Brandon Jackson sucks.

Poppinga didn’t look bad.

Finley is an extreme beast. If he ever mans up and blocks down field after the catch, he will dominate.

Nice kick by Bryan, boomer of a leg.

I don’t think Sam Shields is going to make the team.

Justin Harrell almost looked studly.

Mike Neal played well too.

Matt Flynn does nothing.

The new hats suck.

Second Half

Quinn “Pom Pons” Porter was a cheerleader? Wow.

James Jones showing why he is the real number three.

Sorry, but Nelson dropped that touchdown, flag or not.

I am slowly starting to jump on the “Slocum has to go” bandwagon.

It is apparent we are much deeper on defense.

Justin Harrell continues to impress.

Donald Driver: “When game time calls, I’m ready to play.”

Advantage Byran.

The decision at fullback is going to be tough. Quinn Johnson can blow up a hole.

You can call the third quarter the Kregg Lumpkin show. It got poor ratings from me.

We need serious help on punt returns. If Will doesn’t get in there, we are in trouble.

The special teams were beyond god-awful. That’s my new beef. Get used to it.

Shut up about how filling Jolly’s shoes is so hard to do. Please.

As usual, Jarrett Bush should not be on the field for real plays.

Aaron Rodgers… air guitar hero.

Overall, I think the Browns came out a little more ready to play than the Packers expected. Quite simply, it’s something that we have to stop doing and stop doing now. All the pieces are in place. Now you bring the spirit and the mental adjustments.

The 2010 Packers can only beat themselves. Period.

The apparel in Green Bay always sucks…’cept for those hunting hats last year…they need to hire some real designers and stop showing loyalty to local shmucks.

        Bogman,

Every year I go to lambeau with a bunch of my friends I grew up with, and every year we all hit the pro shop.

Every year they complain there wasn’t much to choose from, and then I break out the stuff I purchased. And then all I hear is “Where did you find that? You found a ton of really nice stuff! All I found was this lousy T-shirt/sweatshirt, etc…”

The truth of the matter is, there is a lot of very, very nice Packers gear available, if you’re willing to pay for it. Nice polos and golf shirts, pullovers, sweaters, and windbreakers/inclimate weather gear.

I’m always finding top-notch team gear. And I’m always spending more than I’d like to admit. But I justify it, every year, by saying to myself, “I’m not spending money on clothing, I’m making a donation to my favorite publicly owned, not-for-profit sports team.”

Yeah Oppy, I spend a ridonculous amount of $$$ on Packers gear. I look at it the same way, doing my part to keep the franchise thriving. The Jersey store always has a huge selection of hats, I always go there pregame.

The offense looked good. However with the way our defense and special teams played, I’m surprised you didn’t do one of your “suck lists” Alex.

So, in essence, they had a terrible, terrible ST coach, and they “replaced” him (he retired) with his aprentice? And why exactly that didn’t work out?

It’s just preseason, though (yes, everytime something doesn’t go well, I’ll repeat this phrase).

Bulaga was solid. I thought he outperformed Colledge.

I was also surprised by Harrell. I’de like to see him more with the first team.

Flynn should have been able to do more with his protection. He had all day to throw. I would have liked to see him with the number ones though. He’ll definitely get his shot.

Not worried about the secondary or the pass rush as many players were out and there wasn’t much effort scheme-wise. Can’t say the same about Special Teams, though they were trying out players.

Cleveland’s second TD should have been called back as Poppinga was blatantly held. Kudos to him.

I haven’t compared all the stats on the punters, but Bryan’s hangtime was impressive and he seemed to have an edge.

I’de like to see Quinn Johnson with the number ones and also get passed to.

“It took only 6 minutes for the haters to come back. It’s definitely football season.”

I’ve heard two other people say the same thing. But, the 60 or so packer fans I follow on twitter didn’t seem to have that problem. Maybe it was the CheeseheadTV Live feed or the forums. Truth is I haven’t seen criticism from fans that is much different than yours and the two other people who said the same thing.

  10. John Rehor says:

If Quinn Johnson could blow up holes against first teamers the way he did against second and third stringers, he’d be a lock to make the team. He was destroying defenders as first through the hole.

And the stick he laid out on special teams was impressive. Still think Hall and Kuhn have the upper hand but he may have closed the gap a little last night.

  11. Greg C. says:

I do think that filling Johnny Jolly’s shoes is going to be hard, and that opinion didn’t change after the Browns game. The first string defense got very little pass rush. Pickett’s a nose tackle playing DE. I don’t see how he’s going to get much of a pass rush. Harrell held his own against the second and third string of the Browns, but he looks more like a 4-3 DT than a 3-4 DE. Mike Neal looked good, and I’m hoping he can work his way into the rotation, hopefully as the first DE off the bench.

I think opposing teams are going to go heavy on the pass. The Packers need to find a way to stop them.
