Is it really possible GB keeps 3 FBs again this year? That video made me think it’s going to happen. The grin at the end was the best. He looked like he was insane with all the fun he was having.

Last season, he really didn’t show the power he was drafted for, and he needs to learn to acquire targets in space. His vision is suspect.

But this reel makes him look like the dominant blocking force he is supposed to develop into. This dude is just standing cats up left and right. Righteous.

And, yeah, I said that.

FWIW – I think his learning curve would be more forgivable if he showed a little more prowess at catching the ball out of the backfield.

I think that limits him in the coaches’ minds more than anything else.

Well… If you are getting more Yds/carry in the power set when QJ is in the game (pretty sure that’s the case) – It tells me that maybe the ZBS isn’t quite cut out for this offense.

We were lining up TE’s on some run plays last year because they could see it better than QJ.

I’m not saying that he can’t. I’m saying that he hasn’t shown it thus far.

As I mentioned earlier, the runs in that highlight package are all power/gap stuff that we use MAYBE 30% of our running plays. One inside zone run (albeit a nice one) out of all the plays… what does that say to you?

FWIW – I just wanted to bring it to your attention the same thing Pat Weber mentioned in a comment above – Quinn Johnson was a LB at LSU before he made the transition to FB.

You present a nice case for Mr.Johnson. May I be devil’s advocate for a moment?

We normally dedicate five roster slots for FB/TE. Last year was an exception in that we tied up six. That was strictly for Quinn Johnson. If we had only kept five last year, Johnson would have been the odd man out. I don’t believe Quinn gets that mulligan this year. Mainly due to our sudden wealth at TE.

Quinn’s problem isn’t hitting someone. He is a HAMMER. Quinn’s shortcoming last year was that he often didn’t see the cut lanes like you need from your FB in the ZBS.

You have to love the results, when he sees the crease and gets there, but he has to do that far more consistently.

If QJ is to make the roster this year, he has to demonstrate a better grasp of the zone blocking system… see the lanes… and be decisive when he does.

Hall was a LB in college and therefore was accustomed to seeing holes opening and running to them. Kuhn was a feature back and sees the holes well too.

One other drawback for Quinn. He was thrown to four times last year. Two catches… two drops.

We ran more power/gap last year than any time during McCarthy’s tenure, but the ZBS is still our primary run game.

Am I the only one who noticed that there was only one zone run on the entire highlight package?

Could it be that the groundwork for a trade is being laid? Not sayin’… just sayin’.

Take it however you want, but I see QJ as the guy who has to make a pretty large jump to be on the roster opening day.
