Quick Hits: Family Night
By Alex on Aug 07, 2010 with 6 Comments
I know it’s only family night, but it’s the start of Packer football as far as I am concerned. That means one thing, and one thing only around here. It’s time for some quick hits.
The Packers vs. The Packers
Great job by FOX 11 in getting the game out to people across the world. I imagine if you missed it, there will be highlights available. What a great thing that went on tonight. We had guys from Australia, Japan, and around the globe chiming in the LIVE blog.
Quick Hits
Don’t get me wrong I love the Oneida nation, but I think it’s time to bring something new to the table.
It does not bother me a bit that a lot of the superstars were held out. Keep them healthy. Excited or not, it’s just family night.
I had to laugh at the first play. Ryan Grant for three straight ahead. Some things never change.
That was a nice catch by Jordy, until Peprah decided to hammer him. Dumbass.
The defense looked impressive early, or the offensive line just sucked.
Finley is a beast.
I like Shields, but punt returning in a scrimmage does not count. He did catch the ball though, a good start. I think of all the the undrafted guys, Shields has the most legitimate shot.
It’s just impossible to gauge anything when it’s always the first team against the second team.
Call it wishful thinking, but A.J. Hawk looked good, real good.
Graham Harrell didn’t impress me.
Neither did Matt Flynn. Bring in a veteran (three years running on that statement).
Morgan Burnett looked like he might be a player.
I am hopeful for that Brandon Underwood turns things around. Tonight was a good start. Nice call by the DJ to play “Girls, Girls, Girls” after the pick.
Bush got beat more than once. Seriously.
B.J. Raji was moving people all night long.
Aaron Rodgers is good. Need I say more?
Quarless blew a golden opportunity tonight. You can’t drop touchdowns, period.
I see the third and one hand off to Grant still does NOT work.
It looks to me like the punting battle is just about dead even.
Leave Mason Crosby alone, he’s fine.

I can’t imagine that Harrell will be sticking around. And I love having a punting battle so close – either one is miles ahead of Frost/Kapinos.
The pick six by Shields was beast mode activated.
I did not notice Shields returning punts. It seemed like Quinn Porter was doing that. I did see Shields return two kickoffs. He didn’t gain a lot of yards, but he looks like he has some moves and great acceleration. This was demonstrated on his spectacular 98-yard pick-six, which was the biggest play of the night. He also made a nice break to the ball to get the pick. If there’s one player who made a name for himself in the scrimmage (and I do think there was only one), it was Shields.
Like you, I was impressed with Hawk. A sack and two tackles for loss. At least for now, that should put an end to all of this nonsense about how Bishop should take his spot.
Did the DJ really play “Girls Girls Girls” after Underwood’s pick? That is hilarious.
I didn’t see Bush get beat, but I did see him make a very good play to break up a would-be TD pass to James Jones. He also made the first block on Shields’ interception return, and I think he made a good special teams play as well.
Too bad Quarless couldn’t make that TD catch, but it was not an easy one, so I don’t see it as a big deal. That’s what training camp is for.
Hmm. I looked and you may actually be right on that Shields thing. I swore I noted that I was happy to see Shields catch one. Oh well. I do know Bush got beat big time though. He would have given up a touchdown to one of the scrubs if the scrub had not dropped it. What was worse is that I think he was happy about it after the play.
You saw Shields catching punts? I’ll bet you also saw pink elephants and Mason Crosby making field goals…
Bush getting beat, besides being the expected, is a very good thing for Shields…
