Hush Up On Havner

Oh my god. With the outrage on Twitter, and on the Green Bay Packers facebook page, you would think we just cut Aaron Rodgers. I mean seriously.

My favorite:

Ted Thompson should be held accountable for this move. There is no way he is interested in doing what is best for the Packers. Spencer Havner was a beast and this could cost us a championship.

Let’s get real for a second. Spencer Havner was perhaps the 3rd or 4th tightend, and the 7th or 8th linebacker on this team. He was not a beast, he was a hard worker that had maximized his potential a long time ago. In fact, outside of special teams, there really wasn’t a spot for average guy like Havner anymore.

There are probably ten or more guys on this team that if given the chance could be the 4th string player at a position on the opposite side of the ball. What Spencer Havner did was unique, but certainly not special.

I wish Spencer the best of luck, but the Packers merely cut a 4th string tight end. Yes, he is a football player, no doubt. But a pedestrian one at best.

As far as costing us the Super Bowl, don’t be stupid.

    Thank you.

Havner was overrated as a TE. He caught a whopping 7 balls last year. Having 4 of them go for TDs looks like a very incidental stat to me.

He didn’t bring a thing to this team as a LB.

Versatility is great, but if you’re the 5th TE on a roster and about the 10th LBer, you shouldn’t make the team because you can play both ways.

And like the article states, chances are slim that he’ll keep on improving. He’s been with us since 2006. He’s 27 years old.

I’d rather keep two guys in Quarless and Crabtree who can still grow and get better while making just as much of an impact as Havner would’ve this year.

I liked Havner, but I do agree that if you keep him, you have to cut someone else to get down to the 53-man roster.
I agree with the article 100%, it is no knock on Spencer, but the novelty may have worn off of a 2-way player and master of none.
Good luck Spencer in the future, nice guy but we must move on.

I feel bad for the guy because he did work hard and filled in at LB when the team was thin this offseason, but when it comes down to it, Alex is right. Havner wasn’t the best man for the job in either position.

Havner will find a job somewhere else. It’s amazing that people think the world is going to end by dropping one player who plays in a position that’s already deep.

Not a huge deal. He was a jack of all trades, master of none. Nice to have a guy like that around, but it’s not the end of the world.

The only beef I have is what to do with my #4 duct-taped converted Havner jersey. See, I stuck the one in there.

I was suprised and felt bad for the guy, but for all of those p.oed at this move, why aren’t you on the Packers payroll. Good article I agree.

Alex, the world is full of over reactionary, vocal twats. What are you going to do?

There’s no stopping the bitching and moaning. Sometimes, you have to let a twat be a twat.

If 2-way player, special teamer and more than capable red zone threat Havner is pedestrian, what is Frank Zombo? Brett Swain? Matt Flynn?

I said it sucks on Twitter, simply because I liked Havner. I didn’t say I didn’t understand why. I also in no way thought it impacted being able to make it to the SB. Hope I’m not included in the grouping of idiots.

Good Lord. There should be a screening process to use Twitter. Yeah, because if we don’t win the Super Bowl it will because of Spencer Friggin Havner. Joke.

Beforehand, it looks like a bad cut. We don’t know how Crabtree and Quarless will perform.

Did I want Havner with the team? Yeah.
Does it really impact anything the Packers do this season? Absolutely not.

Funny thing, Hayvner is listed on the LB depth chart only for the Lions. They’re deep at TE (not as deep as the Packers) and he’s listed at LB only.

  18. [...] Obviously the big news this weekend was the formation of the Packers 53 man roster and the cuts that got us there.  Most of the talk & even outrage about the cuts centered on the release of Spencer Havner.  Alex at the Packers Lounge though sums it up nicely on that topic when he says Hush up on Havner.   [...]

  19. Dan says:

Everybody’s an expert today. You wanna justify cutting a 2-way player and keeping Donald “drop the ball” Lee?” Lee was waste of money again last year! And other self-proclaimed experts saying Havner cant block? Lee cant block, play defense, and has a huge contract. TT didnt want to admit Lee is and was a stupid move, period. Either they will keep him (Havner) on practice squad, which I believe, or they will loose him real quick, as there are lots of teams that will take him. Also age should have made this a clear choice to cut Lee.

What on earth is going on here.. I don’t visit for a while and the Lounge and Cheesehead TV have morphed into a quasi shape shifting dark over toned one?

Havner had value as a multi dimensional player that gave some flexibility in game day actives.. past that he wasn’t in the best 4 TE’s on the roster nor in the running for regular playing time at linebacker.

Color it not a big deal.
