Free Agency Week

Free Agency Week

It was a fun and exciting time for some teams, but the free agency period is over. How did we fare?

Not too good. We only signed backup safety Anthony Smith and while he is a good pick up, we probably could have used a couple more players on the defensive side of the ball.

If only free agency lasted more than a week. If only it was a period that went on for more than a month. If only free agency was dynamic and not a set list of players available.

OH YEAH, IT IS!

Some people think that free agency lasts a week. They are wrong. The free agency period ends on April 17th. Relax.

I knew this was coming. I knew it so much that most of this article was written on (looks at date) Sunday February 15, 2009 at 10:26 p.m. Shaq and Kobe just got co-MVP of the All Star Game. It was cute.

Ryan Pickett wasn’t signed until late March in 2006.

Charles Woodson signed in 2006 on April 26th.   April.

Yet here we are in early March and some people are freaking out. Not all of us are. Odds are YOU’RE not freaking out, but you see the others doing it. Things to keep in mind about this team:

A) They don't make a lot of free agent moves anyway

B) They are not in rebuild mode

We’re a piece or two away from being right back where we were at 13-3 or better. I’d personally rather have health than tons of new players.

Another thing to keep in mind is how things change. Who would have thought Terrell Owens would be cut and a free agent? I bet the Redskins wish they saved some money so they could sign him too!

We've got a long way to go before free agency is over so let's bring it down a notch.

So please do me a favor and calm down. We’ll be okay. We’re the Packers!

I'm not worried. It will all work out.

I'm just waiting for the schedule to come out. Then I can decide which game I want to go to. Lambeau baby!
April will be a good month. The release of the NFL schedule, Springfield/St. Louis Cardinals games, a trip to St. Louis, and my birthday!

B) Isn't in rebuild mode
Wrong!
A new defensive coaching staff, a new defensive scheme, need new defensive players!
Anthony Smith is not a good pick, Dawan Landry would have

Lets not go overboard on this defensive mindset and philosophy change.. it is a large change, but that early into the offseason, it isn't like we are scrapping all the players on this defense and starting over.

The backend of the defense might have the most to change overall, going from a straight up man concept to a zone and zone blitz concept.. but honestly other than Harris, it is mindset over difficultly.

In the box, sure the gaps and responsibilities will change, but only a few players will really feel the difference. Kampman and whomever takes the nose on... the DE will feel it in the running game with more doubles hitting them, but these guys are pros and the concepts are that different.

I refuse to let this regime us this as an excuse... so I really ask you to ask yourself, is this really rebuilding or finishing off a job and improving.

There are two other articles that pretty much say the same thing. Frankly, I stand by everything I said earlier. When you're in need of a starting OLB and DE, Back-up NT (which we still need all three) it is a situation. No one was saying the season was over, just that there was cause for concern.

That isn't to say we can't do great during this free agency. Because if we land Burnett and either Carter or Holliday it will be a pretty good haul.
