One of the things (one of many) that pisses me off on a regular basis is watching how content develops. I agree that Twitter and other new sources of information have certainly enhanced the knowledge we so desperately crave. These developing technologies, although amazing, have led to a whole new genre of copy writing -- taking a one liner and somehow spinning it into a headline.
Case in point last night on the subject of Nick Collins. A simple question about the safety holding out was presented to Bedard. His answer is now a national Packer headline.
Now, let it be known that Greg Bedard is probably about as informed as they come on the Green Bay Packers. His writing style and friendly personality have also somehow turned him into the Chris Berman of Packer news. Super-stardom aside, this does not make everything he says a story.
I wake up this morning and this silly tweet is headline news all over the place. It's a story on rotoworld, MSNBC, and of course at Railbird Central (Has anyone that noticed that site is ALL over google now?). Seriously, get a life. It's a tweet, from a phone, in reply to an unanswerable question. It's an opinion people; informed maybe, but still just that. This is hardly breaking news.
Now, I know there are a few of you all already upset and thinking I am letting Bedard have it here too, but you would be mistaken. Greg Bedard is not stupid, and if he did have any solid inkling of what Nick Collins was going to do, I'll guarantee he wouldn't be sharing it with you on Twitter. Things like that are saved for the spotlight.
The truth on Collins is that no one knows what is going to happen. I also don't neccesary agree that this will be a messy and near guaranteed hold out for Nick. No one takes into account the many X-factors that could be going through Nick's head. Yes, he may be money hungry, but who is to say that other things aren't more important to Nick right now?
Last season was a hard one for Nick. His father died, he was catching a lot of flack, and he played on a 6-10 team. This season the variables are a little different. He now plays on a contender, the competition at his position in the NFC allows him to get the probowl on stats alone, and this is just a guess, but I bet Nick would love to look to the sky with a Super Bowl trophy in his hands and take a moment to say thank you to the man who taught him so much.
If I had to wager, I would think the process will be much smoother and much less a distraction than anyone is predicting... which is all we can do right now.

I also watched the progession of this bit of "news". It's fascinating, really, how it morphed to become a gauranteed holdout from an innocent Twitter opinion.

I cannot go through this again.
When he was "holding out" last year, I said over and over again: "there must be something wrong". Everybody was killing him.
Then, we discover his father was in the imminence of passing. Everybody chilled out, I didn't say "I told you so" out of respect for him.
But as soon as the dust settled, there were people already bashing Collins (A.K.A. Nagler).
And now this again?
Let me repeat: Nick Collins is a pro. He progressed tremenduously last year, from a playmaker that got burned consistantly to a top-3 safety in the league.
I doubt he holds out, but if he does, it'll have more to do than money.

Top 3. Really? Think you’re a hands worth of digits off on that. So it's Troy, Ed and Nick? Never thought his game merited that kind of respect, I'll take a look back and reassess. I like Nick, think he can get better, don't think he's an elite Safety in this league at this moment in time. JMO

To clarify, I know the kid gets his picks and has made a couple of probowls (which I lend ZERO credence to). I just don't remember him taking over a game like Troy or Ed have done on numerous occasions.

Let's not forget that this guy went to the pro bowl last year. If he wants money, than give it to him. The secondary needs all the help they can get after last year's performance

I think Nick should and will get paid. But dude, David Garrard went to the pro bowl last year as well... food for thought.

Yes he was in the secondary, and, since he went to the pro bowl, I think that they should keep the talent. Sorry, that was poorly worded by me.
As for Garrard, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he a reserve for someone else?

Garrard was way down the list. He only got in because Manning was in the SB and three other guys ahead of him begged off. Even then he was only the third-stringer.
But yeah, the Pro Bowl is crap. All-Pro still carries some weight though.

Yep, Garrard was a reserve, so what (he was a 2009 pro bowler, he can put that on his resume)? I'm just saying that throwing $$$ at players 'cause they "made" the pro bowl is not conducive to running a good business.

I'm all for keeping the talent and adding to it by any means necessary. Your original post sounded to me that, just 'cause the guy made the pro bowl we should back the Brinks truck up to his front door. I think he has earned the right to be taken care of, he will probably get paid top 5 Safety $$$, I hope he plays like a top 5, though I haven't seen it yet.
He still blows too many assignments/makes too many mental errors for me to think of him as 'elite', I hope that changes for me next season.

Every safety gets burned... nature of the business. Darren made more plays, P-E-R-I-O-D.
Put the games on a DVD like me (thanks for your express written consent Roger) and watch them a few times, if you still need me to point them out to you... lemme know, be glad to help.

Nick Collins isn't going to get paid yet. He may deserve it, but this is a business and he's still a restricted free agent. Until they have to, the Packers aren't going to extend him/re-sign him. It could happen during the season, but the Packers could just be setting things up for a franchise tag next year (assuming there is no lockout). I don't know if Collins will miss some of the offseason or not because of a holdout, but he'll be on the field for opening day.
