Cedric Benson Signs With the Packers

Cedric Benson is a Packer.

After days of specualtion, the Packers and free agent Running Back Cedric Benson have finally agreed to terms on a deal.

Although terms of the deal have not been revealed, Adam Schefter did give one detail about the deal when he tweeted the following:

Former Bengals RB Cedric Benson officially signed a one-year deal with the Green Bay Packers.

A three time 1,000 yard rusher, Benson will be asked to shore up a Green Bay running backs corps which has been hampered by (apparently) ineffectiveness and injury thus far through the preseason.

With James Starks hampered by turf toe, Alex Green still working his way back from an ACL injury, Brandon Saine another week or so away, and Du'ane Bennett out as well, the Packers are thin at the position. Benson will hopefully be able to add instant creditability to the position.

Benson does come to Green Bay with some baggage. He has been arrested in the past, and was not effective when he was in Chicago the first three years of his career. If he is able to stay out of trouble, and does what he is asked to do, Benson will be yet another weapon in an already explosive offense.

Note: Since the signing was announced, Andrew Brandt tweeted the following info about Benson's deal:

Am told that Cedric Benson's contract w/Packers is one-year at vet minimum for his seven years in NFL: $825,000. No bonus.

If @adbrandt is to be believed (and why not) does that explain why Benson over Grant? e.g. Benson will sign for min contract. Grant won't...?
