A Weekend Never Soon Forgotten Part 2: The Tailgate and the Game

Throwback Weekend memoirs part 2

As the sun rose on Sunday, October 16 2011, shining brilliantly on the waters of Green Bay, it was obvious what the plans were.

It was Packers game day. More importantly, it was Throwback Weekend Packers game day.

As everyone wiped the sleep off their eyes and tried to gather their thoughts from the tweet up the previous night (or just a few hours earlier) it was now everyone's duty to deck themselves out in green and gold. Lambeau Field was calling, and everyone heard the call.

A short drive over to the Green Bay Distillery (the most fortunate thing about Green Bay is everything is no more than 15 minutes away) brought us to our destination. The Cheesehead TV/Pocket Doppler/First String PR Throwback Weekend tailgate. This was going to be great.

There is  nothing quite like the smell of brats cooking in the cool air, especially when they are being cooked 2 blocks from Lambeau. The air was thick with the smoky goodness, and the beer was plentiful, as evidenced by the multiple coolers sitting in front of the tables that  were set up. Robert Hammen deserves so much thanks for serving as grill master for the tailgate-he worked from the time we arrived until just before it was time to head over to the game. I'm not even sure if he ate, but I sure did. Thanks Robert!

One by one, the familar faces from the night before began to arrive. Although some were more awake than others, after a while everyone was ready to get their Packers on. The sight of jerseys began to overtake the parking lot, as more and more arrived in preperation for the game.

While Amanda and Cara were busily taking pics at the photo booth, Brian was hard at work intervewing participants for the outstanding, must watch video from the weekend. I personally took great pride in watching Jersey Al take his first bite of a Wisconsin cheese curd. It was like watching pure joy.

Unfortunately, not all was well during the tailgate. My wife, who had trooped it out the previous night while feeling under the weather, took a turn for the worse. Sick with a very sore back, she unfortunately had to bail out of the game. Such a terrible thing, to get all the way to Green Bay only to get really ill was something I would not wish on anyone. She graciously gave her ticket up, choosing to stay behind so someone else could enjoy the game. And enjoy the game they would.

Remember that dance CD was doing? The dance complete with the can of peanuts? That was his reaction when he found out he was going to the game. If you were there, you'll always remember it. If not, there may be a video of the dance. It may emerge at some point.

As the time ticked down to the start of the game, it became picture time. Everyone was snapping pics of everyone, making every moment count, knowing that we had been part of something special this weekend. From Steve the Owner to Ken, Joe to Sunnie and everyone in between, pics were taken to commemorate a weekend never to be forgotten. My personal favorite picture of the weekend is the one of my fellow Cheesehead Radio co-hosts, all together at Lambeau Field for a game.  Very special.

As we headed over to Lambeau, it was time to put the game face on. Just you and 70,000 of your closest friends cheering on the best team in all of professional sports. There really is nothing like a game at Lambeau, and I hope everyone has the chance to see  at least one game there in their lifetime.

Sitting next to CD and Robert over the Packers tunnel, in seats which I would recommend to anyone who ever has the opportunity to sit over the tunnel, I proceeded to watch the Packers lay a 24-3 whoopin on the hapless Rams. Every play, and I mean EVERY play was analyzed by all three of us. Imagine an episode of Cheesehead  Radio taking place in the stands at Lambeau-that's basically what was happening. Some good points were brought up during the game-unfortunately you'll have to tune into this week's show to find out what our thoughts were (shameless plug).

As we arrived back at the Distillery, it was clear that we were going to have to head home. My wife was in agony, and while I was grateful that she stuck through the game so CD and I could enjoy, the time to leave Throwback Weekend had arrived. It was time to head home.

The events of Throwback Weekend are something that I will remember forever. Very seldom in life can you say you were part of something special. Those are the moments you remember, the memories of which you keep with you, the events which you will speak fondly of for years to come. Throwback Weekend was special. A gathering of true Packer fans in one place, most of whom had never met and gathered in the shadows of Lambeau. A better script could not have been written for the weekend.

As Green Day so eloquently stated a few years ago, It's something unpredictable but in the end it's right. I hope you had the time of your life

Thank you to everyone for a fantastic weekend. Let's do it again next year!

I really wanted to attend Throwback Weekend but I have lived vicariously thru everyone's tweets, pictures, & articles. Very well written John, it's unfortunate your wife couldn't make the game, it is such an experience! But what a trooper!

Thanks much. You must make the trip next year. It really is impossible to describe how great it was unless you were there.

My wife is upset that she could not go to the game, but very happy her ticket was able to go to good use. She really is a trooper
