Zombo Ruled Out For Vikings Game, Lattimore May Join Him

After breaking his scapula in training camp, the outside linebacker hyperextended his knee against the Rams.

One week after making his season debut, outside linebacker Frank Zombo did not practice on Wednesday and has already been ruled out for this week's game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Zombo hyperextended his knee in the Week 6 game against the Rams after having missed the first five weeks of the season with a broken scapula.

"Frank had an unfortunate setback," said head coach Mike McCarthy in his Wednesday press conference. "I would think he would be ready after the bye week. I don't think this is going to be anything long."

Fellow outside linebacker Jamari Lattimore may join him on the inactive list with an injured shoulder. He didn't practice this afternoon, though he hasn't officially been ruled out like Zombo.

"It's time to probably shut him down for a week," said McCarthy.

With the annual bye following the Vikings game, players will get an extra extra week of rest and recovery before coming back for game at San Diego in Week 9.

Josh Sitton, who was limited all last week with an ankle injury, now has a knee injury to go along with it. He didn't practice at all on Wednesday, and McCarthy said he may be a limited participant in tomorrow's practice and hopes that he can practice in a fuller capacity by Friday.

Cornerback Sam Shields, who suffered a concussion in the Rams game, did not practice but did undergo testing on Wednesday, and according to McCarthy the doctors feel good about the progress he's made.

They must also feel good about cornerback Charles Woodson who practiced on a Wednesday for the first time since Week 2. He had typically been held out of the first practice of the week with foot and knee injuries, but is making progress.

As far Chad Clifton goes, McCarthy said he's getting better.

"Just the medical report today, he's making progress, and he's going through another procedure this week that they think is definitely going to help him," said McCarthy.

No decision will be made about Clifton's long-term prognosis until the bye week, however.

With Zombo and Lattimore out this week, he might finally get his shot.

What a retarded statement. You couldn't be more wrong man.

Zombo ended up playing 13 games last year, and was for the most part, at least serviceable.

Meanwhile, Mr. Justin Harrell played in 14 games over 4 years and was not effective, while Mr. Mike Neal played has played effectively in 2 games out of 26 at this point.

You missed the sarcasm. No one is "the next Harrell." Freak injuries happen.

Totally agree with the comments... Neal could be worst than Harrell! Zombo was very durable last year! He doesn't have chance this year (period)... You cannot be serious man!

He's slated to star in the new Asimov movie. He wouldn't even have to act

Maybe Clifton is getting some stem cell therapy or platelet rich blood transfusions, something like that.

If So'oto isn't active and allowed to contribute on defense this week than im not sure if they will ever use him.

I respectfully disagree with the assertion that if So'oto isn't active this week they'll never use him. Keep in mind he's a rookie, an undrafted one at that, who did not get the benefit of OTA's and mini camp, and then suffered a freak injury at the start of the season. They are bringing him along slowly, both because of the injury and the fact that he's a rookie, and to be quite honest, could stand to put on a few more pounds.

Let's face it, he's a project with a big upside, but a project nonetheless. I expect a significant contribution from him next year if he can continue to improve, but I don't expect much from him this year. Zombo and Shields last year were definitely exceptions, undrafted free agents starting in the Super Bowl is almost unheard of, and I think some fans are expecting to see more of that, which isn't realistic.
