Zombo Played Cardinals Game With Broken Scapula

Outside linebacker Frank Zombo broke his scapula during pregame last Friday night.

Mike McCarthy dropped a mini-bombshell to start off his post-practice press conference, telling reporters that Frank Zombo had suffered a broken scapula during pregame last Friday night when he ran into John Kuhn during warm ups.

Zombo went on to play the preseason contest without any noticeable limitation.

McCacrthy indicated that Zombo would be out for a "significant amount of time" but refused to speculate of the second year linebacker would be a candidate for injured reserve.

One would think a broken scalpula would have to be at least 8-10 weeks. It takes a significant amount of time to regain the strength required in the shoulder area. Anyone who's had a shoulder injury can tell you it's something you don't rush back from.

Maybe they'd wait till after the October 30 bye. At that point, seven regular season games would have gone by.

Damn. I was rooting for him to win the spot mainly because he does the Zorro "Z" in the air after a sack, and that's awesome.

If he still played with a scapula fracture,my best guess would be he has a chipped acromion. The tip of the scapula where the scapula mets the the collar bone to form the AC joint is called the acromion, and Zombo probably has a chip of bone fractured off causing some pain. (btw, this is not an AC seperation which is a tear to the ligament connecting the two.)

It hurts like the dickens but doens't ultimately affect form or function. Treatment is rest. No surgery or immobilization is needed. Would not be surprised if he's ready to go against the Saints.

Sounds like someone has more than a bachelor's degree in PR/Marketing and may have more credibility in the injury diagnosis area than myself :)

Well there's broken as in crack down the middle. That doesn't come from a pregame warm up. That usually occurs in high velocity injuries like a motor vehicle accident. And quite frankly, you wouldn't be able to continue playing with that type of fracture. And then there is chipped. More common and with a significantly shorter healing time.

wouldn't want either. Just want people to not preemptively assume crash positions with Zombo until we know more information.

So it's primarily a case of letting the bone heal, rather than regaining the strength required to fight 320-lb. lineman?

Years back, I read that the AC joint is the most flexible of all joints in the body. Since this is the case, the AC joint and the surrounding structural support is probably also the most resilient? Or not necessarily?

I've come to dread the words "significant injury" from McCarthy. In the past it's always lead to a player going on IR.

Of course he didn't EXACTLY say that...

I never want a player to get hurt, but I was actually hoping Walden would get the bulk of the snaps at OLB. He was so raw last year when he played and now hopefully getting all the 1's snaps will help him get more comfortable with the position. His ceiling seems higher to me then Zombo's. But I do wish Zombo a speedy recovery.

Here we go again. Injuries piling up already. I think this might actually happen league wide this year. Cobb is banged up as well.

It is league wide, and believe it or not, the Packers appear to have fewer injuries than most. I really believe McCarthy and his staff have taken the right approach to camp. That being said, the real injuries are going to happen league wide starting in week 1 when everybody is going full speed and no longer in 'vanilla' mode with their play (i.e. - people coming from unpredictable angles at full-speed, unlike training camp and pre-season).

"McCacrthy indicated that Zombo would be out for a "significant amount of time""

Google Translate:

McCarthy indicated that Zombo would be out for the season.

I hope TT and MM develop a sense of urgency and find somebody quickly. I have faith in TT, he pulled Zombo from obscurity last year and the coaches turned him into a viable OLB. What ever happened to Cyril Obizoor (sp)???

You must not have been paying attention too closely Friday night Brian. He was playing for the Cardinals. :)

Zombo's injury could open the door for the two undrafted guys Lattimore and So'oto who I think has some game.

With Jones out too I look forward to seeing what these guys can do with the extended action they will get.

PUP list candidate.

Would give some of the rookie OLBs a chance at the 53-man roster.

We need to give Ceallaigh a regular injury column on here at the rate we see injuries. Apparently we need doctors or athletic trainers telling us what goes on during football games more than sports writers. My god when I first read this news I started to get that feeling inside I got last year (we won the super bowl), but I don't think I can take it again.

Weel, all those cheering for Walden to win the starting job on CTV can breathe a sigh of relief. Speedy recovery Frank!

Jones is hurt (again) as well so look for TT to pick up an OLB or two when the final countdowns are made. GB will likey need a starter now that Zombo is out for awhile and another, more reliable player than Jones for depth as well.
