Wisconsin Linebacker T.J. Watt will have Meeting with the Packers

Another member of the Watt family is making noise in the sports world once again and believe it or not, it isn't J.J.

T.J., the youngest of the three Watt brothers and standout linebacker for the Wisconsin Badgers confirmed on Saturday at the NFL Scouting Combine, one day before his positional drills, that he has a formal meeting with his home state Green Bay Packers in the works.

After making the transition from tight end to outside linebacker just two years ago, Watt has all but a mere 22 games under his belt at the position. Yet, he's a prospect that has been heavily mocked to the Packers in hopes that he can become just as much of a defensive powerhouse as his older brother did, also a former Badger.

"Coach Tim Timbesar taught me everything I know at outside linebacker at Wisconsin," Watt said in his Combine interviews, provided by Acme Packing Co. "From just little things to my first step to dropping in coverage to the pass rush.

"The hardest thing for me was the steep learning curve. Playing offense for most of my life, I knew where I was going. I wasn't really reacting to different players and different plays."

After missing his freshman season at Wisconsin with a knee injury, Watt played just two seasons at the school before choosing to forego his senior season and declare eligible for the 2017 NFL Draft, where he's a significantly popular favorite to be taken in the first two rounds. Watt recorded 70 total tackles - 17 of them for a loss of yardage - and 11.5 sacks, all of which came during his junior year. He also tallied an athletic interception which he returned for a touchdown against Purdue.

"I love Wisconsin, I love the fans, I love my teammates," Watt said. "I want to win a National Championship just like anyone else in college football, but at the same time, I felt like I have a great support system, this is what I've been wanting to do since I was a little kid and the opportunity finally was realistic. I've always wanted to play in the NFL, but it obviously wasn't a realistic option until I played at a high level in college.

"Once that opportunity came, I couldn't say 'no.'"

Ironically, Watt's first career start at outside linebacker came during Wisconsin's 2016 season opener against LSU at Lambeau Field.

"It was a crazy atmosphere. It was an atmosphere that ve never, never experienced before... It was just an unbelievable day."

Many believe that won't be the last time Watt plays at the Packers' hallowed turf as a member of the home team. If the Packers did look for Watt at their 29th overall selection, it would be the third time in general manager Ted Thompson's tenure that they drafted a linebacker in round one. The first came in 2006 with A.J. Hawk at fifth overall, and the second was Clay Matthews in 2009 at 26th. Matthews was the second of two first-round picks for the Packers and he came after they selected defensive tackle B.J. Raji earlier in the round at ninth.

The hope is that Watt would instantly help bolster a pass-rushing unit who left much to be desired on the field in 2016 and can be pinpointed as one of the major reasons why the cornerbacks unit struggled to immensely. Nick Perry is set to hit the market, Matthews has fended off nagging injuries seemingly every year and is only getting older and Julius Peppers is likely to retire.

Whether or not Perry returns to the Packers in 2017 remains to be seen, but Thompson says he is "hopeful" that at least one or two deals will be worked out before the start of free agency on March ninth.

If the Packers take him in round 2, it will be because they traded up a la Jason Spriggs.

Or traded back. This might be a great draft to trade back to the beginning of the second and then try and trade up higher in the second again. Their are a lot of Edge players and CBs that will still be around until the middle of the second round.

Edge players (who might be available) I would take over Watt (in no particular order):

McKinley
Harris
Lawson
Walker
Williams
Barnett
Charlton
Reddick - though I like him inside better.
Bowser-maybe
Basham-maybe

Hahaha Barnett and Harris still available ....you're funny. Harris is an absolute freak and won't make it past 20. And Barnett is close behind him.

Watt will likely be gone before 29 on name recognition alone.

Hmm. Yet the other brother, Derek Watt, went to the Chargers in the 6th round, 198th overall.

You might be overestimating the impact of "name recognition." No one will draft him in any round because of his name.

True Marpeg but I think he will still go before our 2nd round picks comes around . So we either move up in the 2nd round or out of the first round for an early 2 Nd round pick.

Yeah, it seems the common consensus is that he's a late D1 early D2 sort of guy, and given the fact that everyone wants pass rushers, that's probably about right.

He certainly could be a stud - who knows, really? - but I still have some reservations, and I'm not actually pushing for the Packers to draft him. I guess I wouldn't be disappointed if they did. But the question that keeps nagging me with TJ is, "How exactly is this guy much different than Kyler Fackrell?"

Or we can just pass on drafting Watt altogether. We don't have to try to massage the board to make this work just because he's a Badger named Watt. The Clay Matthews comparisons baffle me when he closely mirrors Kyler's build and probably is closer to his athletic #'s as well.

Your #3 doesn't hold water. The Packers averaged 4.5 PC which is pretty good. Monty 5.9 and Lacy 5.1 is nothing to sneeze at. As far as AP, fuck him. I would love to see Watt, he is a football player.

At 235, isn't Watt a bit too light to play OLB for the Packers? Fackrell at 245 wasn't doing that great last season. An OLB should weigh about 255 like Matthews or 265 like Perry or 287 like Peppers.

Watt could add 10 lbs of muscle no problem, or go on the Eddie Lacy diet and add 20.
