What Should the Packers Do About Darnell Savage’s Fifth-Year Option?

The Green Bay Packers have a tough decision to make regarding safety Darnell Savage. The Packers selected the former Maryland star in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft with the 21st overall pick. The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) gives teams the ability to sign rookies to a four-year deal for their entry-level contract. But for first-round draft picks, teams have the option to extend their contract by one more season. This is known as the fifth-year option and it must be exercised prior to the start of the player’s fourth season in the NFL.

When teams make that choice, there are set salaries for the one-year extension that gives teams control of the player for a fifth season. Savage’s 2023 cap hit would be approximately $7.92 million.

The big question is whether it is wise to extend Savage for a fifth year at that price. If they don’t exercise the fifth-year option, Savage would become an unrestricted free agent in March of 2023 unless he and the team agree to an extension. If the Packers do pick up Savage’s fifth-year option, he would not become a UFA until March 2024 and the team would have his services for two more seasons.

Savage’s play has been up and down since he joined the Packers. He earned All-Rookie honors in 2019 mainly on the strength of his coverage skills. He started 16 games as a rookie and made two interceptions while limiting opposing quarterbacks to a 56.7 percent completion percentage when they threw to receivers covered by him according to pro-football-reference.com.

His biggest weakness was considered his tackling. Savage is a smaller player at 5’11” and 198-pounds and at times, he missed tackles and failed to wrap up receivers after they caught the football.

In his second season, Savage got off to a slow start but he was playing at a Pro Bowl level late in the year. The light seemed to come on for Savage and he and Adrian Amos became one of the best safety duos in the NFL. Their strong play was a major reason the Packers finished 2020 with a six-game winning streak.

In the final six games of the 2020 campaign, Savage intercepted four passes, made 26 tackles including two tackles for loss and broke up seven passes. He was playing well in pass coverage and making plays in the box when he was lined up near the line of scrimmage. Then defensive coordinator Mike Pettine was comfortable playing Savage closer to the line because he relied on the steadiness of Adrian Amos to cover things in the secondary. This minor adjustment made a big difference for Savage and the Green Bay defense.

But in 2021, the Packers replaced Pettine with Joe Barry. There was hope after training camp that Barry’s defense would be a great fit for Savage and there was talk Savage could even be a candidate for the “star” position in Barry’s defense.

Towards the end of training camp, quarterback Aaron Rodgers told Larry McCarren, “I think this defense really fits him. He’s able to be a lot more rangier. You look at his skill set, extremely athletic and fast, can cover sideline to sideline, but he’s got good instincts as well. So, I think this is going to allow him to be in a position to make a lot more plays.”

Unfortunately, Savage took a step back in 2021 and was less consistent. Although he played in all 17 games in 2021, he made 12 fewer tackles, two fewer interceptions, broke up three fewer passes and one fewer tackle for loss.

Opposing quarterback also had more success throwing to receivers covered by Savage. They completed 64.9 percent of their passes and had a quarterback rating of 117.4, up from just 67.3 the previous season.

Instead of building on his strong finish to 2020, Savage was less consistent and making fewer impact plays in his third NFL season. That’s not to say he was bad, but his performance was disappointing.

Now, GM Brian Gutekunst must decide whether it makes sense to exercise the fifth-year option on Savage and pay him $7.92 million in 2023. Part of that decision will be determining whether Savage’s play in 2021 was just an off year or more indicative of what his true long-term play will look like going forward. The Packers future salary cap situation is also an issue although the cap is expected to go up significantly in 2023 as the NFL’s new television deals start to kick in.

Right now, it makes sense to give Savage the fifth year and then determine whether he deserves a second, long-term deal that would keep him in Green Bay through the prime of his career. But Gutekunst will have the ultimate decision on Savage’s future.

I really liked him coming out. He really showed up late last year as Gil said. Buuuuttt. . . this year, even though the defense and his instincts put him in position to make plays, he didn't, especially during crunch time it seemed. This year he displayed stone hands, poor tackling, poor angles and blown coverage. He's young and athletic. Is he willing to put in the work to add 10 to 15 good pounds to his frame and improve ball skills, etc? He didn't do it this past off season? Tough call indeed. GPG!

Savage's outstanding physical trait is his 4.36 speed. I am not sure that adding 15 pounds is in his best interest, or whether the Packers asked him to do that.

Since these guys are so young, one would think they would naturally add some pounds as they get older. Why, I myself have added 40 pounds since college!

Collins didn’t become the Collins we remember until his 4th season in the league. That is not uncommon at S. I think it’s also true that safeties often have a harder job settling in with the changes that come with a new coordinator. Savage has talent, he may yet break out. This season he was just OK.

I don’t want to see us lose a S coming into his own like we did with Hyde (accepting that he was a cb with us). That’s a real possibility. If he plays well, his long term cost goes up markedly. We can’t afford to replace him with better in FA this year and I don’t think we should expect better from a rookie (even if I wanted a S in round 1 or 2).

I’d pick up the option and decide whether to extend during the coming season ideally. If we can’t afford that, we then have the option next off season or can seek to move him.

We have more defensive backs than we need, so we should let Savage leave instead of paying him.🤪

Maybe I don’t know the semantics of off season jockeying, but this sure made me laugh.

Good. I wasn't serious, but others are. Let's trade up in the first round and then get rid of the guy because we don't think he's good enough to pay. Sheeesh.

Who was a better player for us last year, Jaire Alexander or Darnell Savage? Savage, obviously. He was in uniform.

We'll be suiting up 21 defensive players in the season opener. He's one.

Nah, this is about sheer money and how much a team should gamble on their underperforming draft picks.

Savage plays safety so we are only talking about $7.9M. If he were an underperforming OL whose playtime 5th year option was $12.73M, I'd be looking at my hole card and taking another think on whether to exercise his option.

It is also about whether a GM can tacitly admit that he missed on the player. I don't think that fits Savage's case. He has more than flashed as he had a fairly long period of exceptional play previously, perhaps half a season. I think it is there with Savage, and it is up to Barry and Gray to make him shine.

I guess we need to decide - do we have an Eli Apple or a Micah Hyde. Sometimes - fit and responsibilities seem to go hand and hand. Perhaps we can trade him and let another team decide or make sure that he is put into a position to succeed and maybe what Barry was trying to do didnt work or just didnt work this year. I also think ( if the injury thing isnt a big issue) that Kevin King can play close to the line of scrimmage and that might factor into to whether or not Savage is an asset or a liability ( from both play and cap perspectives). I do have issues with guys who dont want to or are unable to or afraid to stick their noses in to tackle. GB has had that too much recently since Woodson and you dont seem to see that with the Ravens or Steelers.

King will be replaced by a better CB from the draft or a journeyman.

His grades say it all. Trade him. The guy is another illusion of grandeur. The guy won't come into his own, when he's got no Balls. He's flat out lazy. Let Douglas try it at safety. There is No way the packers should pick up his 5th year. The guy has a bad back.

Wait, what? He had a back injury later in the SF game, has no history of back issues, and now he has back troubles that are a problem?

Wonder what that tells us. He’s not a LaFleur guy or from a LaFleur tree system. I take it as indicative that Murphy is pulling the strings actively.

Sigh.

I don't know if Clements is good, bad, indifferent, or is past it. The NFL is really good about recycling.

Edit: I just looked up Clements. He retired in 2017 and was out of football for two years. Then he went to ARI as the passing game coordinator (ARI doesn't have an offensive coordinator because it is Kingsbury's show) for 2019. As QB coach/passing coordinator, he dealt with Kyler Murray during his rookie year, and Murry was OROY. Clements continued in that role in 2020 and Murray improved. I don't know if that is due to Clements, Kingsbury or the player himself. Clements retired and was out of football for one year, that is the 2021 season.

So he has not been out of football for an extended time. Arguably, he has some good things to put on his resume. He is 68 years old, but he not been out to pasture. He might still be Murphy's guy, but Gute was around when Clements was here, and I have not checked to see if he crossed paths with LaFleur at some point.

It's almost a coin flip, but I would lean toward picking it up and the Packers probably will, too. I wouldn't say that Savage is not a difference-maker, but he's not really an impact player, either-- and he's had his opportunities. He's better than some of the others we've had in the recent past, but you'd like to see more out of a first-round pick. So take the wait-and-see approach before you make any further commitments, and make sure you take at least one safety in the upcoming draft (we have no quality depth there, anyway).

No extension until he shows more. They should pick up one or two from the draft. Black can leave. Scott may show something. Sp Teams needs some head hunters.

Savage confuses me. Has he played up to the level of where he was picked? Probably not? has his ceiling been reached? Again, probably not. He’s neither a star or a jag. What do you do with a guy like that? Well, basically I think you keep him but definitely don’t hand him a blank check.

I remember an interview with the Steelers Tomlin was asked about a player and the FIRST thing he pointed out as a checklist on a Defensive player was....wait for it....CAN HE TACKLE WELL. Enough said.

He has become HHCD 2.0. Let him walk. Draft a big safety instead. These little guys don’t hold up.
