Western Michigan's Drew Nowak to Visit Packers Thursday

The MAC defensive player of the year will be in Green Bay Thursday for an official visit.

The Green Bay Packers will have Western Michigan defensive end Drew Nowak in town for a visit Thursday, according to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Nowak was the Mid-Atlantic Conference defensive player of the year last season.

A native of the Green Bay area, Nowak finished his four-year college career at Western Michigan with 30.5 tackles for losses and 11 sacks in 47 games (32 starts). He burst onto the scene his senior season, registering 20.5 tackles for losses and 8.5 sacks in being named the conference's defensive player of the year.

Nowak was the No. 8 overall high school prospect in the state of Wisconsin in 2007, according to Scout.com.

Nowak failed to receive an invitation to the NFL scouting combine but did workout at Western Michigan's pro day on March 13, running the 40-yard dash in 5.25 seconds and bench-pressing 225 lbs. 17 times. At 6-4, 295 pounds, Nowak would almost certainly be expected to play as a five-technique defensive end in the Packers' 3-4 front.

The Sports Exchange ranks Nowak as the 58th best defensive end and 999th overall prospect in the 2012 class. Many of the larger draft sites, including National Football Post, do not even list Nowak on their defensive line rankings. He's likely to be a player the Packers look at as an undrafted free agent.

Just about every player the Packers have in for a visit are potential undrafted FAs and maybe a few guys with old or new injuries they want the docs to examine.

If they like him enough he could end up as one of our 4, 7th round picks.

17? I try not to get too geeked out about combine numbers (or their imitations) but 17? For a guy who weights 295 lbs. Get that boy whatever Neal was using, stat. :-)

Speaking of Neal, if Nowak sticks in the NFL he'll probably have a better career than the training-room wonder.
