Week Three Gut Reactions
By PackerAaron
- The Packers will never win a Super Bowl with Bob Sanders as their Defensive Coordinator. Period.
- Cullen Jenkins, I apologize.
- Three wide receivers against six defensive backs: Not good odds.
- McCarthy simply HAS to clean up the penalties. Ug-ly.
- Why punt with nine minutes to go down by 18?
- The Cowboys could not cover Greg Jennings until they knew the Packers had to throw.
- Aaron Rodgers, please tell me what you told Madden about only ever reading half the field isn't true. That's Randall Cunningham circa 1998.
- And while we're chatting Aaron, you have Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and James Jones. Why are you only looking to Jordy Nelson 20 times in the two minute drill? Perhaps you really DO only read one half of the field...
- Memo to McCarthy: Don't lose your nerve when you're backed up in your own end.
- Addendum: Don't lose your nerve inside the opponents 15 yard line either.
- While we're at it coach: The predictability of your first down playcalls are killing your team.
- The Packers will never win a Super Bowl with Bob Sanders as Defensive Coordinator.
- ...and before the whole "The offense didn't stay on the field" crowd joins in in the comment section, there is absolutely ZERO excuse for the horrific game plan drawn up by Bob Sanders tonight. He had all offseason to watch film of his four man defensive line not generating a pass rush on Tony Romo - so what does he do? He rushes four almost all game. Idiotic.
- The Packers will never win a Super Bowl with Bob Sanders as their Defensive Coordinator.
- Oh - and lest anyone think I am blaming this loss on Sanders: McCarthy needs to take the training wheels off his offense if he expects to compete for "the worlds championship" as he is always telling us.

Of all your points -- how do you NOT mention the absence of the running game? I agree that the play-calling on defense was bad. But we did SHUT DOWN Terrell Owens, the most explosive wide out in the game -- what that cost us was allowing Barber to run us up and down the field. Hence, with lack of a running game on our side, burned our defense out.

Simmer down there, pot-roast.
One thing that this rant fails to account for is that Dallas is actually not too shabby. They have sort of a good team down there that will give every defense some problems.
Blitzing is also not always the answer (I actually tend to think that it is seldom the answer). They got burned on the blitz at least one time that I recall.
Overall, and feel free to call me crazy. I didn't think the defense did too bad. The majority of the Cowboy's points came off two big plays (which is bad). But then the defense also created two big plays (which is good).
Not that Sanders is great, but I think this loss was much more a function of the offense not being able to move the ball, and not being able to score TDs in the redzone.
No more spread offense on 3rd and 2.

Come on, DDD. It's called 'Gut Reactions' - not 'Morning After You've Had Some Time To Think About It All Reactions' ;)

I agree with a big of what Aaron has to say and a bit of what DDD has to say.
McCarthy was going with the spread offense waaaaaay too much in the early going. The Dallas D-Line is super-aggressive and they needed to use that aggressiveness against them with some counters and misdirection. Plus, running the ball keeps Romo-TO-Barber off the field and your defense fresher. As last week's game against Philly showed, you're unlikely to triumph in a shootout against Dallas.
I thought Rouse had a horrendous game, and I think AJ Hawk is being horribly underutilized. I will admit to being very biased and a big fan of Hawk's, but I feel like the dude plays his butt off and is all over the field. They need to do a better job of keeping him clean and maybe having him run/pass blitz some more. I think he is more than capable of anchoring this D.
Kampman was ok and Jenkins was very good all night, but our DTs got annihilated last night.
