Tylan Grable NFL Draft Prospect Profile and Scouting Report

UCF Offensive Tackle Tylan Grable - 2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Name: Tylan Grable

School: Jacksonville State/UCF

Year: SupSr

Position: Offensive Tackle

Measurables: 6056 306, 10 1/8th hands, 33 5/8th arms,

Combine: 4.95 40, 1.69 10-yard split, 36.5 vert, 9’9” broad

General Info:

Grable has a very interesting story that has been fun to follow the last few years. Coming out of high school he was a quarterback and played basketball. He missed his senior year due to injury, so he had very little interest coming out. Grable ended up signing with Jacksonville State who was in the FCS at the time and redshirted his first season in 2018. As a redshirt freshman in 2019 he played in every game seeing time at both tight end and offensive line. He became a full time starter at offensive tackle in the spring 2021 season, garnering numerous FCS honors (AFCA All-American Second team, Sophomore All-American, and All-OVC First team). After all those accolades he decided to enter the transfer portal and he eventually signed with Central Florida. Grable started every game at left tackle his first season in Orlando and was named Third-team All-AAC by PFF. The former Gamecock returned for his 6th and final season at UCF and again started every game at LT. He was named honorable mention Big-12. The former Knight was invited to the East-West Shrine Bowl and the combine where he killed it in the testing portion.

Positional Skills:

Strengths

Grable has great size and a long athletic frame for the position, his quarterback/tight end back round shows on the field in his ability to move and his coordination. Grable has quick feet and is able to recover easily. He keeps his arms high and tight in pass sets. He has shown on film independent hand usage which is pretty advanced for his experience. Grable has large hands and shows good grip strength on film, defenders have a hard time disengaging once he’s locked on. The former Gamecock moves well at the second level and has been used as a puller. He keeps his feet moving when engaged. Grable has also shown the upper body strength to torque defenders and put them on the ground. Despite his age he still has the frame to where he could still pack on a few pounds and play in the 310-312 range. The former quarterback also plays until the whistle. Grable has shown a snatch trap on film. He keeps his head on a swivel and is good at recognizing stunts.

Weaknesses

He is still a bit raw, having played offensive line full time for just three years. Grable’s length for an offensive tackle is just ok. The former quarterbacks lower body is a little thin and could use some bulk. His hands can get outside at times, or he can strike too high. On film he can get a little high out of his stance. Grable is not a mauler and not a player who will look to bury the defender across from him. Grable is over-aged so there is a question of how much upside he has left? He tends to be more of a get in the way type of run blocker. He does not anchor well from a technical standpoint. Defenders can get under his pads due to his high stance. The former tight end has also shown to overset and defenders have been able to cut back inside. All of his in game experience is at left tackle.

Fit with the Packers:

Grable would be a great fit with the Packers as a developmental pick. He is a little on the older side, turning 25 in October, but he is not far off and even may surprise and come in and compete as a rookie. He is the athletic freak that the Packers prefer at tackle and, the Packers love guys who have played other sports and other positions. He also showed big improvement in pass pro, going from 5 sacks and 25 pressures given up in 2022 to 0 sacks and just 10 pressures in 2023. If need be he could be cross trained to play guard and could potentially compete at right guard as well, but he has the potential to be a starting tackle in the NFL and could even be one of the better ones if he can work out his technical flaws.

Every point made seemed to have the exact same thing for a counterpoint, so I'm a little perplexed.

Basketball player, TE and QB so he has the moves and can get to the second level, but is more of a stand in the way blocker?

Brian, are you now into the UDFA ranks? His age seems to even move him out of the 7th, doesn't it? Camp body?

NFL.com projects him to be drafted in the 6th round. The article does not mention his height and weight. He's 6'6" and weighs 306 pounds.

If you want to draft a developmental player, wouldn't you be better off with a guy who isn't already older than most rookies?

He’s 25 in October. Why worry so much about age? If he’s good enough to get a second contract at 28 he will have been a huge steal.

I get age considerations with high picks, but later in you are just hoping to hit on a contributor, not worrying about whether they will be playing in 2030. The odds are high that most of our picks won’t be Packers by then.

6 years ago we drafted only one player still with us, Jaire. About half of the others remain in the league (I count MVS). JK Scott, EQ, Oren Burks. None of them were old when drafted, but none of that matters to us.

Let’s not put up obstacles that really don’t make any real sense.

Coldworld, my thoughts exactly, though I never took the trouble to articulate it. Thank you!

I'm sure there's an algorithm somewhere that has correlations between age/ROI and injury that informs the draft age curve. Ideally you'd love a pick to have a 12 year career, right?

I recall that the last GB O-line player from UCF was Josh Sitton - who was an All-Pro Guard. Now Grable is a different type and style of player. However his athleticism and penchant in pass pro suggests that he is a draft worthy player. Due to his age and need for improvement in certain areas - it probably drops him into the later rounds or possibly a priority UDFA. I have circled Grable as one of my Draft Gems.

UFDA because of his age. I wish him well though.

I think Grable, Frank Crum and Nick Gargiulo are all in the same boat as outstanding athletes that could be a Nijman like project in the 7th round. I like Garguilo the most because he has some versatility, playing LT at Yale before playing center and LG for South Carolina last year. He also did all the testing and his 3-cone and SS were both in the Packers range. He's also the heaviest of the three. Crum also completed all the testing but is too tall to play inside and he might go in the 6th round. I know Garguilo was a 5th year guy last year so he is older as well, not sure about Crum. Any one of these guys would probably bump Jones or Telfort off the roster.

Crum is a 6 year super senior who redshirted back in 2018. Garguilo will be 24 in July.

LL, Gargiulo looks very intriguing as a late round developmental guy with a wide skillset. He could play anywhere.
