General Info:

Spears was a three-star recruit coming out of Ponchatoula, Louisiana; scoring 18 touchdowns in his senior season with 1,800 total yards. He also has eight siblings. The former Green Wave played a very small role his first two season at Tulane, both seasons he played less than 60 snaps each season, eventually earning a redshirt for the 2019 season. He did show flashes as a Sophomore rushing for 7.4 yards a carry for 274 yards in just three games before an injury ended his season. Spears came back healthy in 2021 and played a lot more, but wasn’t “the guy” splitting carries with Cameron Carroll, but still leading the team in rushing with 863 yards and 9 rushing TDs. He also returned two kicks that season for a total of 37 yards. Having a career game against Memphis that season he rushed for 264 yards and two touchdowns. He took the reins in 2022 and had a season to remember with 1,586 yards rushing, 19 touchdowns and two more receiving. Spears was invited to and participated in the Senior Bowl at the end of the season and also was invited to the combine.

Positional Skills:

Strengths:

Spears has a compact build, muscular and well proportioned; perfect for the NFL. On film he shows very quick feet, with the ability to change direction on a dime, or juke any defender leaving them grasping at air; this really showed in his explosive testing. Spears shows nice jump cuts behind the line of scrimmage to find the open hole if his initial one is closed. He the former Green Wave will even us a dead leg on occasion. Due to his low center of gravity and how low he runs Spears shows very good contact balance for a guy who is just barely 200 pounds. On film the former Green Wave shows soft hands out of the backfield as a receiver and has shown improvement as a receiver from year to year. He really has a nose for the end zone, evidenced by the 19 rushing touchdowns he had in 2022, he just knows how to slither his way into the end zone. The Louisiana native shows an ability to tempo his speed on the field, then turn on the jets to pull away from defenders. Despite his size the former three-star recruit generally falls forward when being tackled. Spears will use a stiff arm occasionally and it is somewhat effective. He has been known to lower his head from time to time. The Louisiana native’s feet never stop moving. Finally, he has amazing vision it is like he has a sixth sense, where he hits the hole just as its opening up.

Weaknesses:

The first and easiest one that stands out is his size, even for NFL standards he is a bit undersized at barely 200 pounds and it shows at times in very short yardage situations and in pass blocking, he lacks the power right now to be effective in those situations; though he has shown and willingness to be a good pass blocker. While not slow my any means Spears is not a threat to take a carry 50 yards on any consistent basis, evidence by his 4.47 40 that he ran at his pro day. Spears has just 48 catches in his career with half of those just in 2022 alone and was not asked to run a varied route tree outside of basic dumb offs and Swing/wheel/seem routes. The redshirt Junior measured in with 30 3/4ths” arms and it shows in the passing game his smaller catch radius. Spears does try to bounce a few too many carries to the outside. The former Green Wave also will carry the ball too loosely at times, although it hasn’t hurt him too much yet with just three career fumbles.

Fit with the Packers:

Tyjae Spears would be a great fit with the Packers. He has some similarities to Aaron Jones when he came out of UTEP, I made the comparison to Jones back early on in the 2022 season. They have very similar skill sets with Jones being more pro ready in that he had more production, and was a better pass blocker, but Spears might have a slightly higher upside. Green Bay would be a great place for him to learn from Jones as a rookie while he works on his routes, blocking, and adding a little more bulk to his frame. He could then take over in 2024 to be Jordan Love’s main back and an offensive weapon. Spears should get taken in the 2nd round.

Thanks Brian!

Good little player but small and not someone who is going to be able to carry the rock too many times a game. The average size NFL RB is 215 lbs. With the Packer needs a round 2 or even 3 would be unlikely I would think based on other pressing needs they have.

He is a dynamic runner in the mold of A.Jones, so he fits the wingback role. He got in the endzone on big plays. A football player.

Spears is my favorite RB right now knowing we have no shot at Bijan Robinson. That would send some shock waves through the draft if Bijan fell to us. That isn't happening. My first RB draft crush was Devan Achane because he reminded me of Aaron Jones only smaller. Then because it worked better in my mock drafts so I could fill positions with players I liked, I chose Eric Gray-Oklahoma. A little bigger and I could wait until 4th round to take him, unlike who I had to take in the 2nd.

All 4 of these guys run fast and catch the ball really well. Any of the 4 would let us move on from AJ and his big salary. Although Aaron was a heck of find in the 6th round. What a good football player but an even better human being. Jones and Rodgers are so different, if not for football I wouldn't see them being friends.

If we could get Spears in 3rd say if we had scored some extra picks from trading back from #15, he looks like a good replacement for Jones next year. He would be an upgrade on the RB from Iowa on the practice squad.
My late round "sleeper" is Evan Hull from Northwestern. He is talented, tough, and same as the other 4 good running and catching the ball. He put up good numbers for some really bad Northwesters teams. And he is more solidly built than Spears or Achane plus playing in the Big Ten he can play in the cold.

I think there’s a good chance that Bijan WILL still be available at #15.

I do as well, RB are devalued in the NFL today. You can get very good ones later in the draft. Better going with a top flight lineman. Great Linemen will make an average back look very good.

There are three OTs and maybe O'Cyrus Torrence who fill the blue chip spot. The rest are RT/guards. If Robinson was at the #15, it would be tempting if they could move Dillon during the draft.

Or take Bijan at 15 because he’s pretty universally regarded as one of the top 5 overall talents and could eventually take over for the aging and very expensive Aaron Jones.

Maybe! See so many scenarios where he is gone to Detroit either with their first round pick, or second. Would love to have Bijan if used creatively but with all the other Packer needs in round 1 can one actually justify drafting Bijan? The talent at #15 is certainly there no doubt.

Between Darnell Washington and his huge body and arm length, and Bijan's ability to run & make people miss......the GBP's couldn't go wrong in the red zone right????

Brian,
Suggesting when players are being profiled it would be nice to have a hyper link to that players YouTube highlights. Probably get more responses!

I’d take another Sproles type RB in LaFluers offense.

Its funny but after saying no way Robinson falls to us in my next mock draft I played he did fall and I couldn't resist taking him even though it broke my cardinal rule of trading back in 1st for extra picks. I think it is crucial for this 2023 Packers draft o go from good to great hinges on gaining extra picks in rounds 2,3,4. We are not even in the ballpark of a championship team so the more swings of the bat the better chance of filling holes in the roster.

Drafting Robinson would be earth shattering news in the draft and I am not against it because we could immediately trade Aaron jones, while he is worth the most to us. I think at best we could get a later 2nd round
pick or at worst a 3rd and 6th? Aaron would be alot of teams best RB right away. So pick wise it would be almost like trading back and still getting the best RB candidate in the last 5 years. Robinson would be a gamechanger and they are damn hard to find. Realistically If we got Evan Hull in 7th we could trade Dillon too. Cap saving x 2 and we have almost no options short of trading players left to us. Example-Savage. Trade him = $7.9 million savings. Then sign Taylor Rapp for $5 million per year.

We probably won't even get the chance to draft Robinson anyway, but hypothetically it could benefit us both ways because even if we didn't pick him our phones would be ringing off the hooks with great offers to trade up for Robinson. He would have the same effect as a QB falling and a desperate team giving us a mini farm of picks to move up.

I would probably be very happy with Eric Gray in the 5th or Evan Hull in 7th. A later round pick of RB would be better so we could draft more pressing needs and either player could let us move on from Aaron next year and if he was healthy he might still get us a 3rd.

But Bijan Robinson would really open some great possibilities.

I think there is too much focus on position players rather then play makers. In the case of running back (or WR) Jaymyr Gibbs could play all of the above. He is a difference maker the Packers could use. I think slot receiver would be best. With him you get both a slot receiver and a RB not to mention kick returner. The film speaks for itself. He will be gone before the first round to a team that values explosive play makers. A great receiver now and shifty 4.3 speed. I would take him with our first pick as he will be gone before round two. He will change the entire offense. He will be Love's best friend.

Gibbs is really fast but he is also really short. Don't you think we would be better drafting someone bigger who is also fast that knows how to run actual WR routes as opposed to only RB routes? Its also way to early to pick a RB unless its Bijan Robinson. We need TE, S, and Edge early. Better to trade back for more picks to address those needs early and pick a WR that runs WR routes with late 3rd or 4th round pick. Trade back, get more picks, fill more holes, become a better team sooner. We can score a good RB later too.

I am always well disposed when I read great vision and 4.47 speed. GB has a lot of needs, with RB only being kind of a sneaky one perhaps in 2024. Given the needs, I will just say that if he falls far enough I probably will be fine with taking Spears. 78 is awkward - I'd like him if we were drafting in the nineties per usual.

So I suppose I think he'd have to fall all the way to the 4th, which is another way of saying I don't want him enough.

There are a bunch guys that are about the same height, weight, speed and run and catch well that will be available in 5,6,7 rounds. Spears, Eric Gray, Israel Abanakanda, Sean Tucker, Chase Brown, Kenny Mcintosh, Roschon Johnson, Dwayne Mcbride, and Evan Hull. Green Bay should be able to find a good running back in the later rounds. Some fabulous stats this year and alot of touchdown scored. I seen some great video of RBs catching passes and making it look easy, Being a Big Ten fan I have seen some of Evan Hulls games for Northwestern and he might be a steal in later rounds. No fat on this guy @ 210lbs, 5'11 and 4.4 fast. If he was still available in the 7th round?
