Two Players Arrested For Drug Possession – Jolly And Russell – Work Out Together

The suspended Packers defensive lineman has been working out with JaMarcus Russell in Houston, according to his Facebook status.

According to a post on Johnny Jolly's Facebook profile, he's been working out with an individual presumed to be JaMarcus Russell, the former no. 1 overall draft choice in the NFL Draft in 2007.

Both players were arrested for possession of the drug codeine in separate incidents, Jolly in July of 2008 and Russell in July of 2010.

In both cases, the players were allegedly in possession of a concoction popularly known as "Purple Drank" or "Sizzurp" that mixes the codeine in cough syrup with soda such as Sprite or Mountain Dew along with Jolly Rancher candies.

Jolly is currently under indefinite suspension by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy, although he's eligible to apply for reinstatement.

The Packers defensive lineman is also taking part in a pretrial diversion program in his native Houston, after which his felony drug possession charge could be dismissed.

According to an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jolly was told by state district Judge Mike Anderson, "This is just between us. I'm going to be keeping my eye on you."

Greg Bedard of the Journal Sentinel wrote back in August, "State district Judge Mike Anderson also told Jolly he will not be able to consume drugs or alcohol and must stay away from establishments that serve alcohol. He must report monthly to Harris County probation officials and submit to random drug and alcohol testing."

Whether associating with another individual arrested for drug possession will affect Jolly's legal status or his application for reinstatement with the NFL remains to be seen.

Although Russell was arrested for possession of codeine, a friend of his took responsibility for mixing the drink, and no one in the case has been indicted, according to an article from the Fox television Houston affiliate in October of 2010.

Russell has reportedly been working out in Houston with former NBA head coach John Lucas in hopes he'll get a second chance in the NFL.

I bet at first glance you wouldn't be able to tell which one plays DL and which one plays QB.

It may actually be a good sign. Lucas is known for bringing around guys with bad pasts.

Maybe Russell should switch to defensive line.

Jolly I give a chance for a comeback. Russell, not so much. He's made too much money without earning it and I don't think he has the fire to be a great NFL player, nor the leadership skills to be an NFL QB.

I think (hope?) Jolly does have the fire in him, and we'll just have to wait and see if he gets the chance to prove it (again) with the Packers. He was dominant at times in '09, is very athletic (remember his pick of Cutler?), and hopefully comes back feeling he has something to prove and to get a ring.

It's actually a pretty good arrangement ........... As one performs grass drills, the other is standing guard & keeping an eye out for the Feds ......

What's funny is those ads are targeted toward each user individually. Your own browsing habits help dictate which ads you see.

Cheers.

At first blush, I see one purple-drank problem hanging with another purple-drank problem, who (coincidentally??) was an NFL bust -- with questionable work habits.

Although I'm not familiar with Lucas and his endeavors after his substance abuse problems, I keep asking myself the same question, over and over:
"Is this the best option available to Jolly ?"

My friend made his own version of "Purple Sizzurp Drank" in college while driving from Madion to UW-Eau Claire for homecoming. He was 18 at the time and not making millions in the NFL. The night ended with him flipping out in jail. Imagine that.

I really believe that Johnny "I mix my Jolly rachers with Codiene" is a great player, but of all people why would you decide to spend your off-season working out with "JeMarcus Drank"? Seriously, who thinks up this shit?
