Throwback Helmets Need a Tweak

Simple shading would help fans understand the history behind the idea behind the 1929 throwback helmets, which were leather.

With news that the Green Bay Packers will be wearing their 1929 throwback uniforms for a second straight year in a game Oct. 16 against the St. Louis Rams, reaction––once again––has been filtering in.

I've seen several comments that the uniforms are ugly, which I suppose they are, but their looks don't really matter or register to me.

They're intended to be replicas the Packers wear once a year. Their purpose is not to "look good" or be flashy.

That being said, I do have one small suggestion, which was influenced by Chance Michaels of the blog The Wearing of the Green (and Gold) a year ago when the uniforms were first introduced.

Seeing as they wore leather helmets in 1929, the current throwback uniforms include bland, drab brown helmets as a reasonable facsimile.

With permission from Michaels, the photoshopped helmet above include a shading that would help fans understand the uniform's place in history and the purpose behind the bland helmet.

I don't get all the hate for the throwbacks. I love everything about them and think the team looks badass in them on the field. Though, I wish NFL allowed them to use the smaller original gold circle for numbers. But, respectfully, I don't like this helmet shading suggestion. It's sort of circus-tent looking. The dull, solid leather brown fits the simple, all-function no-fashion, of the original leather helmets.

I'm with you, dude. I love the throwbacks just the way they are. The shading is a great idea, Brian, but at the same time it works for a helmet shaped liked that. With the current helmet, the straight brown looks fine. It's putting the retro in with the current unis. I mean, if we're getting right down the authenticity, the sleeves should go down to the forearms or wrist, right? So my hats off to the throwbacks, they're by far my favorite.

It's interesting...I used to initiate discussion about alternate jerseys and the reaction was almost always overwhelming against the idea. Now we have the blue and yellow Superman jerseys and it does get a reasonable amount of support as "throwback"...not a "third jersey" like you might see from the Cowboys or the Falcons.

Personally, I think the traditional gold helmet with perhaps a retro G symbol (or perhaps the old Lombardi era logo http://www.sportslogos.net/logo.php?id=cwffwzpd0ph8sf0wkaqy ) would match the yellow on the jersey well enough.

Being a Packer fan stuck in Bear country I've seen the Pack at Soldier Field in their whites and I finally make the trip last year to Lambeau for the first time and I don't get to see them in their Green against the 49'ers cause they were were their atrocious 1929 uni's. So guess what? I'm returning this year to take my boy for his fav team the Rams. Get to see the Pack in their Greens right? NOT! Ugh. Maybe one day.

Great minds think alike. Think dark lines (michigan outline like) might look cooler- but if that shading is more representational of the actual helmet then I bow and give full credit to Chance. EIther way- this is probably too expensive of an addition-
