The Lass Word: What To Do at LT if Bakh Can't Go?
Several options but are any of them any good?

Forget the loss to the Bucs. It's history. There is another game to get ready for. And another potentially big issue to be concerned with.
Left tackle David Bakhtiari suffered a chest injury on the Packers first offensive play of the third quarter. He left the game and did not return. On Monday Coach Matt LaFleur said he didn't think the injury was going to be serious. I breathed a sigh of relief. But when the coach stepped to the podium on Wednesday I was hoping for an equally optimistic report. LaFleur would say only "There is nothing new to report. He will not practice today."
Uh-oh. Didn't like the sound of that. I'm still hopeful the All Pro veteran can take the field against the Texans Sunday, but if he can't what are the alternatives?
Rick Wagner
Wagner is a right tackle by trade and played adequately there for the Packers earlier this season. But when Bakh went down against Tampa Bay, Wagner was the choice to replace him on the left side. It didn't go well. In 23 snaps he gave up a half sack, a pressure and was responsible for a bad run. His positive is that he has played a lot of tackle and knows the position. His downside is that the footwork he has been accustomed to for years on the right side would be reversed on the left and that could make for more missed assignments. At 30 years old he is past his prime and probably not reliable at the most important position on the front line.
Billy Turner
He was just okay at right guard last season, moved out to right tackle this year and has held his own. He is versatile and playing left tackle would not be a completely new world. But he has trouble with speed rushers and quick sets and it's a little scary to trust Aaron Rodgers' blind side with him.
Elgton Jenkins
Immediately settled in to the left guard slot as a rookie last year and played very well. When Wagner got hurt in the preseason, Jenkins was the surprise replacement at right tackle and wasn't embarrassed. He moves well and learns fast, and proved he is not overwhelmed on the outside. Left tackle would be a huge leap, but the Packers may want to look at him there in case they can't sign Bakhtiari to a new deal.
Yosh Nijman
At 6 foot 7 and 313 lbs Nijman has imposing size. He has flashed good sets and athletic footwork in practice. The major concern is Nijman is green as grass. The second year man from Virginia Tech played five snaps late against the Lions this year and that's about it. To insert him against Houston would be baptism under fire no doubt. Here again is an example of a guy the Packers desperately wanted to see play in preseason games to gauge what they have. Finding out the hard way as a replacement starter may be too risky.
Jon Runyan
In terms of NFL exposure, Runyan is even greener than Nijman. He has also been working out inside thus far for the team and has been projected as a guard/center in the pros. But Runyan started 24 games at left tackle in college at Michigan and was first team all Big Ten as a junior and senior. Again, it would have been great to see him play all across the line in the preseason, but that didn't happen. Starting against the Texans is a tough place to find out if he can play.
As you see, there are several options. The question is, are any of them any good? Which way would you go? I would start Jenkins, then insert Runyan at left guard. Keep in mind that whomever starts will likely be looking across the line of scrimmage at the likes of J.J. Watt.
Of course, all of this is moot if Bakhtiari shows up on the practice field late this week. That would be the best of all outcomes. Keep your fingers crossed.
OUTTAKES
• Did anybody notice that Fox announcer Joe Buck was in Arlington, Texas Saturday for Game 6 of the NLCS, then was in Tampa, Florida Sunday for the Packers-Bucs game, then was in Buffalo, New York Monday for Bills-Chiefs, then back in Arlington Tuesday for game one of the World Series? That dude must spend a lot of time sleeping on airplanes.
• One of my favorite all time Packers will be on the other sideline Sunday. Randall Cobb is still catching passes in the NFL. Caught a TD for the Texans last week against Tennessee. Green Bay made the right call to part ways a few years back, but dang, he made some great plays for us. His backbreaking TD catch against the Bears is one of my all time favorite moments.
• With Tyler Ervin out last week, it would have been nice to see what Darrius Shepherd could bring to the table on kick-off returns. You may recall he was impressive in the 2019 preseason. Unfortunately, he never got the chance. Tampa Bay's Bradley Pinion blasted all seven kick-offs into, or out of, the end zone. Maybe he'll get a shot at Houston.
• I don't know about you, but I'm taking the Bears much more seriously now.....even though they obviously still suck.

you need to let your archaic PC actually do it's work, so you don't redundantly Post Over and Over, and Over again? We got your point the first time! We don't need to "see you" multiple times to get your point dude! What, ... is Ken Lass your son, or a relative or something? Embarrassing dude, get with the technology curve, or keep looking like you did on this one? Dude...

Unnecessarily rude comment VOR. Perhaps you should cure your own inability to properly construct a sentence and use capitalization before you criticize other comments.

-Thanks Ken, as usual an interesting read. I'm inclined to agree with the 'Jenkins to LT and Runyan to LG' choice, although the obvious best option is to have B(L)T healthy enough to start at tackle.
-I typically watch games with the sound muted, so I didn't notice the Joe Buck tour.
-Randall Cobb, one of the all-time "Good Guy" Packers! Lots of Cobb Moments over the years. He had a couple electrifying returns as a rookie - 79 yards for a TD against minnesota, and the 108 yard "barrel roll" kick return against NO to open the season and introduce himself to the NFL!
-I found myself wishing that Pinion's first name started with an "O," so he could be called O. Pinion...Sorry, I had to write that.

Given that JJ Watt will be one of the pass rushers for the Texans, I would opt for experience. Wagner has played well for the Packers at RT and that is where I would put him (he played RT for the Lions and Ravens and RT in college for the Badgers). I would move Turner over to LT and see how he does. If he fails, move Jenkins over to LT and insert Runyon at LG. Get your most experienced guys on the field for another reasonably good front seven.

Big week in determining the value of fBakhtiari. If the Packers can adequately cover for him on the field they'll question if they need to pay him-$15-$20 per year going forward. If not, it'll force their hand on re-signing him and give them some hard decisions on contracts for other players.

totally disagree, this player needs to be resigned. It goes like this - QB, LT, OL and all the other gadget ****! If you don't have a LT, you get your QB murdered!!! Trust me NOBODY on this roster is serviceable at LT, NOBODY!

Nothing lasts for ever and cap is a significant barrier next year. I doubt anyone wants to lose Bakh, but he could be in line for a massive payday we can’t match with Rodgers’ salary.

Totally disagree. We need to replace Bakhtiari with a more economical option.

The importance of LT depends on your offensive scheme. Under MM your hierarchy would be correct; under LaFleur not so much. With greater emphasis on running the ball and a short passing game, it is no longer a necessity to have a great pass blocking LT.
We will find our Sunday if we have a serviceable backup LT or not. I think Lare's point about discovering the value of Bahk for the Packers is spot on.

I believe we move on from Bahk, Lowry, Kirksey, and Preston Smith. That gives us 40 million in savings. Maybe enough room for Jones and King.

We save nothing on Bakhtiari. We make three more holes in the starting lineup by releasing the others.

Next year savings on Bahk will be 20$million plus. Lass has already argued that Jenkins can move to LT. We drafted 3 O-linemen this year so look for Runyan to play LG. Lowry has not lived up to his contract and can be replaced by almost anyone. Martin and Barnes are 2 rookies that can fill in for Kirksey. Lastly both Smith brothers were signed to 4 year deals that had "escapes" after 2 years. This means not much owed nor dead money if they are cut. Z will stay but Preston needs to improve or it's too easy to cut him. Besides Rashan Gary will fill his spot.

Nah. It's like saying I saved $279K by not buying the Ferrari F8 Turbo. GB could similarly save a lot of money by not signing Clowney or Ngakoue or some other UFA.
Kirksey, Preston, Lowry and probably Amos are all potential cap casualties. Perhaps one of Wagner/Turner as well.

Anything getting Runyan game experience, I'm for that.
Lets be clear about something, you don't replace David Bakhtiari with anyone on this roster, and won't next year either. You could draft the best LT coming out of college, and you don't replace David Bakhtiari.
They need to sign this football player, and he needs to be on the field.. Preferably this week if possible. If he feels 90% on Sunday, he needs to be out there. It's not like he "needs" to practice..

I suspect they go with Wagner to start. That has the advantage of not putting inexperience inside the tackle.
In all fairness, any back up tackle has a difficult job. They don’t get reps and they come in cold. Wagner not only had that but came in to a full blown onslaught.
I’d love to see Nyman start, I just don’t think they will risk it at this point. I do not see any advantage in moving right tackle to left unless they think the difference between Wagner and Turner at left is minimal but that Wagner would be an upgrade at RT. Actually one could argue that he might be based on play this season but the team presumably doesn’t think so given that Turner started over him.
Runyon isn’t experienced at guard, let alone a Tackle in the NFL. I would put Nyman there before him.

Gee, Runyan played LT in College? He was a nasty SOB out there at Right Guard? Lets be clear about sometime, there isn't a LT on this roster other than Bakhtiari. All these other guy's? Wagner got schooled, Nyman? You must want Rodgers injured really bad?
The smartest thing you said was Wagner is better than Turner at RT? That I agree with! Turner has played like a few games at LT, and if he plays LT like he did RT last week? Again, Rodgers is going to get decapitated!!!
Here's a news flash dude, GB has slept through getting ANY significant LT help, period! If Bahktiari doesn't play Sunday?
It's not going to matter who the poor fool is they put on the edge, he's going to get *-ing SLAUGHTERED!!!
GB needs to pluck their collective heads and get Bakhtiari's contract DONE already, and he needs to get back on the field!

Wagner and others played LT in college. Most NFL tackles did and a lot of guards. It seems you are deeply enthralled with Runyon. Don’t see it at LT, maybe at guard, though he is apparently behind Lucas Patrick at this point. Hardly a recommendation as a savior at LT.
If Linsley can’t go as seems possible, Runyan will in any case be starting at guard, with Patrick likely moving to center.

VOR...what is your definition of “slaughtered”? Out of 70 snaps.....35 run and 35 pass...do you see our backup LT breaking even on any snaps at all?
Can we help him with a TE? Can we devise a game plan to help at all?

Wow VOR, is possible for you to be any nastier, especially to a long time reasonable commenter such as Coldworld? How about getting off your high horse and discuss things in a civilized manner.
Of course, it seems as though you lack any manners, in addition to any intelligence. Unfortunately your idiot parents didn't do you any favors with that homeschooling.

It’ll be Wagner.. We aren’t going to to put a rookie there. Moving Jenkins means we’ll have backups at two spots instead of one.

There were several people here who talked about the fact that the Packers didn't enter the season with a clear backup at LT, or that the Packers had an unclear succession at LT. Any time you have an elite or near-elite starter, you worry about the step down if that player misses time. It's meaningful that Nijman was active on Sunday in a blowout and didn't get snaps at LT when Bakhtiari got hurt...even at the end with Boyle playing out the string.

I wouldn’t expect a team to throw a rookie into that hot mess at LT when having a choice. There might be a greater chance this week, it when one has Wagner using him seems a better option. The question is where.

Lane Taylor had played LT when Bahktiari missed time in the past and filled in admirably. If he wasn't out for the season I think the Packers had him as their backup LT. It was tough to see him get injured early on in the season after he worked so hard to get a starter spot back.

Start Nijman. The first 15 plays or so are usually scripted, so he'd have the week to practice those. Also, the scripted plays could be optimized to minimize any "exposure" of him being the new guy. Evaluate how it goes and switch to Wagner or whoever if necessary.
This allows the best possible way to evaluate Nijman so that they know how desperately they need to resign Bakhtiari.
If Nijman plays well, keep him in the game on the "unscripted" plays. Maybe he ends up playing the entire game. Maybe its the first half. Maybe just the 1st series or two. It will provide tons of real info.
Coldworld
October 23, 2020 at 07:54 am
I imagine they evaluate Nijman in practice. The point with him is round 1 physical attributes but no technique. Rumors suggest he is coachable and that he is effective in the run game but learning pass protection. How far he has got we can’t know because if the off season and no meaningful snaps.
I would never have thrown him in in the situation last week while we had an available vet who played well at right tackle. It’s possible that with a week of practice they might, depending how far along he is. With Linsley possibly down, one would think Patrick could be moved to center, presumably Runyon to guard. That’s a lot of change without adding an inexperienced player at LT.

I'm onboard fish - let's find out what we have in Nijman. Article says he has learned the footwork and we know he has the size, athleticism, quickness and strength. Only question is whether he can play or not. Let's find out.
Of course, I'd have a plan B worked out in advance just in case he finds himself in over his head.

Don't move any starters if Bakh can't play. It seems like the Pack should run the ball all day so keeping everybody in their familiar lanes to maximize run yardage sounds like the right way to go. GPG!
